  1. Yes this is one of the few surviving P-51Cs .. It's markings are not completely historic (the red tail of course and and the 302nd nose marking are.. but the A was used with the 99th.. ) however it was put together by the CAF (Commemorative Air Force) and I believe it was actually flown by Andrew "Jug" Turner of the 100th.. He flew Skipper's Darlin .... I don't know if that is Skipper's Darlin or not because Turner flew several aircraft with the 332nd. Tragically this aircraft was just recently rebuilt and was flown again in '09 after a crash in '04 which killed the pilot Don Hinz. I think the story goes that Don Hinz was instrumental in the birth of the Tuskegee project. Hinz took over the project at some point in the 90s I thin it was.. When the plane was acquired by the CAF at first no one knew where it came from but when he came on board Hinz did some research on the serial and when he found the plane's origins he pushed to start what became known as the Tuskegee project. He literally put his life into that project and died flying the plane.
  2. Wow.. I had no idea.. I was wondering what the animations did because all mine did was lower the tailwheel.. So does this mean that now I can load my skins from the liveries folder directly ..? I am assuming you mean your main DCS folder yes?
  3. Absolutely.. I have a great deal of respect for all of them.. even the "enemy" pilots.. Imagine you are flying around in a metal box with wings.. and pulling Gs .. and fighting for you rlife.. I have had roller coasters give me a small tiny glimpse of what it must be like.. and I just have to go wow..
  4. Lee Archer was the only "official" Ace to come out of the 332nd.. and actually .. By ReQuest was a P-51C .. it was rare in that it had the same tail filet that the Ds had..Most P-51Bs & Cs did not have that filet. It added stability to the AC. it was the personal aircraft flown by Col. Benjamin O. Davis and it bore the markings of the 301st F.S. 332nd F.G. The aircraft was designated as 66 because that was just how the numbers fell. It was a coincidence that that was also the same number of pilots killed in the line of duty. It was not etched in stone because a lot of times aircraft would go from one squadron to another within the F.G. and retain it's number while the markings would change to reflect the squadron but generally the numbers 50-69 I believe were set for the 301st.. The 302nd designatons were usually in the 70-80 range hence Archer, Pruitt, Gleed, and McGee among others .. all flew AC designated in the 70s. By ReQuest was destroyed in a crash at Ramitelli Airbase in 1945 while Col. Davis was home on leave. I never heard that the Germans called them red devils.. Perhaps redtailed devils.. but i do know that they called them "Schwartze Volgelmenschen" (Black Birdmen) .. and they came to fear and respect them as opponents. For more information on The Tuskegee Airmen there is a reading list on the History page of our squadron's site that is linked in my sig.
  5. Yup that's exactly what I mean.. Thanks Rudel..
  6. OK I'll have to try a different approach.. I am trying to achieve this level of reflectivity in the sim.. but what I get is this .. Which is not bad.. but I am trying to get that high gloss and I am wondering why it shows up in the viewer and not the sim.. also What are those black spots.. In the viewer (Great tool BTW .. is that a mod or was it released by Eagle Dynaics... I know is says ed viewer but that doesn't necessarily mean it was released by ed) When I took out the serial number files it was even worse.. I put them back in thinking that the black squares would go away but they didn't..
  7. OUTSTANDING!!! LMAO .. I was just working on trying to make one of my own..
  8. I am still having some stick issues.. but a lot of my guys are getting set to move over here as the 99th.. Don't be surprised if I pop on your TS server at some point this weekend to say hi.. Flying right is kind of problematic for me right now as I use a MSFFB2 as my main stick and the FFB is bent in here at the moment.. :joystick: My XO is in the same boat..
  9. Thanks guys that is exactly what I was looking for..
  10. Seriously.. guys..
  11. How do I change the pilot skin? I see therer are at least two pilot skins in here.. more if you count the cadaver skin.. How can I change the one I see in the cockpit exterior and will that also change the one I see when I look in the mirror.. If I change my default skin will that also change the pilot skin for the AI as well?
  12. Anybody.... Bueler? Beuuulleerr?
  13. What about it.. any musicians in here? I play bass.. mostly at my church now.. I have 5 basses.. 3 electric 5s and a 4 .. my old faithful 77 Jazz that I bought new in 77 at Alex Axe on 47th St for $437 .. I sitll have the receipt.. and an acoustic Kelly Dragonfly. I don't play the 77 Jazz much anymore because I prefer the 5s. I use a Benz SL900 through a AG Tri115.. I have an Avatar B212 that I leave at the church.. I have a Schecter Studio Stilletto 5, an Ibanez 505 and a Fender J24V which is the main bass I play.. I like a lot of Israel.... and we play a lot of the contemporary christian/gospel music out today.. but I have recently revisited some of the music I grew up with as ar as playing it .. which makes me appreciate it even more.
  14. :megalol::thumbup::smartass:
  15. Bearcat here. I just saw this thread so I figured I'd hit it... been posting for a few weeks .. been simming for a while.. just not here.. It took a Mustang to get mer over here...:pilotfly:
  16. There are several.. We were in IL2 for the past 10 years as the 99th and before that in CFS ..... See the link in my sig to our site.. We are in a state of flux right now.. but we are heading this way..Gotta be the Mustangs ...... Ya think? :pilotfly::thumbup:
  17. Test pilot Dave Southwood talks flying vintage warbirds.. The Mustang is in Part I @ 5:40. Good stuff! Thanks to Hackl @ SHQ. Part I Part II Part III Part IV Part V Part VI Very interesting..
  18. No.. I have it .. but yoyu know somewthing weird.. I could never get my MSFFB2 to work right in FSX.. or CFS3 for that matter.. Whic to me was crazy because it's a MS stick.. even f it is discontinued.. in CFS3 it would bend hard to the corner as soon as I touchedit and stay there.. I could never get it centered.. I tried forums.. wrote to MS .. they said "We don't support that product anymore.." I knew folks who had them and they worked fine but for some reason mine never worked .. and because I had IL2 it was not a major issue for me.. If I can't get it right in DCS I'd consider getting another stick though.. but I think they will work out any of the bugs the right way.. I have a hard time with that mottled FS scenery look anyway.. that's why and ...
  19. I also get these black squares on the fuselage and tail.. Not sure what that's about.. The skin looks absolutely great in the viewer but when I load it up it looses a lot of it's reflectivity.. In the viewer it looks like this.. Kermit Weeks' Ina the Macon Belle but not in the sim.. It does reflect .. but not to the same degree ... I'll keep fidling..
  20. I was always curious as to why having differing amounts of fuel in ech wng wouldn't cause a stability problem.. but I guess it did.. I imagine they were constantly switching back and forth to keep thing balanced and trying to malke sure they got tat fuselage tank under 40G well before hitting the combat zone..
  21. I am running a Fx-60 with 4G or DDR 400 ram on a GTX 260 on XP-64... Not a very new rig at all .. I am running on low settings but I haven't choked yet although I have only a few hours of stick time so far and that with not a lot of stuff going on. I am getting 20-28 fps on average... My birthday present to myself will be an upgrade in a few months. :)
  22. I'd expect some differences because of lighting but I just redid my skin and in the viewer it was almost mirror like but less so in the sim just curious as to why that might be.
  23. Thanks ... I knew the center tank would cause a stability problem if full that was why I asked the question... I didn't know about the relief valve though ....
  24. On page 122 it states to set the fuel selector valve to the Main Tank L.H. ... Why not the center tank? Just curious.. Yesterday and today were the first chances I had to really sit down and read this thing and start getting into it.. I'll be tearing my PC down soon for the move in 2 weeks but I wanted to get a leg in there.. so far I have just gotten a toe in and I'm lovin it... I'm saying to myself.. I am wowed by the little I have seen I may be in trouble once I move and get settled in and actually have some time to really get into this..
  25. There were a lot of guys who felt that way back in the war as well..
