It is next to ´´saltfjellet´´ south of Bodo. Hopefully they have learnt something from SA even tho it´s a different team, but yeah performance will be crucial.

ED published a fresh youtube short on 12.april: ´´Can you name this map?´´ Yes I think we can.
-
Nothing new to report here? Dates, beta or anything? I hope ORBX can give some kind of clue to all of us waiting for this map, especially now that there have been many clips and screenshots from it.

It's Arnøy south west of Bodø, the island right behind the hornet.

Raftsundet and Ofotfjorden is what you see in 2024 and Beyond.

DCS World 2023 Screenshots and Video Thread

A little F-18C Hornet Blue Angels formation fun. What you think? -
Is there any update on this issue now? DCS is in a really good state these days and better than ever, but I just really need the targets and obects to be a little bigger on my 2K resolution monitor. That's the only thing bothering me atm. Tried 1080 but it just dosnt work on a 42'' 2k monitor.

I will test later today and update the original post. If it is an alignment it should only orient itself to where it is on the earth (lat/long) and then calculate true north based on earth rotation, I don't think it can fix the drift rate (unless it also performs a calibration in this process). I will only guess the PVU works to put ground speed into the equation which tell the airplane how it's moving while sensing the gravity and earth rotation. I would also guess it would require a specific flight profile with an optimal speed, altitude, bank/pitch limitations and so on the be working correctly. Have not tried CCIP yet, but a INS fix 6-8 miles before a target point in CCRP works really well. It is great fun to play around without the GPS a little also to see how it worked in the ´´good old days.´´

Thank you Tholozor. I see the IFA RDR works independent on radar settings (even when OFF) so I gues it is not fully implemented either, but rather just thrown in there to make it possible to re-align without GPS if needed?

This is an overview of the INS system in the F-18C as the manual is outdated. I hope this information can be useful for some of you. Preliminary condition for alignment: Parking brake ON Left engine >60% N1 Normal alignment time 8 minutes Stored heading alignment 90 seconds. This do not any require pre-alignment and shutdown beforehand or special settings in mission editor, and therefore will be available on first startup. Alignment process is shown in a quality number on the HSI: - NO ATT = INS warm up and leveling phase - 99 = starting of course alignment. The number is decreasing as alignment improves and go into fine alignment - 0,5 OK = alignment finnished. Turn INS knob to NAV (without GPS available) or IFA for GPS assisted INS (AINS) before flight. Ground/carrier alignment: - CV CBL - Alignment on ship using external cable from ship to aircraft for initial position. Selected automatically with INS knob to ''CV'' - CV RF - Alignment on ship using datalink. Not implemented. - CV MAN - Pilot mus manually insert initial position. Not implemented. - GND - used for alignment on ground. Waypoint 0 is the initial reference position for alignment and automatically set to your position on spawn. Waypoint 0 coordinates will show on HSI while aligning. Note: *During CV alginment, NO WYPTS will show below ''qual'' and ''time'' on HSI as initial position is slaved to carrier using either CBL or RF. *Stored heading is possible in both CV and GND alignment. If the INS looses alignment in flight due to a system failure, perform the following: In flight alignment without GPS available: - set INS knob to IFA and IFA RDR will show on HSI. This uses positional velocity updates from radar (PVU) to align INS. In flight alignment with GPS available: - set INS knob to IFA and IFA GPS will show on HSI. Note: Approx time for IFA RDR/GPS is 10 minutes. Other: On the INS panel you can also select - TEST and GB - Gyro Bias calibration is not implemented. -GYRO - This is using the INS system as a attitude and heading reference system only and it will not give any position outputs. NON GPS Environment - set mission date before 1986. If playing redfor after 1986, set ''unrestricted sat/nav'' to OFF in mission editor. GPS is available in missions set after 1986, but redfor planes need to have ''unrestricted sat/nav'' in ME set to ON . (picture from ED F-18C manual) Drift rate on the INS without the GPS correction is exessive and require updates regularly. How to update the INS position during flight: - Tacan update: tune into an tacan station available in the tacan database (HSI->DATA->TCN). Press UPDT on HSI and select TCN. You can then choose to select ACPT or RJT, when clicking accept the INS position is updated. Approx 30 feet accuracy. - Waypoint fix: target designate your waypoint and fly over it's position on the map. It must be easy to recognize from the airplane, for instance the end of a runway, a special building etc. Your hud or HMD will most likeley show the waypoint has drifted off the real position. Press DSG before you fly over the point and ACPT the moment you are right above it. INS is now updated accordingly. - AUTO and MAP function is not implemented Note: when updating the position the top middle part of HSI is supposed show a correction value before you accept or reject it, but this is not implemented.

Would it be possible after end of flight, when exiting the mission, to save the aircraft in it's current state and use this exact aircraft for next mission? It would then record landings, flight hours and other usage parameters to generate failures in the coming missions, completely independent on the mission itself. So failures then are not completely random like now but linked together with the use of you airplane. For instance if you have several hard landings in one or two missions maybe on the third one you get a failure on the landing gear. And you would have to shut it down properly after each flight iaw procedures to avoid different failures on next startup. It would really require you to treat the aircraft good and follow procedures the whole process from start to stop in a campaign. This could potentially be a little complex but everything is possible in the future of DCS

No point in wishing for specific FF modern redfor planes. It's all about the legal rights to create them in FF. If ED is allowed sometime in the future we should be really happy to get one no matter wich type it would be.

I hope they can focus on different types of military aviation apart from fighters a little bit more in the future. Like the C130 will be a great module because it is something different from all other modules. With the Spit, A-4E, F-5, F-18 and F-16 as my study level modules I have covered a lot of the development of (western) fighters in different eras and I don't really feel the need for more fighter modules. Now I would like to fly a different type of aircraft like the C130 and do other types of missions. Tactical air transport for instance. What if we could get a P3 Orion in the future to do ASW and ASuW missions? Even though performance on sonar systems is highly classified they could make their own data on this and it would not matter. How about flying an air to air refueling aircraft of some sort? I think with the high fidelity modules coming out now players will also be saturated and not just jump onto new modules unless it's something different. That is probably why many want the modern redfor airplanes in FF, it's different from all the western airplanes and they want to explore new things.

Interesting. Looks like they have sorted out the buttons differently this time with the selective jettison from POC to POT. Could very well be the next buy for me.
-
Do anyone know when the Combat and take off panels are back in stock? They have been out of stock for quite a while now.
-
Absolutely! When this happens I will start buing campaigns and probaly all of them for my modules.

Thanks for the answers. Let's hope something happens with this in the future. It looks to me like the multiplayer/coop flying is becoming more and more popular now than it used to be in the old days of DCS. I think you are right about the payment also, buying an individual license would be easier.

My flight group exclusively fly online together on private servers and we make our own missions and fly some of those from the user files. However we are not professional mission makers and the quality on the uploaded ones can vary a lot. We would definatley pay for COOP campaigns with 2-5 clients from some of the serious campaigns makers around here. To this point I have not seen any of the released campaigns that are COOP. Is there a technical reason for this or is there just not a market for it? If a COOP campaign is created it would be nice to be able to choose the amount of clients you need before purchase, and the end price is based on that. Maybe a discount can added depending on how many clients you choose. For example the price with 2 clients is 25$, 3 clients 30$, and 5 clients 40$. Then only one of our group member would need to purchase the campaign and the rest could join in on his multiplayer server. The creator is also getting paid for the number of people flying it. What do you think? Would love to hear the opinion from some campaigns creators also!

Alot of interesting scenarios can be set up in this map. Air and naval warefare with NATO and Russia, a Russian/Finnish land invasion or some sort of NATO training with USMC, British or other NATO troops in the artic -just to mention something. The Norwegian Airforce have operated Spitfire, Sabre, F-5, Huey and F-16 which are all modules in DCS. Then you have the Finnish airforce with its F-18 and Sweden with its Viggen, appropriate for a cold war scenario. I hope we can have som good multiplayer 2-5 player coop-missions on this map. I'm looking forward to do low level formation flight in between the fjords and mountains. Something to make this map stand out as someone mentioned here is to do the lighting correctly. In the winter you have the long dark days with slight daylight for a couple of hours. In the summer the sun is up all day. I guess it is not possible to make, but can the skies be filled with some sort of northern light? That would truly be amazing.

Many of us nordic and scandinavian DCS players are looking forward to the Kola Map -if it would release one day. The latest and only news on this is from september 22 in the Orbx subforum, so it would be nice if anyone could provide an little update on this one.

For me and my DCS group this ready room feature is really excting news. Beeing able to talk (on discord or in game) and sitting in the same briefing room in the beginning of the mission, seeing each other and seeing the mission briefing and going over the details is great. I hope they make it easy to set up the briefings and making a way to draw on the slides as well as bringing in pictures/info from the encyclopedia. We have tried this in VTOL VR (which has a lot less complex missions) so it will be a great feature in DCS for sure.

Thank you for the link to the 476th fighter group Rudel, now I have some good quality flight crew checklist for the F-5, F-18 and F-16. I'll check out the Mirage aswell as my next module. These checklists are basically what I am asking for to be released as part of an module, but I see we all have different opinions on this. I'm working with military aviation in real life so having these and using them in operations are second nature for me. The kneeboard generator also looks like a nice tool, I will definitely try that one out.

It would be easy for the developers to make this as they have already made the manual. A standard checklist could include basic normal procedures (start up, taxi, take off etc), a couple of emergency procedures, armament deployment and trim settings for different weight for a start. It would make switching from aircraft to aircraft much easier and more joyable. I dont want to sit down and make all the checklist on my own for each airplane, neither should it be nessecary for me to do this. Some userfiles checklist are good for some modules, some are bad for other modules. I have a tablet and a smartphone but I'm still missing the checklists. Scrolling though a 200 page PDF to find lets say your landing configuration is not what this is about. It should be as simple as bringing up the kneeboard, go to page X and there you go. I would consider this as just as an important part of an module as a accurate flight model or whatever.
