hitman Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 No local home depot. : ( I'll just have to ask around. I know some guys who know some guys! :smilewink: If not I'll just come up with a jig in the garage. A home depot is a lowes is a home improvement center is a hardware store is a plumbers paradise. They just vary in sizes, and almost all of them either cut pipe or bend it too. Almost every hardware store Ive went to had a way to bend copper tubing for plumbing/HVAC or galvanized/stainless steel tubing. If you cant find one, I bet you can call a plumber and ask them where they get pipes bent to order. Id do it myself, but Im lazy :joystick:
Stevos758 Posted February 13, 2014 Author Posted February 13, 2014 Yes I wish I had a home depot.... I did just brainstorm up and adjustable spring tension device! So I must begin work ASAP! Facebook Ripp's Garage Tech LLC
Kybosh Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Im going to have to point out another issue, I just noticed you have the gimbal on the deck. The chair will interfere with stick travel, and you might want to test it before you go any further. Id even go as far as applying sensitivity to the stick in-game, but I overcame that by removing the gimbal off the mount and placing mine on top of the pipe, connected to flanges. jay43 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 This all very good but we have to find a way of restricting the amount of throw you have to use on the stick. From my experience extending the stick from floor up does give you ever so smooth control but the throw of the stick is exponentially increased to the point you end up having to lean forward out of your seat which is not really ideal and with the bend in it you will keep smacking yourself in the nads i know i have done it. So today i had an epiphany at work whilst doodling away listening to some boring site manager lecturing me it came to me so let me know what you all think of this and if it will work. We already know extending the base from floor up is a pain. So imagine this flip the base upright as though the stick was horizontal with the floor. Now decide how much throw you want from the base i am thinking about 4 to 6 inches should be enough and that will dictate how much physical movement you have to do. Now add a 90 degree bend off of the 4 to 6 inches then add your desired height as close as possible to the real thing that you can get. Then a 90 degree bend back towards you then a 90 up to the stick and this should eliminate the smacking of the knees and nads. Eagles may soar high but weasel's don't get sucked into jet engines. jay43 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I am working on an adjustable piece that will limit movement. Ill post when I come up with something. Understood but then you can't use the full in game axis cause you're now restricting it at the base. Eagles may soar high but weasel's don't get sucked into jet engines. System Spec. You were confusing me for a second. I think the only way around that would be a Mechanical geared solution or higher res hall effects. Both would be a lot of work. How would your stick move left and right? Facebook Ripp's Garage Tech LLC

Stevos758 Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 First extension goes out for evaluation today. I am also nearing a limit solution and tracking down a spring for my adjustable force design. Below is a prototype/top plate for the adjustable gimbals restriction and spring mount. jay43 Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Now thats given me an idea seeing that. So looking at it with that stubie white piece means i could screw the base to the floor just below my seat, then using a drop link ball joint from a car as the main pivot point for the actual stick bringing it upto my desired height including bends positioned around 250mm infront of the main base. Then raise the white stubie with some ali tubing to say 250mm may be more, then using a bicycle seat clamp around the ali tube and another around my stick from the ball joint and then link them together by using a steel rod. Voila full throw control without having to reach to far forward and without smacking me knees or nads. Eagles may soar high but weasel's don't get sucked into jet engines. System Spec. Kybosh Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Just received the extension with the nylon pieces. Solid construction. Nice job. lxsapper Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 A little input. This number may actually be off, but I belive the the stick in the A-10 (other planes are probably not far from that) has a 15º offset in any directions. But this is with a much shorter control column since the seat in an aircraft is much closer to the pit floor. There are simpler ways to limit travel range but not as elegant as the piece you are developing. However I must point out that you have to redesign your piece, because you made it round all the way around. If you look at the warthog's original piece that limits the travel you'll notice that it's actually sort of a square with round corners (to match the diameter of the pole base that hit's it), this is necessary or else at max aileron you can't command max pitch and vice versa.

I did think of this when I was creating it. I have yet to test this one but that is a valid concern. I think i can easily change the piece to work in the same manner as the stock piece. This was more of a prototype. Thanks for all the help guys! Facebook Ripp's Garage Tech LLC
Kybosh Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Stevos the extension and nylon pieces are strong as bricks..bravo on your work. Stevos758 Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 Observer prototype A. I am not sure how I feel about the setup. I need to tweak a few things. Tension is adjustable by height. It will def center with the full extension. The stick it a little off center due to the way the spring is manufactured. Facebook Ripp's Garage Tech LLC
hitman Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 One big idea thats been floating around is to use retaining springs on all 4 corners of the base attached to the stick, which would center it completely. Im at a loss looking at how to resolve this one...but its an idea. Maybe shim the upper base?
