Hi guys, Pretty sure you already plan to do it but just in case it gets through ... The rotor blades should have a negative twist, like let's say at minimum ground flat pitch +8° at the root and -3° at the tip ( random numbers, don't know the actual value ). It's visually important to give a realistic appearance, not like plastic model " flat/straight ' blades. Currently it looks to have the opposed, increasing twist from root to tip. Please also take note of the blade bending motion, both drooping down at rest, and coning up on load. The major part of the bending happens in the first thrid of the blade lenght, not at the tips like it is now ( typical effect of plastic model where heater are used to soften the plastic and the blades bend evenly, while in reality it's not ) Nitpicking a bit for sure but these are little details that while bring it to geometrical perfect accuracy. Good luck ! Hueyman

Flight Model Characteristics - Will I be disappointed?
Hueyman replied to Dangerzone's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
The 8 and 24 are extremely similar, that's a fact. The Mi-24 was designed on the drawing board to fill an empty role and answers the Red Army request for a versatile ground attack AND transport helicopter. It was built using very similar and often the same dynamic components ( rotorheads, transmission, drivetrain, engines... ) than the Mi-8 to save time and costs on development and servicing. For instance, the main rotor is basically the very same but with wider chord blades. You can compare the Mi-8 and Mi-24 with the UH-1 Huey and AH-1 Huey Cobra, they were built around the same heart. Now, don't compare orange and apples, the Hind is not the Gazelle, Kiowa, or even Apache. It's not made to hover at treetop, just hopping up to fire and hide back down. It's made to come low and extrememy fast, anihilate the battlfield, drop troops on that cleared battlefield and go home. As simple as that. Speaking about agility of an airframe is quite vague, of course they all have inherent manoeuvrability ( pitch, roll and yaw rates, inertia etc .. ) which is intimely related to their Take Off Weight. As you said above, flying the Mi-8 with only flying crew and 600 Kg of fuel at -30°C at sea level and the same at 13 tons in hot and high conditions is not the same trip at all. I think anyone who expects the Hind, especially the P variant, to be the terminator of choppers, all capable CAS superpowered invulnerable platform will fall from high and be very disapointed, it will be, like the real deal, very close to the Mi-8 : a fast train, loaded with fuel and ordinance, with complex yet very basic systems. Kind of similar to the Tomcat, legendary in the popular culture but no so impressive on actual use. What will add interest in this one will be to learn how to properly operate it, calulate day performances according to local conditions and mission requirements to stay in the enveloppe, and hopefully soon after release integrate the multicrew aspect. On a sidenote, the Mi-8 module, as old and archaïc it may look, is one true little gem and work of art from the devs. The turbine simulation only is a masterpiece, with correctly simulated regulations, One Engine Inoperative OPS, Doppler, AP34 autopilot, Tail rotor pitch limitere etc.. coding all these mechanical and analog devices must be far from easy. Looking forward to the Hind a lot, and also an update in the Mi-8 graphics, like they're doing with the Ka-50.- 76 replies

Hello PilotMi8, One year after the creation of this thread, I see it still has had some love in terms of features ( multicrew ... ), hope an overhaul is also planned but am sure you are busy with tons of stuff at once ! Good luck for these happy new year and happy new year for all of you !

You're welcome ! Well, that is their signature sound, like the Huey has it's own one Do you think it's disturbing ? Some manufacturers put symetrical followers, ( SA 365 Dauphin for instance ) mainly for balancing purposes, but this may have reduced the " noise " on this one, thus adding weight, costs and maintenance...

This part, also known as just " follower " or " swashplate follower " is an angle compass that mechanically links the rotating swashplate and the rotorhead. The torque is consequent in this area and by design, the movement/torque transmission shouldn't even be tried to be transmitted via the pitch links, which are designed just for that : actuate individual blade pitch, and not drive the swahsplate. From a cinematic point of view : - The Main Gear Box houses the rotor mast - The rotor mast is bolted onto the rotor hub ( yoke ) - The swash follower is bolted onto the mast ( top ) and the rotating swashplate ( bottom ) - The pitch links are bolted between the pitch horns and the rotating swashplate ( so they do not need to withstand the radial torque that would be here without the help of the swash follower ) So the rotor mast, pitch horns and rotating swashplate are a solidary mechanical assembly, in terms of circular motion, while allowing every sub-assemblies ( pitch links, lead lag, flapping axis etc .. ) to freely rotate around their respective axis while having a solid and precise driving of these for the intended purposes. And in the Mil Helicopters, this follower creates a small air turbulence over the other rotating parts of the hub that makes that whistling sound, hence the " once per revolution " Hope that helps.

What's wrong with the Jug, why so little interest ?
Hueyman replied to Hueyman's topic in DCS: P-47 Thunderbolt
I mean.. I was hoping to see emergence of dedicated online squads ! Watch this entirely and tell me you’re not about to dream being one of these Flights where power comes from strategy, training and discipline ! -
Or maybe I’ll have to repair that module, will it delete all joystick and keyboard assignment as well as records, logs and campaigns etc ? Just want to restore vanilla files for rotor texture
-
Hello ! I’d like to get back to default rotor textures ( blurred ) and start from there, could please someone upload the file here or via PM ? Many thanks

Irak and Afghanistan ? Isn't having Persian Gulf and Syria enough already ? I mean, until we have the whole world, having versatile maps would be great ( Europe, Asia, Africa ... ). I feel like PG/Syria and Channel/Normandy are quite close to each over

Oh come on ! Give me a single reason why this popular theatre is not in development yet ?!

Mimino : The real DCS Civil Heli Movie ?
Hueyman replied to Hueyman's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
Thanks, glad you like it ;) If you're interested in more of that, take your time to browse that YouTube channel, many Soviet classics remastered with original recording quality and a full set of international subtitles.. Looking for my next one for tonight ;-P -
In my passion for Russian/Soviet world, I discovered a pearl : Мимино The story of a Georgian helicopter ( Mil Mi-2 ) pilot and it's stories, in good old Caucasus... I'm sure it may please some of you, who are more into delicate heli flying in the mountains than flying at Mach 2 at FL 450 ! I really enjoyed the tone and atmosphere of this movie, very good quality also.

DCS Mi-8 is 7 years now, time for an update ?
Hueyman replied to Hueyman's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
It's a very complete and realistic module indeed. Quite confusing but the Mi-17 is basically the very same Mi-8, but export version. Only Russian operated A/C are designated Mi-8. The full designation philosophy is quite complex, but saying Mi-17 is an upgraded Mi-8 with tail rotor on the other side is a big simplification. Some Mi-8s ( MTV-5 for instance ) are more performant and younger than older Mi-17-1V. I agree that this module would only need a 3D/4K/PBR overhaul, maybe a bit regarding the sounds ( the whisling sound of the swashplate driver "scissor" is louder IRL ) but overall a true masterpiece. Still it is quite limited for serious IFR operations, a VOR/ILS/CDI and a DME would be more than welcome.. but it wouldn't be an Mi-8 MTV2 anymore but civilian MTV1 retrofited with " modern " avionics ( like all current civilian ones around .. ) -

It's really one of the most detailed and in-depth system simulation ever made around, really under rated .. I believe I saw somewhere they have a slightly different version directly used for FTD Level 3 Mi-8/17 simulators for real crews Type Rating .. It looks very advanced and feature complete system wise, maybe only a cosmetic overhaul, to be on par with incoming Mil Mi-24 ( looking STELLAR ) would be welcommed ! I'd be ready to financially support this, like Black Shark 2,3 .. and A-10 II .. -

[DOUBLE POST, PLEASE DELETE THIS THREAD ] -
It's an awesome module as we're already used to with Eagle Dynamics, but it's also an awesome aircraft with rich history ! I am really surprised in the negative way to see so little interest in it so far .. - There are not many liveries ( though not sure if the paintkit was released ) - No quick/instant missions in Syria - Still waiting for rocket implementation and correct bomb damage blast - No serious campaing that I'm aware of are in the process of being made using Normandy or The Channel - Very little use online - Was expecting to see a ton of virtual squadrons rising up, with ground attack role, formation flying etc.. nothing. Proposed multiple times over groups, no one was interested so far. Is there a reason for that ? I know they are hard birds to fly compared to the jet toys but on the long run, I'm afraid most development power will be moer and more dedicated to the jets, in the disadvantage of the helicopters and WWII birds ( like in the civilian sims where the Liners makes most of the $$ ) Anyway, share your thoughts on that
