By the time the M concept was taken up, Spain was using the F1 as a mud mover far more often than an interceptor. The main focus was cockpit modernization and added bombing capabilities by upgrading the same radar with ground ranging and better ground mapping. Spain joined NATO and obtained F18s in the early/mid 80s and thus the transition in the F1s role. I get the disappointment, but M should still be a fabulous airframe, especially with Aerges at the helm.
