Mission 5 Radio presets
Cyking replied to Funk_'s topic in DCS: F-4E - Northern Defenders 'Phantoms Rising' Campaign
Hey, Thank you for your feedbackIt is already fixed on my end and should be fixed with the next dcs patch on your end. Meanwhile you need to tune in the channels manually or see screenshot in post above where you see the „wrong“ presets as they are set now. But seems you already found that workaround. Happy to hear you and enjoy it so far -
To me, it sounds like you're doing everything right. The targets are defined in the mission editor, and he should engage the convoy once it's spotted. I’ll take another look at it. When you give him the order, do you hear any AI response on the radio? Regarding the fuel issue: if the AI is already low on fuel when you reach the target area, it likely means you cruised at a fairly high speed on the way to the AO. The AI performs a running rendezvous, which means he needs to fly faster than you to catch up. If you're going too fast, e.g., full mil, he may need to go into afterburner just to rejoin. I recommend keeping an eye on your speed and giving him some space to rejoin more efficiently. In my testing, I never encountered this issue, only occasionally on the way back, where I usually send him to the tanker. That said, I’ll check if there’s a way to solve the fuel problem, possibly by giving him unlimited fuel. I’m not sure if that’s possible, since the wingman is part of the player group in the mission editor, but I’ll look into it.

Hi, thanks a lot for taking the time to share your feedback! I totally understand if the campaign didn’t click with you, humor is always a matter of taste, and it’s absolutely fine if it wasn’t for you. To clarify: the whole “Köttbullar” or food-related banter actually makes up only about 2–3% of the dialogue across the entire campaign. These lighter moments are deliberately placed outside of combat zones and not during mission-critical phases. My intention as mission designer was to use that kind of dialogue to break up longer transfer or transit phases, and to add a bit of personality and contrast to the otherwise grim, fictional war setting. Even in real conflicts, some degree of human or dark humor is not uncommon among soldiers under pressure. That said, I completely respect if that tone doesn't work for you. Again, taste differs. For future, I’ll definitely consider adding an option to disable non-essential dialogue for players who prefer a stricter tone. Thanks again. Yes, Sweden and Finland

Phenomanal Campaign
Cyking replied to GimmeYourShoes's topic in DCS: F-4E - Northern Defenders 'Phantoms Rising' Campaign
Wow, great to hear you made it through and had a good time! Really appreciate the support, thank you! -
Thanks! I've already made the change on my end and will include it in the next patch. I had to stop their patrol route, sadly they're just standing there now. The route was placed well away from the road and taxiway, but for some reason they keep deciding to walk on the road anyway. Maybe they're trying to avoid getting their feet wet from all the snow … But no idea what's going on with the pathfinding worked fine the last couple of months, but thanks again for reporting it.

Hey @Ragnock First of all, thanks for your honest and detailed feedback – and with your very first forum post, no less! That shows how important the topic is to you, and I really appreciate that. After reading your post, I jumped into DCS and flew the mission again. I was able to complete it successfully by landing on the container, and from my perspective, the mission is working as intended. BUT – I completely agree that this mission is a tough one. And the janky damage model of the container can definitely cause issues if your landing is too fast or imprecise. That’s exactly why I added the hover option as an alternative way to complete the task and reduce frustration. If that option isn’t working properly anymore, I’ll definitely look into it again. About the hover part – could you clarify what you mean by “the countdown gets interrupted”? For future reports, it would be really helpful if you could share a .trk file or a screenshot of the message log. That makes it easier for me to understand exactly what's happening on your end. That said, I’ll check the trigger logic again right after this. A few words about the intention behind the mission: From the very beginning, this mission was designed to annoy you. It's that mission, the one everyone hates. It's meant to be hard, maybe even a little frustrating, and yes, maybe I’m channeling a bit of a sadistic streak here . But the idea is that finally beating it makes the success all the more satisfying. I’ve tried using other ships, but the moment I switch to something with a helipad, the mission completely loses its original character and purpose. For me, it’s a very fine line between making everyone happy and staying true to my vision for the mission. Here’s what I’ll do going forward: I’ll recheck the hover alternative to make sure the trigger is still working properly. I’ll also add an F10 radio option at the start of the mission that lets players switch to an “easy mode” – replacing the container ship with the SS Atlantic Conveyor, which has a proper helipad. That way, there’s a fair option for those who want the challenge and for those who simply want to complete the mission and move on.

Mission 5, radio presets off
Cyking replied to Cyberadje's topic in DCS: F-4E - Northern Defenders 'Phantoms Rising' Campaign
Hey Gents, @GimmeYourShoes thx for confirming. I also checked and can confirm i messed it up, my fault. One of these typical last minute changes and here you can see the result. The Atis was one of last elements I added and also changed some of the radio preset order, seems here I did not test it correctly. It is fixed on my end now and I will push to ED for next update. Meanwhile workaround is you have to tune in the channels manually. Below a screenshot of the presets how they are in the mission right now. As you can see 2 and 3 are both ATIS, the 4 is Kiruna Tower. Darkstar is missing and you need to tune manually on 348.7, sorry for that. -

should be fixed with todays patch. -
Thanks again for your feedback, only this helps to make it better. In the end, that’s exactly my goal: a mix between Ace Combat-style gameplay and hardcore mil-sim. Something with a bit more focus on action and story, and a bit less on study-level systems — because let’s face it, just getting a DCS aircraft airborne and some weapons deployed can be a challange especially for more casual players. I want to give players a space where they can have fun with their new module, wrapped in a compelling scenario with a strong narrative. It’s all garnished with just enough realism to keep the experience immersive without becoming overwhelming. At least this is what I am aiming for. Last but not least, getting the difficulty level right — especially in terms of being beginner-friendly — is always a challenge. I've been into DCS and various modules for several years now, playing single player, PvE, and loving PvP. So I'd consider myself a fairly experienced DCS pilot. What feels manageable or even easy to me can be quite tough for someone new to the sim. I’m still working on finding the right balance, and feedback like yours is extremely helpful in that process. So please keep it coming!

Hi @DCS.Fighter.Masi, Thanks a lot for your feedback. I truly appreciate constructive criticism like this. It's incredibly valuable to help me improve this campaign and future ones. Let me address some of the points you brought up: Briefings: You're absolutely right — the spoken briefing is nearly identical to the written one. That was intentional. The idea was to minimize the need for additional reading or using a second screen/PDF, so players can jump straight into the cockpit. Think of it as a more immersive alternative to reading walls of text. First Sortie – Tasking & Difficulty: Yes, it's definitely not a beginner mission. As @Zone5 mentioned earlier, it's designed to reflect the kind of challenges the Luftwaffe faced back in the day. Jester gives you some hints en route to the target area, and it’s worth noting: you don’t have to shoot down all four aircraft yourself to complete the mission. The mission outcome remains the same — only Jester’s debriefing changes depending on how many you downed. Still, I’ll take your point about making it a bit more forgiving under consideration for future updates or follow-ups. Voiceover Bug: Thanks for spotting the misplaced voice line — I’ll check and fix that! Radio Chatter & Voice Distinction: Yes, radio chatter can be a bit demanding, just like in real ops — you really need to pay attention to figure out what’s meant for you. Mixing default AI radio calls with custom voiceovers is a bit of a tradeoff — it adds atmosphere and situational awareness, but I agree it’s not perfect. I'm genuinely curious what others think about this approach because till the end of development I still was not sure to leave the AI calls in or not. Liveries & Map Choice: I totally get the wish for custom liveries. I’d love to include them too! At the current state of my mission builder skillset i am not able to create them by myself, but I would love to do that in future. But to be honest, creating a DCS campaign is mostly a solo, low-budget effort, and for things like liveries and voice acting I rely on volunteers. Sadly, I couldn't find someone to help with liveries without significant costs. If anyone wants to contribute in this area — I’d be thrilled to collaborate! As for the Kola map: It’s not perfect visually, especially compared to newer maps like Germany Cold War but it is getting better and better in my opinion. And sometimes people forget, this area is not that populated like germany e.g. so of course you have way more bare land, forrest and seas without anything else. At the time of development, Kola was the only one that fit the setting and I’d definitely love to explore the Germany Cold War map in future campaigns. Thanks again — it’s feedback like yours that helps this campaign grow and improve. I hope you continue to enjoy the upcoming missions, and I’ll do my best to keep improving every aspect: from better voiceovers and briefings to visuals and gameplay balance.

Hey Gents, Good news: I was able to narrow down the CTD. I'm still not 100% sure what causes it, but I managed to implement a temporary fix that prevents the mission from crashing. It seems that the issue is related to the carrier group’s self-defense behavior. After disabling it, the mission no longer crashes. I've sent the mission to ED for further investigation. Long story short: with the next patch, the mission should no longer crash for you guys. The downside is that, for now, the carrier group won’t defend itself until a final fix is found. However, this has no impact on your actual mission experience.

Kola map really?
Cyking replied to fastfed's topic in DCS: F-4E - Northern Defenders 'Phantoms Rising' Campaign
I'm always happy to surprise people. That said, why is a "Cold War gone hot" scenario on the Kola map surprising? It’s actually a natural fit if you think about it. Just look back at classics like EF2000 or Jane’s Combat Simulations. When I choose a map, I focus on what suits the scenario best, not necessarily what is the most commonly owned or flown. And with the latest updates from Orbx, the Kola map has really started to shine—it’s evolving into a beautiful and immersive environment. Of course, everyone is free to have their own opinion. But personally, I really like it—and I believe it’s a perfect match for the setting I’m going for. One last note: developing a campaign takes several months—often a year or more. When I started this project, there was no Germany Cold War map available. But rest assured the alternate 1985 story will eventually move into Germany as well.- 9 replies

Hey @SAEVONIX That looks like sth has changed with the parking positions on the map, let me check and fix that. Sorry for that, not sure if Ugra has changed sth with the parking spots. -
Hey guys, Just a quick update: I'm back from vacation and tested the mission today. Unfortunately, I can confirm that it crashes for me as well, and honestly, I'm a bit at a loss as to what might be causing it. I've already reached out to ED for support—maybe it's a DCS-related issue rather than something caused by the mission itself. I'll also put together a more stripped-down test version of the mission to help narrow down the root cause. @Jack Chief I also checked the "Spacebar for Bogey Dope" function. It worked fine on my end. Did you try pressing it a second or third time after not getting a response initially? Sorry for the inconvenience—I'm actively working on getting it fixed as soon as possible.

thank your for that, right now I have no idea why the crash happens, usually the miz itself does not make dcs crash and there are not that many units active … Unfortunately the launch of the campaign came with my holiday and I will be back on my pc on Wednesday. Some testers already try to replicate the issue, I need to wait for their results. I am sorry for everyone who occurs the issue, I will keep you all updated. Meanwhile you have to skip the mission. And please keep posting your logs / tracks if a crash for you happens.

Haunted by my wingman

Hi @Mike_CK Sorry your wingman is not talking to you. The guy talking to you and giving some comments on your flight skills is Jester the WSO Regarding the map, you can be sure there will be sth for Germany in future too …
