First of all great aircraft, really enjoying it even with a steep learning curve as a DCS newcomer. secondly well done on using proper date format dd-mm-yyyy in the subject rather than the American silliness! but for the update itself, does this apply to older versions of dcs or just the latest? actually how can I check module version?

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but I’m considering head tracking. Currently use two hats for pov and movement but these have limitations, especially in dogfighting. so am looking at trackers. Obviously track ir is the go to as it has been around the longest but there are newer and cheaper alternatives. I think I have looked at them all, or at least most of them. but there are two things I would like to consider: prefer not to have a wearable (unless it can be head/ear mounted) as I dont use a head set just now ir seems the most accurate vs face tracking but prolonged exposure can cause eye damage so curious as to what people use on here and what they might have done to overcome the above. would prefer to buy something that comes with its own camera/receiver, I don’t use a webcam. Also don’t like vr.

I was meaning more for locking the view onto target after it has been acquired. You would acquire same way you would in real life, by looking. In real life you can naturally lock to the target so it would be good to have this same feature in dcs. but it brings an important point, you do lose things by being in a seat and staring at a screen in a single direction and limited fov. So having assistance to help offset that can be useful. yeah instrument approaches are easy, but I’m talking about vfr. Not all airfields have tacan or ils.

Can I straight-swap an NVIDIA 2070 with a 3080Ti?
CTB replied to NorthernMenace's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yes, I recently did the same. Went from 2 x gtx1070 to a rtx 3080ti. All you need to do is swap the card and update drivers. It is advised to delete the shaders folder in dcs so they can be rebuilt for the new card. I went from about 70-90fps to 120-150fps with same settings. Probably cpu and pci-e limited. I have turned the settings up and set a frame limit of 72fps (144Hz) monitor. I killed one of my 1070 cards so am considering putting the second one in for pysX, had this arrangement previously. If you are considering changing processor, check motherboard or socket compatibility first. If you need to change motherboard it needs a reinstall of windows. For me with a custom install a right pain. But like me you may also be limited in pci-e bandwidth, so cpu upgrade (if possible) may not do much at all. You can only resolve that by changing motherboard with a newer chipset. I’ve got z370 chipset, which is pci 3 and 8th gen cpu. Considering going on to 9th gen as it has same socket but I dont think it will give me much more as I will be pci limited, even though it has 2 more cores. Would have to go to pci 4 or 5 to resolve but i dont want to change motherboard. Some of the new motherboards are really expensive. Changing card usually gives a noticeable increase but you have to consider these other factors. -
Thats not great for situational awareness though? And you would be able to 'padlock' your view in real life to a missile or threat aircraft. Its more for convenience and control rather for defeating realism. Also, another reason for using the map (and I tend to agree with you on the part of realism) is because it is sometimes just too difficult to spot an airfield, even when you are close by.

Answer to both is that I don't want to reinstall the software thats on it.

Just realised another thing, the drive I want to clone onto new drive is MBR partition table. No biggie as its not going to be a bootable drive and its not more than 2TB. If I were to switch to GPT then I would have to reinstall the other software.

I've got an issue between lights and shadows. Basically cockpit is too dark to read instruments but outside is fine. This was with gamma set 1.4, turned it up but outside is now a bit washed out. It was a lot worse when facing the sun, ie guages in shadow. Also noticing a lot of smears and reflection on cockpit glass and instrument screens. I've tried the shaders mod and I don't think it made any difference. I understand its for realism, but I don't mind reducing realism to be able to see.

missing info Limited external view with F2
CTB replied to MadMonty's topic in View and Spotting Bugs
Have you switched mouselook mode? (LAlt+C). I do this (mapped to mouse button 3) and it works fine for me. -
I have the same issue in v2.5.6. I did not realise it was a bug though.

F-14A/B Tomcat Combat Fundamentals Guide and Checklist

thanks, downloaded for a wee look see. -
I guess most of you will have track IR. But even then do you use padlock views? eg to padlock to an aircraft(s) or incoming missile(s). I use a finger hat on throttle for view commands, up is map centre is cockpit, down is HUD only, which leaves right and left for missile and aircraft. Missile to target is also useful for checking kill, but not essential. But the question is what command do you use? I managed to get padlock to nearest aircraft but its out of the cockpit not hugely realistic. I guess another question would be what map view do you use? I tend to use fixed map rather than locked to aircraft, as the latter tends to be zoomed in too much and its a pain to zoom out when you are flying. Ideally it would switch upon repeat press of the button, I guess I could map zoom to a slider but still not ideal (eg for landing when you want to see taxi & parking).

Took some fire, splashed bandits and returned home. Lost a lot of control so slight mishap on landing, did 180 under braking and faced back to where I came, but still walking away from this one. nice skin, I used to have that pattern on a model aircraft. Where did you get it? nullBuzzing the tower & strip in Vegas

Looking for some advise on getting a mic, probably head wearable so can go with tracker. Maybe with speaker for realism on voice/radio comms. Have looked at a couple of cheap options and they should do the job, but was curious as to what other people are using and how they have set up. No looking for anything fancy or high end, just want to be able to speak (combine with a head tracker) and possibly have radio/voice in ear. I have a 3.1ch setup for PC audio so would want to continue using that for game sounds, separating radio comms into ear with headset. But may not want to split all voice comms, not sure if that is possible.
