  2. I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of thank yous – you did fantastic work and I hope you find a way to get around the limitations! But the Blackhawk is great even if no weapons can be added.

And if you're looking for a different helo to work on because ED won't let you make the Blackhawk an official module: afaics Polychop really could use some manpower in creating the Kiowa... I'd love to see your skills applied to the OH-58, that would be a win-win situation.

    @BIGNEWY@NineLine

Could you maybe make this a sticky? This mod is excellent enough to deserve it.

  3. Not sure there will be default bindings because of the difference.

But OPPOTATOs profile might be a nice starting point for your own mapping. I’ve changed his profile a little bit to suit my own ideas and now I’m all set and just waiting for the Apache to be released… well, maybe I should spend quite more time in the Huey learning to fly choppers first, otherwise I’ll get task saturated real quick. 🙃

You're right, it definitely doesn't call for storming the kitchen... but you'd likely be a bit annoyed. 🙂

Of course I might be annoyed. And I’d say so. But ED have explained the reasons and I’m sure they’re working very hard to get the early access out of the door as soon as possible. So there is a very big difference between voicing some polite discontent at the delay and clamouring for instant release. I can see the flamewars from over here if ED dared to release module into EA that isn’t ready for this.

Anyway I’m outta here. I think it’s a better use of my time to practice my hovering skills in the Huey instead of arguing about this.

I paid for it. ED did not need to wait for my money.
The customer makes the business possible. As the customer, my desires have value.

If I was expected to just shut and wait like a good giver of money, then the videos of the module inspire the exact opposite. I would rather never have known that this was being made and then to just be happily surprised one day to see that it is for sale than to be dragged along, teased and disappointed like this.

Then I suggest you leave this forum and avoid having to see news of exciting new modules before they‘re released.

Money aside this is plain impolite to the devs and their work. Let me put it like this: I am/was a professional musician. If I haven’t set a definite date for a concert because I’m still practicing you won’t get me to perform. Because I’m not ready. If I’m not content with my performance the music isn’t ready for my audience. And then this is not about having paid money but about manners towards the artist who does his very best. ED devs are artists. Surely they deserve good manners too.

  6. The urge for instant gratification sure is a frightful thing.

I just came back from a very, very good restaurant. What can I say, I had to wait for the various dishes because good things take time. But at no point I felt compelled to storm into the kitchen and demand the half prepared dish from the chef. Which is what some people obviously want.

And I'm not the one getting worked up.  Everyone else is getting worked up on my "opinion"  I didn't say a single word against anyone having valid reasons for not wanting Orion.

Ah, thanks, actually I did miss this. Well, seems nice enough but isn’t for me for the reasons I mentioned.

I guess it’s time for me to leave this discussion since nobody from VKB is answering. Without new information there really isn’t a lot to discuss. I like their concept very much, but if they feel they can’t announce anything… Well, if TECS can be purchased when I want to buy a new throttle, fine. If not, a different company will get my money.

  8. 6 hours ago, Taz1004 said:

If Winwing keeps selling their Orion throttle for $236, and TECS is supposed to be around $200, I see no reason to buy TECS over Winwing.  Winwing has far more buttons on the base too.  Problem is Winwing keeps going out of stock...  My guess is VKB already lost a lot of potential customers to Winwing.

I’m not interested in the Orion or in any specific throttle replica. And where on earth did you get the $236 quote for the Orion? I just had a look at their shop, handle  alone is $236, base is another $215. I guess that’s without shipping or tax. So that’s more than twice as much as the basic TECS price.

But tbh I can’t understand why everybody gets so worked up. It’s just a piece of hardware. I’m interested in TECS because the possibility of electronic detents seems nice and I’d like the thumbstick. But if VKB takes too long to announce a release date, well, too bad, I’ll get the Virpil or stick with my WH.

  9. Whoa, let‘s not completely derail this thread. Seems to me that tensions are a little bit high on all sides and nobody is doing himself any favours.

@fallout9As you can see there are quite some people interested in TECS and would very much like to have at least a vague idea if and maybe when it‘s coming (e.g. me). Can‘t you give us a very rough estimate when TECS might be released? Are we talking about probably this year or next or later? I‘d like to replace my WH Throttle and can wait. But not forever.

On a different note, that post really wasn‘t great publicity for your company, sorry.

@vr2viv Just stop it. When I had some extremely long and annoying problems with HP customer support because my Reverb broke, I kept it between me and HP, because a public flamefest wouldn‘t have helped. I suggest you do the same thing.

I don't know to say you are naive or what is more suitable. He is expressing his anger and disappointment to VKB for a company that has not achieved any results after 4 years.  In addition, should you also think about whether a company with such incompetence, should you buy it even VKB make this happen?

Thanks for not outright calling me stupid, I guess. So in reciprocity I will return the favour.

As to how long it takes VKB to present a finished product (a „result“), well, a lot has happened in the meantime. Four years for an innovative, perfectly designed product, that can be bought at the time it is officially released, is almost nothing, especially in times of Covid-19.

So maybe VKB can be criticised for their silence. I would dearly like to have some news (and of course their throttle even more). But they didn’t promise any release date, on the contrary they said „TECS is not going to be released by end of lunar year“. Of course there are expectations from their customers. But releasing a badly designed product would have a far worse impact on their reputation than waiting until the design and manufacturing is just right. As I said, a lot may be riding on this.

And honestly I don’t know how you can see any „incompetence“ on their part. I don’t own any devices from VKB (yet), but afaik their hardware is beyond reproach. If somebody is disappointed by the lack of news I can understand that (and I’m unhappy too), but „incompetence“? No.

  11. Now see, even Duke Nukem Forever was released, it just took some patience. 😉

But honestly I can’t see why there wouldn’t be a VKB Throttle in the future. There’s definitely a market and also I guess there’s quite a lot of prestige riding on this. If VKB wants to be seen as one of the best hardware providers many people will expect a complete lineup from them, including a throttle. So wait and see. Better they take some more time and get it completely right.

  12. I completely agree with you! Of course it's extremely hard for ED to provide such an enormously detailed and high quality sim. And because of that I'll take what is offered and be glad. After all it could be Cyberpunk 2077. I hope ED will find a way to ensure a steady stream of revenue without alienating the user base. For me a small(!) subscription fee would be ok but I can understand very well that this is a point that would inflame tempers really quick.

It's just that the performance loss hit me really hard and I hadn't expected that after my time out. But I just gave myself an early xmas present. On monday I should be the proud owner of an RX6900XT. I hope that means goodbye, 25fps! 🤩

  13. Yes, it's a bit of a catch-22, isn't it? It would have to be excellently and for a long time communicated and the benefits would need to be extremely clear.

Of course neither am I keen to spend more money. But in all fairness we've paid for the modules we owned. Not for DCS Core. Remember the bit about paying again for the updated (or whatever) Warthog module? That was something I don't want to see again.

If there were a stable revenue source it would make reliable planning a lot simpler for ED. And as much as I normally hate paying subscription fees I would hate seeing DCS slowly becoming obsolete due to insufficent development funding even more.

Of course, maybe ED has some deals with AF training programs that might fund this development. If that's the case, good for them and us. But seeing how long the switch to Vulkan takes, I'm not too sure about that.

Yep, it colud look a little strange but its logical for me ;). I have a lot of profiles for TARGET for TH Warthog (for each module) BUT I bought collective from Virpil (for Apache for example) and id like to do only profile in Gremlin for this the new one tool, for the rest (like joystick and throtlle Id like to use my old TARGET profiles).

Ok, I get that. Duplicating things that work doesn't really make sense. 🙂

So did you get it to work with Target and Gremlin at the same time?

I understand your frustration, I do, as I had to tweak settings to get what I have, especially with the 3GB of Ram Handicap.

The thing everyone should understand with DCS World, is everything is simulated, so one setting while it may seem useless affects the CPU Load and in turn affects GPU instruction flow, etc.

This isn't Ace Combat, it's a tremendously in-depth simulation, and requires a lot of tuning for each hardware set to run fluidly.
One has to understand each setting, and what it does and how it affects the simulation and understand the limits of their hardware.

Hey SZ, sorry for the late reply. Did I mention I have a horrible live-work-balance?

I understand what you mean and that is the reason I'm still patiently waiting for Vulkan and general improvements.

But in my honest opinion ED is in a trap of its of making and I'm sure ED knows this too. Revenue is created solely by selling and adding new content, which means by necessity development is skewed towards new modules and focus will shift to new aircraft as soon as an early access module is deemed stable enough to sell it without too bad reviews. (Sorry, that is phrased quite bluntly and I do not mean to imply that EDs modules were bad in any way. – In most cases I think they are fantastic.)

OTOH bug fixing and working on the core are in some important ways pro bono work. DCS core doesn't generate any income by itself but relies on selling modules. Which can only be sold once. That in itself disincentivizes the sorely needed development of the graphics engine (Vulkan) and other useful improvements. It just doesn't pay for itself, I guess.

It's not a coincidence that subscription based models are more and more common for software that needs constant development. As little as I like Adobes scheme I would be happy to pay a (not too high) subscription fee for DCS Core. Maybe it could be done in a way that if you canceled your subscription you would retain access to the last version you paid for but wouldn't get new features. Combine this with extensive free to try periods to create demand just as ED already does. But that's just from the top of my head.

However, I think that's the way to go. It would have to be carefully balanced money-wise and of course there'd need to be obvious improvements to DCS Core. But all in all that should create quite some more resources for things that seem to be understaffed atm.

Sorry for this wall of text. Of course I could be completely wrong. But after following DCS development for a few years I think that unlikely.

for the time being I run a R7970 Lightning, which is 10 years old and unsupported now by AMD, and I get 30 FPS on Med, and 45-60 on low in VR.

    Congratulations.

But exactly that is my point. I’m an old enough hand at tuning my rig and given enough time I might get a somewhat better performance out of it. But sorry: I’m running an overclocked i7-8700k and my 2070S is also moderately overclocked. There shouldn’t be any need to spend hours and hours to get this sim working on low settings with a halfway decent framerate. And DCS shouldn’t offer wildly varying results and waste precious resources in such a blatant manner. If I want to tinker with hardware I can do that at work. Here I want to learn flying. And assertions like „I don’t have that problem“ don’t really help in the face of well known shortcomings of DCS.

So again: Sorry if I sound negative, it’s not my intention to bash DCS and the developers. I keep my fingers crossed that Vulkan will offer real improvements. But with performance as it is of now it hurts me to use DCS instead of being a joy. Sorry. I hope this too will pass.

  17. I just came back from a longer hiatus and gave 2.7.8 a little try. Started fpsVR to see how big the performance hit might be. Oh boy, my 2070S was completely in the red, even after I set almost everything to low/off. I guess another round of rig tuning would be in order.

But as much as I do love tinkering with hardware I don‘t have the time. And brute-forcing it by buying a 3080Ti from a scalper is also out of the question – there‘s a limit to how much rip off I‘m willing to accept. For me that‘s really a big turn-off, sorry to say. Endlessly tinkering to get halfway acceptable frametimes wastes lots of precious time and I‘m not willing to fork so much money over for a 3080Ti, especially since other sims prove that this shouldn‘t be necessary.

I‘m sorry if this sounds quite negative but Vulkan – and some really tangible improvements – can‘t come fast enough. Otherwise I fear that I will loose all interest in DCS because it‘s simply too much hassle. And I‘d be very surprised if I were the only one. Hopefully it won‘t come to this, that would really be a shame! So let‘s hope for Vulkan magic soon™!

    Hello,

I have a little different question - does Joystick Gremlin Software (active) can work with TARGET (Thrustmaster) it the same time:

    - for example - Id like to use my TH profile for TH product but for the rest of my controlers Id like to use Gremlin, so both software in the same time.

    Is it possible?

Hey, sorry, I didn‘t see your post earlier.

Tbh I was so frustrated by Target that I completely uninstalled the app. I guess you should be able to use both Target and Gremlin as long as you don‘t enable your TM hardware in Gremlin resp. Vjoy. But honestly I‘m not sure what the point of using both at the same time would be. I think with the exception of controlling the leds of the WH throttle Gremlin should be able to do everything Target does.
