This is brilliant!!! Thank you, Chuck!!!

I have the switches mapped to two stick buttons. If you hold both switches open for 20 seconds (I count it off) before releasing them, the switches will pop back into neutral and stay there until adjusted again, and the intake will stay fully open. That's what I do and overheating is rare if I maintain speed (250mph +). The trick is to remember to put it back into automnatic when the fight is over and the temp drops below normal.

Remember the wind is pushing the tail, not the nose, and the wind is thus forcing the nose into the wind. So, if the wind is blowing from right to left, your nose will want to drift to the right (into the wind). To correct for this, you need to use rudder to steer left (the same direction the wind is going) and stay straight. It's a tough concept to get your head around but once you figure it out, it will quickly become intuitive. Otherwise, follow the instructions in the P-51D manual: Accelerate slowly and hold the stick back for an exaggerated period of time to keep the tail wheel down until you are sure you have good rudder authority. Then let the stick up gradually as you apply rudder in the direction the wind is blowing (not where it's coming from). Hope that helps.

Excellent resource! Thanks, Crumpp!

Got it! Thanks, Sabre...and Happy 2015!

 I had to replace my hard drive and thus re-install DCS. I own several modules and, yes, the DCS web site can supply the serial numbers needed for activation. But (there it is!) I don't know what to open or where to place the serial numbers to reactivate the modules. If someone could give me a simple (For Dummies) step by step on where to look and what to open to re-install, I would be very grateful. Thanks! :helpsmilie:

Section VII -- Operating Instructions for the P-51
HotTom replied to MiloMorai's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Good link! Thanks for sharing it! -
I have a G940 and use no curves. You shouldn't really need them with a force feedback stick. The P-51 takes a gentle hand. How many hours do you have in the P-51? Takes time to build muscle memory.

That's exactly what the manual says to do: Keep the tail on the ground until you have rudder authority and have enough speed to lift off (Page 130) and it works! Amazing, huh? :pilotfly:

Ity seems pretty accurate to me...but I've never flown anything with that much power, so my view is strictly subjective. If you say something isn't modeled correctly (and it may not be) some specifics and data would be helpful.

Many (most) folks may already know this but it is worth repeating, I think: The affect of a cross wind (either landing or taking off) is on the tail of the plane, NOT the nose. Thus, if the wind is blowing from right to left it is going to push the tail to the left and thus the nose will be pushed to the right, INTO the wind. Seems simple but it is counterintuitive and it took a long time of getting the Cessna (back when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth) I learned in straightened out "instinctively." If the wind is coming from the right, the nose will want to drift right (into the wind) so you need to use the rudder to keep the nose to the left. Again, apologies to those who already know this. Also, the portion of the manual on cross wind takeoff and landing gives some very useful tips. This is another one of those things that requires doing it over and over again to get the right "feel." The "Create Fast Mission" function is good because wind increases with the cloud setting. It took me awhile to feel confident in takeoffs and landings with a cross wind but I can do it, anyone can!

The P-38 couldn't handle the low winter temperatures at altitude in the European winter. The AAF went to the P-51 instead and used the P-38 in the Pacific where it could handle the temperatures. The two engines were considered much safer for the long-range over-water patrols in the PTO. I would love to see a DCS P-38 model but only with a Pacific Theater. Historically, it saw only limited and brief ETO service in the 1944 and was rapidly replaced. The P-47 and the Mossie FB VI would be very welcome, however. http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/weapons_P-38_ETO.html

Thank you!!!

Very fair solution. I'm a bit bewildered by all the bellyaching from folks who easily could have ended up with nothing to show for their money at all. ED was under no obligation to pick it up when RRG dropped it. Thank you, ED, for salvaging this project! I will certainly support it as it goes ahead! HT

I'm a bit late to the party...but I'm glad to see ED is taking it over! Better days ahead!

As long as it doesn't interfere with future expansions of the the ETO map (right now, we don't know how far east the first version ETO will extend), by all means go for it, whip, as a third-party proejct! But priority by the developers should go to the ETO.

First: The "WWII era units" are coming so let's stick to WWII. Right now, in DCS World, I leave the tanks alone (because they will use their main guns to fire on you very accurately, which -- as an ex-armor officer -- I seriously question; I've never seen or heard of it done); attack the BMP-1s but not -2s or -3s (same reason: main guns way too accurate) with guns; attack the BRDMs, BTR-80s, missile launchers and, of course, trucks with guns and the SPHs with HVARs (too much armor for guns). There are plenty of ground targets that can be killed with existing P-51D ordnance right now. It's a target-rich environment! Second: Yes, I am aware of the Cavalier but there were only about 20 built and they came along two decades after WWII was over and were used only by a couple of third-world air forces (the term "pissant" comes to mind;)). As I read it. the whole point of "WWII Europe 1944" is to build a quality sim that represents that era accurately. If some third party wants to build a Cavalier and DCS approves it, fine, but let's not detract time and effort away from the WWII P-51D. Keep your eyes on the prize! :smartass:

You are correct. I edited my post. :book:

Need Help with glide slope and final / landing
HotTom replied to woodsglen's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
^What he said! It takes lots and lots of landings until it becomes intuitive. How many do you have in your logbook? -
Ditto. My FPS has dropped with the update.

BTR-80s are easy to kill with your machine guns...I do it every day. But the idea of hanging all kinds of fantasy weapons on an historical simulation just strikes me as wrong in a study sim...let's stick to what modelling really was, huh?

Thanks, Tx! I was wondering. :joystick:

Ask the ATC for an azimuth, fly that azimuth on your compass
