They're not going to replace the A-10 with anything, nevermind the F-35. The USAF has always had an uneasy relationship with the dedicated CAS mission, going all the way back to the earliest days of SAC. The A-10 fills a niche, quite elegantly. It is however an unwanted niche so it will go gently into that good night to make room for acquiring and maintaining the REAL strategic assets that'll win that ever elusive hot war that never quite seems to materialize. I imagine in 10 or 15 years or so whenever there's another ground war there'll be talk of how it was unfortunate that CAS couldn't stay on station long enough or carry enough ordnance, or something. Of course we could be wrong. My friend insisted when we had this conversation that in the future CAS will be handled by swarms of cheap plentiful armed drones. Is it really just stubbornness in us that makes us insist this bird still deserves to fly? Maybe... bah who am I kidding. Screw the JSF.

Shein's X-55 Rhino A-10C Profile
PFunk1606688187 replied to Shein's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
Its a shame to hear that. It seems that Saitek production standards are no different than they've always been, though maybe we can cut them a little slack since this is the first production run. From what I've read Thrustmaster had issues with the grease they used on the Warthog stick that have finally been sorted in latter production runs. I guess this means I shouldn't bother asking you if the nipple is any more precise than the X52's for pure mouse input. -
Shein's X-55 Rhino A-10C Profile
PFunk1606688187 replied to Shein's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
If I understand what I'm looking at, he's created luas that you load to replace your current control setup with the one he's created, yes? You just go into controls and load the relevant lua to set the controls in DCS for the given device? If this is the case it should just be a matter of either editing the lua file with Notepad++ or simply directly editing the controls the old fashioned way in the DCS control menu. I'm just gonna say that I don't have an X55, I use an X52, but I use DCS controls and a limited Saitek profile to do much of the same as this profile. Unless he's using some fancy lua editing to make the controls do something special you should be able to easily rebind things at will in the controls menu. @Shein With respect to the mouse nipple and slewing, how have you set up the pr0? In my X52 I have set my nipple to use bands for the 4 different axes replicating keystrokes that correspond to whichever command I'm using (I don't use it to slew). From what I've read of the new software from Saitek for the X55, all the functions of using bands should be present and therefore function identically. I just set bands of a given direction to only cue a keystroke in the 80-100% range and the 0-20% range and that does the trick. For my own curiosity I am interested to know how Saitek is modeling its software for the future if and when the X52 might get upgraded to be compatible with it. -
Well 1.2.7 patch notes does include this reference: No idea what that means. No idea what kind of effectiveness, given the previous "effectiveness" was mostly ineffective and unrealistic. Damned patch notes. Why u cryptic.

I'd love to see a more analytical breakdown of the new features. If it can actually alter the SAM's launch window behavior I'd be very pleased.

131 is apparently "modular", the 184 isn't. 184 has a better drag profile as well apparently. That's all my cursory Internet search showed me. Jammers however don't work in DCS. I don't even know if the two items have different drag indices in game.

Laste wind data and dynamic weather
PFunk1606688187 replied to nickexists's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Its all fiction. I went down this rabbit hole a long time ago. The wind page doesn't do shit for you. A more productive use of your time would be to learn the bombing triangle and the essentials of how to correctly deliver weapons via CCIP. There are a few long threads about this. -
Or in the case of the A-10C where the flap switch is an actual 3 way toggle it would work perfectly. So many cool ways you could use 3 way toggle switches. The one 3 way switch on my X52 is used to great effect.

I always thought that in real life there is no announcement and that pilots are just supposed to deal with it. I could be wrong.

So you're saying that its a deliberate inaccuracy on ED's part?

I bought A-10C on steam back in the pre-World days and my friend bought me BS2 as an upgrade to 1. From what I've read so far I'm SOL. :(

What was your learning process for this aircraft?
PFunk1606688187 replied to Pajeezy's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Learn to fly. Don't just click autopilot and stare through the Targeting Pod the whole time. The HUD is not a primary flight instrument. That means you should be referencing those steam gauges on the forward console as often as you're looking at the HUD. Don't just be a slave to the Green stuff. The TVV can and will fail under battle damage so be able to fly the airplane the old fashioned way. Get a good control configuration. Try to mimic the HOTAS configuration as best as you can with your current hardware. Do your best to memorize the functions on pages 88-92 of the manual. These are your main controls for the aircraft. You should be able to do the vast majority of your flying without letting go of those controls while interacting with the systems. HOTAS is a beautiful concept so don't forget to make it work for your configuration. I'd say its an essential to write out or print those controls on 88-92. When I taught myself the A-10C I wrote out and printed a lot of reference material. That sheet is the only thing I still reference whatsoever, and regularly. Collate the various tables into a single one that should fit onto one side of a single sheet, keep it by your side. You should come to understand the concepts of SPI and SOI. Those directly affect how you interact with every combat and sensor system. Don't think its just about the Targeting Pod. People get obsessed with that thing and think its the only way to gather data and view the enemy. The A-10C is still very much a visual aircraft, you should map an FOV function to your stick or throttle so you can zoom in regularly to look for targets below you and coordinate what your eyes see with what your sensors see. Its hard to recommend a specific learning path because different people learn different ways. I sat down and digested the manual twice over before actually really flying. Others prefer to get into the pit and break things until they get a rhythm going. ^^^lesnyborsuk has a good one I think. If you set yourself limited goals it focuses your learning. Staying interested is always a great way to learn. -

I somehow ended up on the Vietnamese part of Youtube... What a trip man.... -
The GAU in DCS does appear to have incorrect round dispersion though. This reduces the lethality of a given burst regardless of the strafe angle or firing range. This of course has nothing to do with the lethality of individual rounds which do their job quite well when on target, if you know how to use them.

Damn this is fun. I don't suppose anyone knows how I can rip the files open so I can photoshop some english tags onto most of the switches, eh?

Operation Bactria (MP COOP 14), Afghanistan CAS
PFunk1606688187 replied to Habu23's topic in User Created Missions General
Yea I tried it again being very careful and this time it worked fine with an AI wingman. I'll post if anything else anomalous happens. Always appreciate your work on this one. I wish there were more missions like this around. -
GBU-38's inaccurate or is it me?
PFunk1606688187 replied to MikeRowe545mm's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I thought that I read they improved some of the blast effect of rockets to make up for the lack of fragmentation. -
As far as I can tell it works great. How complicated is it to set such a thing up from scratch?
-
Doesn't this still mean that you can't control when he's on the fast and the slow track, or is there some command to remotely send him into the correct orbit?
-
I really hope you'd be able to fly modern equipment in the WW2 environment. The years of being stuck in Georgia mean that having a new theatre and not being able to explore it in whatever I wanted would just be... unfair. It would also mean that some servers could become absurd combinations of old and new, but I think that part of the joy of sandbox gaming/simming is the freedom to imagine it how you please.

Operation Bactria (MP COOP 14), Afghanistan CAS
PFunk1606688187 replied to Habu23's topic in User Created Missions General
I just tried to do a single player version of Boar flight with a single AI wingman. I got to the IP and received no call from Chalice, was unable to communicate with any JTAC. I haven't tried any other flights yet. Are there any things in particular which must be done? Can anyone confirm that the scripting is still working in 1.2.7? PS, I did resave the mission file so don't bother asking me that. -
^ Agreed. Sometimes I wonder why people who go full bore into hardcore simulation have such a hard time dealing with an absence of information. To me thats one of the best parts of it.

Now thats a way better picture than mine. :P
