Friday April 25, 2014 Development Update – Taking Flight
HotTom replied to luthier1's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
REALLY impressive progress! Thanks for the update! -
Good video! You should emphasize that you really win it at the merge when you go right into the vertical.

I agree, HT (great initials!). I once put more than 360 hits in the Dora before it came down. 200+ isn't unusual.
-
Actually, in both the sim and real life, the Mustang is a bit slower than the Dora at lower altitudes and can outclimb it (The P-51 was not a great climber). Look it up. Whatever I say, Merlin says the opposite. I wonder why I kill that Dora so regularly I rarely bother anymore. Maybe I know what I'm doing. ;)

Keep your radiators (both oil and coolant) open for at least 20 seconds (so they open fully; you have to hold them there or they'll pop back into neutral and stay at their last setting) and then leave them there. If you're heating up, go into a shallow dive and build up speed so there is more air passing over the radiators. The Packard engine stays happiest at 250 mph or faster. If you overheat, drop into full rich mixture setting until you cool down. Keep the Dora on your Lift Line as much as possible. Don't try to match his zoom climbs; you can't. Similarly, he can out run you in level flight, even if you are using WEP. Let him go. He'll be back. Eventually, he will try to RTB (the airfield by the lake) and he will be vulnerable. For the accelerated stalls, get a force feedback stick. I always have plenty of warning with my G940. You'll figure it out. Hope that helps.

New to P-51: Several Questions and Help Needed
HotTom replied to marcus4hire's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Good luck with it. The best advice I can give is only tweak/change one thing at a time. Sounds like you are juggling more than one ball. -

New to P-51: Several Questions and Help Needed
HotTom replied to marcus4hire's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
That's an odd resolution you are using (according to the screen shot). Are you using the native resolution your monitor was designed for? You should be. Is the resolution on your monitor the same as the resolution you are selecting for the game? It should be. The aspect ratio is all screwed up but that may be as a result of the resolution setting. Try resetting both your monitor resolution to its recommended values and then make the game resolution the same as the monitor and see how it looks. -

Agreed. It will look better blank than with a bogus symbol. -
Westland Lysander - Anyone else want one?

Right after they build me my Mosquito, I'll support you on this.:smilewink: -
Found this in You Tube, says pretty much the same as the P-51D manual although gives more emphasis to ailerons: I do wish we had wind socks on the air fields. You'll notice in the film the FAA recommends diverting to another field if the cross wind speed is 20 percent of stall speed, which is around 90-95 mph for the P-51D) with wheels down. That means the "storm" takeoff and landings at 9 m/s (or about 18 mph) is right on the edge. When you can handle those, pin on your wings! I still have trouble with the storm setting, especially landing.

I haven't watched your tracks (not willing to invest that much time, sorry:() but here are some thoughts: *You don't mention the wind direction. Are you aware that the nose of the plane will turn INTO the wind in a cross wind because the lighter tail with that big fin is being weathervaned or pushed away from the wind? That's kind of a crucial concept. *As to using the 5 degree rudder trim, I don't use it with a crosswind because it just adds another factor I have to consider but your mileage may very. *The manual (P. 130) advises (in a cross wind) keeping the tail down ("keep the aircraft firmly on the runway") until you reach takeoff speed. In a normal takeoff I gradually release pressure on the stick (and thus the tailwheel) as I gain speed. With a cross wind, keep the stick fully back as long as I can and only start easing up on it after I am well over 100 mph. That means a longer takeoff run but there's always plenty of runway. It's not always pretty but it usually works. *The manual also suggests (correctly) that you crab into the wind as soon as you are airborne. Again, you need to know the wind direction relative to your aircraft so you can turn into it (remember the nose already wants to go that way -- into the wind -- because the tail is being pushed in the opposite direction). I always scribble the wind direction and speed (1 m/s equates to about 2 mph) down during the briefing and look at my compass to see where it it coming from relative to my path on the runway. A quick diagram on scarp paper also helps. You can use "Create Fast Mission" to practice (I do, I fly only against vehicle targets) and select clear skies (0 cross wind), Cloudy (1 m/s from 160 degrees), Precip (5 m/s from 24 degrees) or Stormy (9 m/s from 248 degrees). Remember the wind direction is true, not relative to your airplane. You have to look at your compass to figure where it is coming from relative to your plane on the runway). Hope that helps. RTFM. :book: :pilotfly: HT

What the article fails to point out is that 777 left Rise of Flight dead in the water when it migrated the whole staff over to BoS. RoF has possibly the dumbest AI in the history of flight sims (they canm't even land without crashing into hangars and trees), several of the aircraft perform nothing like their historical counterparts and never will be fixed, the in-game campaign has too many flaws to list here (a third party campaign available for free is much, much better), and the on line game play consists mostly of "Fly to the Big X on the Map and Tumble," much like IL2 dogfight arenas ( no thanks). The article correctly points out the limit on objects in the RoF engine (BoS uses the same one) leaves the ground war Missing in Action and the atmosphere is very sterile. Given the shoddy way 777 treated its RoF customers, leaving them with an unfinished game, it amazed me how many RoFers migrated to BoS. How anyone can be loyal to a developer that already has abandoned them once makes no sense to me. I refused to be treated that way and moved to DCS instead. So far, I am having a great time flying the magnificently modeled P-51D in DCS World. I'm looking forward to the future in DCS WW2. Interesting article but it left out some key points about 777 and included some critical points about DCS WW2 that already are obsolete. The opening of this forum goes a long, long way to solving the communication problem the article cites. Besides, I would rather fly the late war planes DCS WW2 is offering than creaky Eastern Front planes in BoS any day. Aloha.

Folks in Portland have a strange idea of "civil." Asking to give the devs some time seems civil to me. I'll give you the last word...since it seems important to you. Out here.

Whip, I didn't butt in. I offered my opinion (in an open forum) that all of this guessing about flyables and rewards was premature. We all want the answer and we want it from the organ grinder, not his monkey. I simply recommended that, now that Luthier's heard us, we give him time to respond. If that is uncivil, you live in a different world than I do. When I'm being uncivil, you'll know it. I actually thought I was preaching patience, which usually is considered civil. You were the one dragging the conversation into what you want to see on line (Post #37), which is probably a year away and has nothing to do with the topic. I think that's called hijacking. Seriously.
-
I was just trying to keep it civil, M. Obviously you prefer to show off in public. It's time to invoke my Fool Rule (borrowed shamelessly from Mark Twain): Never argue with a fool. He'll only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. Lighten up, M! Out here.

Oh my! Luthier's Little Helper. Self-appointed? How my post was "insulting" is a mystery to me. If you have a gripe, PM me. You don't need to do your Tarzan yodel on the forum.

Okay, thanks, but who is const and how do I contact him?
-
Wow! Thank you Mr. Wizard! Is flapping your jaws constantly (when you admit you don't really know) a sign of intelligence? And who elected you sheriff? This thread isn't a discussion and it rapidly devolved intro a whole parade of folks asking the same question and further devolving into an I want list. I would suggest that is acting impatiently (not acting impatient except, I guess, in New Jersey). All I said was give them some time to work out a response. The whole flyables/rewards system was confusing even back when the Kickstarter was in full swing. It still needs to be clarified but they've said they've heard the message, so let them figure it out and respond.

Great stuff! Thanks for the update! -
+1!

Oh dear. Another "I want" thread. And there's noting to "want" yet. Give them some time to sort it out.
-
Yes. It was HotTom in Rise of Flight and Steel Beasts before that. I had this account as TTTiger (Tony The Tiger) pre-RoF! I haven't figured out how to change my name here. I'm not hiding (on purpose). I just can't figure out how to change my call sign. :joystick: Howya doin', Demon?
