How to detect and counter an incoming IR SAM?
JayPee replied to Hoggorm's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
If we were to find out how to mod the SEMI/AUTO modes to select a programme based on the highest threat, that would already be less workload for the DCS pilot because then you would basically never have to manually switch programmes except for pre-empts etc. But at least you're not busy browsing programmes when the heat is on. -

How to detect and counter an incoming IR SAM? IRL, at least for the F-16 which used the AN/ALE-40/uses the AN/ALE-47 as well, both SEMI and AUTO require you to manually consent to the start of an ECM programme and chaff/flare release sequence. The main difference is that in SEMI the ECM prog will continue untill the threat is gone while the selected release sequence will only be activated once. In AUTO the release sequence will be repeated untill the threat is gone. Also from an AL/ALE-47 (-40's successor) 'brochure' I've read that it only offers the pilot a choice of 5 programmes to select via the CMMS knob on the stick. This works by appointing programmes to one of 5 slots via the CMSP. Next to this it does more thinking for the pilot than modeled in DCS. For instance if an SA-13 is onto you it would suggest and select an anti RADAR sequence (regardless whether bound to one of the 5 slots) up untill the point where the IR missile is in a range in which it can be spoofed best, at which point an anti IR sequence is selected. Again, I've got this information from publically available sales material and from F-16.net so it is possible to be different though I would assume not entirely different. -

Yes that is correct. In SEMI you are in charge of programme selection except when a theeat is detected for which a corresponding programme exists according to the ED logic. I am not sure what happens when you switch to another programme if SEMI has selected one and if the threat is still, well... a threat to you. Perhaps it immediately switches back to its own choice, perhaps it will only auto select once per threat and allow you to switch after that. You'd have to test that for yourself. AUTO is actually a no-go with these programmes given the numbers dumped and intervals. -

Regarding CMS programmes, take a look at the attachment. Colum A in the third tab is properly formatted and ready to copy paste into your params.lua. It contains cell references so whatever you change in the first tab, will be automatically updated. To have the quickest response to threats, set to SEMI and browse to programme C to set it as your current one. C is basically your OH SHIT!-programme if things start to beep and flash when the system itself hasn't determined what the threat is. If any of the automatically detectable threats are encountered, an appropriate (A, B, L, or M) programme will be selected anyway in SEMI/AUTO. As soon as the heat is off you should switch back to C to have it stand-by again for when needed. Same goes for the 2 pre-empts and the 6 egress one-shots. Should you use them, be sure to switch back to C for emergencies. Small note, I've heard people assuming that in SEMI/AUTO you have no control over programme selection, only over consent to release. This is not true, at least in SEMI (check AUTO for yourself if you like) you can select whatever programme you want, it is just that it will auto select programme A, B, L, or M if the corresponding threats are encountered. When digging through the cockpit script files I admit you will not find a reason to believe the system will automatically select M upon incoming IR. It only mentions auto selection of A, B, and L for specified RADAR threats. However, testing proves it does auto select M so it has to be hardcoded somewhere else. Also take note that the manual and other documentation might imply that the system "automatically selects a programme to match the current threat". This is only partly true. It is true in that it selects a preset programme for a certain threat as stated in tab 1 column C. It is not true in that whenever you switch the content of programme A and M for instance, it'll still auto select A upon encountering an SA-6 and subsequently will punch out flares, which is definitely not auto selecting a programme to match the current threat. I've come to these programme configurations and conclusions with the help of others and by stepwise testing in-game. One last thing, if you want to change programmes yourself, be sure to explicitly type a period (.) as a seperator if your location settings are set to use a comma (,). The latter is probably the case in Western-Europe minus UK. -

I'll see if I can get some Tacviews. Would be great if you (or others) could shed some light on it. -
I'll respond tomorrow as I'm on my phone right now though I'd like to point out I did not say 18C production hasn't started. That must have been somebody else. My point was lack of insight in development/updates.

I fully understand and agree with all 3 of you. HOWEVER, ED sure isn't blind either. If, as a company, you notice your market is becoming increasingly impatient andas a result perhaps even losing trust, how big an effort would it be to give them some tangible updates on a reasonably frequent base? All we're basically getting right now is: don't expect anything in the near future. Well, not put so bluntly but still. Also look at this topic. I admit it includes some rant yet officials don't even remotely feel the need to somehow respond, either in a thread like this or via a news update. Lotsa fanboys around are saying we should show some empathy towards ED for the difficulties they face. Tell you this, I for one am definitely not feeling any empathy from ED towards its customers right now. Hopefully ventilating my opinion once in a while is tolerated and not punished by half a flame war.

DCS World or Helicopter World You know a bitching crowd, partly due to lack of insight into current projects/development?
-
That's basically another Su-25. Only slightly slower and less agile.

DCS World or Helicopter World As funny as your comment is, feel free to share your knowledge should you know more than meets the eye...

Steam. Why use it anyway?

I cannot help but wonder why people persistently keep using that hopeless platform... For modding and compatibility with community updates alone you should make use of the original installation source.

Eddie, bear with me please and see if you can spot my error.. I'm trying to do an 82 20LD2 by the book. Well, actually a 82 20LD1 to save ordnance for some more runs but I'm following the -2 sled. I roll in at slightly less than 4000 AGL. By the time I roll out I'm at 2500 AGL but I'm at 15 nose down instead of 20 and I still have to pull up a bit to get the DRC on target. This is probably my first error. As of now I'm about to get the cross in my pipper as the MRC is exceeded and both the pipper and MRS are comming together at my target. Eventually I deliver at 1500 AGL and 9 out of 10 times I manage to blow up a small bunker with a single 82. Although I'm obviously doing something wrong. What is happening here? Why do I get a cross in my pipper and why do I exceed past the MRC/MRS? My delivering ALT of 1500 is far above the MIN ALT of 800. DTOF set to 6.6 as per sled. -

Yes, I get that. So let me explain my comment in detail: when will it be released since it is ready and where can I download? -

Good question. I've wondered about "HOT" as well but so far haven't looked into it because I need to get some basics down first. -

Where?:) -
DCS World or Helicopter World Same here, definitely. Though taking it up against an AI F-18E in a Mig-21 because hifi modeling of modern ACFT is impossible due to classified information seems weird, if not difficult to survive.

Quick question on landing speed MTF, please do so. WBK, what do you mean you jettison your racks? I assume under normal operating procedures you don't just dump empty TERs/LAUs for the sake of coming in light?
-
Yes. Oh man, just copy the damn thing already, it's not going to bite :D
-
Quick question on landing speed What I've been struggling with so far is that pitch should be constant while the throttle is to move the FPM when it's either short or long of the treshold. This principle in itself isn't a problem but anticipating the lag between throttle movement and FPM movement is. When I do it by the book -keeping pitch constant- I find myself chasing the FPM back and forth.

DCS World or Helicopter World Why should a general discussion on the content and strategy of the entire DCS World platform be dumped and disregarded in the rather unimportant Chit Chat section? I better hope it's not because of a few remarks where ED dropped the ball and could have done better... Furthermore I do agree with the general opinion that DCSW offers two hi-fi attack platforms of significance (10C & 50) whereas other units might create the impression they were introduced, ported from FC3, or given an AFM for the sake of filling the timeline and the newness hungry customers, without actually serving a relevant purpose. Don't get me wrong, the contribution of 3rd parties is great but in the end ED's responsible for what makes it into DCSW and what doesn't. I'm not an arse licking fanboy nor am I a hater. I think ED did a pretty good job bringing the 50 and 10C to the public as AFAIK no other party has ever done that to the DCS extent before. But common, rereleasing an almost 10 year old game for "compatibility with DCSW"; 'releasing' advanced flightmodels for that game; 'releasing' two seperate ACFT from that game for DCSW owners.. Really?! There's only so much milk you can get from a cow. To conclude, I think we've had our fair share of fun, with helos/side role ACFT and upgrades/updates, it's time for a new fully modeled platform in line with the -10C modeling. Preferably home made by ED if that is vital to fidelity as they have clearly shown their abilities in the past.

Does the donut account for weight and drag? E.g. when I'm coming in heavy, will having the donut only lit fly me at a higher speed than when coming in light? EDIT: Wait.. Yes, ofcourse it will. As the donut indicates the AOA and the AOA is dependent on weight/speed.

Basically putting the FPM on -2,5 and keeping it on the treshold always gets you home. Even in low light level or at night as eventually you will always see the rwy lights. I just want to improve my procedures a bit when I have the spare time to practice.
