Honestly I wouldnt go with the base on the floor unless the shaft could clear the chair I sit in, else the throw in the stick is just too great for me.

I highly recommend using this guy for any of your sim design needs. Or do I have to convert it to something else? Asking because I've got an idea for a part that I'm going to need for my L/G assembly in some time (still chewing the fat on the design though).
