Abburo Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 How did the West find out about STOL performance of the Soviet aircraft? This comes from a top secret recording describing what happened at a soviet cockpit during approach to JFK at IFR conditions: Captain: “500 ft. low visibility, runway seems to be short. Co-pilot, lower flaps to 30 degrees…” Co-Pilot: “Flaps down at 30.. check.” Captain: “300 ft, low visibility, runway looks very short… Co-pilot, lower to 45 degrees !!!” Co-Pilot: “Flaps down at 45…check.” Captain: “100 ft !!! Runway very short !!! “Co-pilot, lower flaps to emergency – 90 degrees down!!! Co-Pilot: “Flaps down to 90 degrees ready to land…check.” Aircraft lands and breaks immediately… Captain: “*wipes off the sweets and sighs*… “Ohh they make the runways so short in the west….” Co-pilot: “Yes…*points out the window*…but they are so wide…” Romanian Community for DCS World HW Specs: AMD 7900X, 64GB RAM, RTX 4090, HOTAS Virpil, MFG, CLS-E, custom
Bushmanni Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Our War series by BBC. One of the grittiest I have seen. Material consists of footage shot by soldiers themselves and interviews of those soldiers. JayPee Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) I think this one is a "must see": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4SgEy2khOE cheers More of an interview setting compared to the ones I mentioned but worth it nevertheless! By Youtubing it I also stumbled across Royal Marines: Mission Afghanistan. Edited January 22, 2014 by JayPee i7 4790K: 4.8GHz, 1.328V (manual) MSI GTX 970: 1,504MHz core, 1.250V, 8GHz memory
TimeKilla Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Loving this thread will post some when I get home tonight. :joystick: YouTube :pilotfly: TimeKilla on Flight Sims over at YouTube.
Invader ZIM Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Not exactly and interview, but the ISAF soldier steps on a landmine, and the ensuing 30 minutes of the medics and medivac coming in to save him. I've heard this video is now used for training because the medic did the right thing. It's very graphic, when you see what a landmine does to a human being, and it's a war zone, so there's a lot of cussing as well, you were warned. http://www.michaelyon-online.com/watch-your-step.htm Scroll down on the link above to see the video.
geert Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 More of an interview setting compared to the ones I mentioned but worth it nevertheless! By Youtubing it I also stumbled across Royal Marines: Mission Afghanistan. Yep, the only few times there´s some technical stuff (smartbomb stuff and interviews with some pilots for example) it is obviously meant to be very painfull to watch (at least to me it is), I guess that´s one of the obvious purposes of this doc. I guess you weren´t really looking for a doc like this, but it does fit the title of the topic perfectly :).
Laurius Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Hi Jaypee, Unfortunately Restrepo, Armadillo and Ross Kemp documentaries are no longer available on Youtube. I saw all of them one year ago or so but they were removed because of copyright problems with channels that own them... That's a problem with such kind of videos which I find very educational because they show how really things are, at least at the moment they are filmed. Especially for Ross Kemp series and some other, such as "Heroes of Hell Highway" about demining and "Inside Combat Rescue" series which illustrates the job of PJ's (Paramedic Jumpers) to cite few of them. Otherwise, I don't know if you're looking for more specificaly Afghanistan or Irak documentaries but here are some links I have : First, some on Afghanistan : About winning hearts and minds : The push to Bagdad-Iraqi Freedom : About the formation of ANA (very touching at the end) : (this one won't stay long on Youtube...) About Jack, a British soldier : About women on the front line in Afghanistan : Now, some on Irak : Fallujah : Irak war - NG : The push to Bagdad-Iraqi Freedom : Ummm... I think I'm gonna stop here ;) Cheers Laurius Asus P8Z68 Deluxe, Intel Core i7-2600K (3.4 GHz), Corsair Vengeance 2x4096 Mo DDR3 1866 MHz, SSD 120 Go Vertex 2, EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0 4Go (04G-P4-2978-KR), TM HOTAS Warthog #03797 (MB replaced), Saitek Combat Pro Rudder, TrackIR 5, TM Cougar MFDs with Lilliput 8" UM 80
