The HSI waypoint/TACAN distance to start your descent was there in the previous Open Beta build.
Waypoint HSI Info circled in red is
• Bearing to / Distance to
• Time to go to
• Fuel Remaining (once reached)
• Distance from waypoint to start descent
However rather than showing the distance from the waypoint to start your descent (for a particular altitude), it counted down to zero prior to the descent point i.e. it would read 0 nm @ 32,000 ft when 35 nm from the waypoint.
The distance it gave also seemed incorrect - it may have been giving a descent profile for other than 0 ft AGL or perhaps it was (incorrectly ?) using a steeper 'single engine' profile.
Throttle idle descent (250KCAS/M0.85) from 30,000ft worked best from ~50 nm but I didn't investigate/test sufficiently to make a bug report, as FPAS looks like WIP.
Note: I'm not sure how it's supposed to work IRL (need to reread the manual a bit more) but would have expected the descent distance to depend on weight, altitude and drag index*, so if I overflew an an airfield at 30,000 ft and started to descend (on an outbound leg), I'd know when to turn back to land.

well, i apologize...i know iCls stands for carrier, in fact with the carrier i have no problems.....i did not see ils bars when landing on an airfield.
so the C in the title was nothing more than an unwanted mistake...but i still did not see loc and glide for "normal landings"
ICLS uses higher radio frequencies and a narrower beam width than "normal" ILS.
The AN/SPN-41A Instrument Carrier Landing System is a pulse coded scanning beam (PCSB) emitter that transmits elevation and azimuth guidance signals to appropriately equipped Navy and Marine Corps aircraft. The AN/SPN-41A radiates two coded microwave beams into the approach volume behind the ship.
The signal coverage from each beam is approximately 20-degrees to either side of centerline and 0 to 10-degrees above the horizon for a range of 50 miles
It is not compatible with ILS as found at Batumi, Kobuleti, etc. so you won't get localiser or glide slope indications.
In your first post you say
....don't see any loc and glide on hud............freq is correctAFAIK the Hornet's AN/ARA-63 (ICLS) Channel 1 isn't adjustable in DCS but if it was, it couldn't be set to to cover a civilian ILS frequency if modelled realistically.
Hence why you'd use a non-precision TACAN approach in DCS and in RL (unless the airfield was equipped with a AN/TPN-22 radar or similar).

It's normal, AFAIK it's supposed to work like a poor man's FLIR

Since we are at it guys, do you know if those training campaigns are still working in the 2.5 world?
Yes, as paid DLC, they are maintained and updated in step with DCS by Sabre-TLA
They are not 'teaching' campaigns, but pilot evaluation flights based off USAF Aircrew Evaluation Criteria and real 'check' rides.
They are a series of tasks that must be performed to a set 'standard' i.e.
• Altitude +/- 200 feet
• Airspeed +/- 5%
• Course +/- 5 degrees/3 NM (whichever is greater)
Although you can learn from the missions, they are really there to check if you are skillful enough to pass the 'real' tests after becoming competent in DCS.
It's best to have:
• read the DCS A-10C manual
• completed the default DCS training missions
• flown a few combat missions
to get the most benefit from the A-10C 'Qualification' campaigns.

No, please post a dcs.log file ("Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.log") from when the crash occurs and say which mission you try to run.
Ensure you've disabled any mods including any added to "Save Games\DCS" or rename "Save Games\DCS" and let DCS build a new "Save Games\DCS" folder for testing purposes.
Run a DCS 'repair' and/or validate the local files if using Steam.

... so any tips for these turns?
Practice, using Jabber's Case I Carrier Recovery Tutorial as a guide
with Bankler's CASE 1 Recovery Training mission
https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3641751&postcount=1
and perhaps using this RL case 1 landing for cadence/rhythm

I downloaded the F15 module but when I run DCS it disables it. The missions are on the hard drive but I see no way to access them using FC3 F15C. Can I copy those missions to the FC3 mission folder?
You risk breaking DCS's MP integrity check.
IMHO it'd be better to copy the missions to a folder under "Saved Games\DCS\Missions" i.e. "Saved Games\DCS\Missions\F-15C" or "Saved Games\DCS\Missions\FC3".
You then navigate in DCS using 'Mission>My Missions' to your chosen folder/mission.
Note: User campaigns go in folders under "Saved Games\DCS\Missions\Campaigns\en" and are accessed using 'Campaign>My Campaigns'

Check the patch notes people, seems like RAZBAM listened. :)
Note: "KC130.lua" wasn't updated in patch 2.5.3.24436, so it looks like the fuel fix didn't get pushed to Open Beta
-
To install, do you just drop the entire folder in the mission folder in saved games or do you do something else with all the files and folders?
I'm not really sure what you mean ?
There is one file, the mission file from the 1st post, "Bankler's Case 1 Recovery Trainer_v02-01.miz"
You place the mission file under "Saved Games\DCS\Missions" and then navigate to the file in DCS using "Mission>My Missions"
The mission doesn't require installing external script or audio files as they (Moose, TrapTraining.lua, etc) get included in the .miz file.
It's designed to give single players, similar feedback to a MP LSO, here's my first attempt with v2.1.0 (needless to say it was a bolter).

How do we designate a normal waypoint as Target?
The EHSD 'DESG' button (bottom LH side MPCD) designates the selected waypoint as a target location (diamond on the EGSD) and the DMT camera will slew to it when it's in it's field view.
Note: you can step to another waypoint after target designation e.g. waypoint 3 = ingress and waypoint 4 = target diamond on the EHSD.

I was just having fun interacting with FAC-A. I have a quick question: How is the lasing time limit modelled in DCS?
IIRC in DCS 1.5, JTAC lasers had a similar time out to smoke markers, so timed out after 5 minutes if the target hadn't been destroyed i.e. if I took longer than 5 min to destroy a target because my first GBU missed, I needed to call for a 2nd lase.
I haven't tested in 2.5.x as with the Harrier and Hornet's spot tracking, getting LMAV's and GBU's on target hasn't been an issue.
YMMV

If I were to purchase the F-15 and A-10 as standalone airframes would they have the Quick Start, Training, and Free Flight content I'm looking for?
No.
DCS 1.2.16 includes old FC2 missions for the F-15C, etc. but the legacy missions were depreciated and removed from DCS 1.5.6 and 2.5.x
The legacy FC2 missions are available here but most likely require editing due to changes in the FC3 flight models and the DCS 2.5.x map.

Did I have an issue with the Open Beta download?
The current DCS Open Beta version is 2.5.3.23954, is that the version number you see in the DCS GUI ?

Good to know this is not right... I'd very much prefer to be able to setup my dispenser programs while in the startup procedure. Enough time there to do so.
AFAIK the problem has been acknowledged and will be rectified
Logic, or you can take my word for it, which is based off 500+ hours in the F/A-18 (not simulated)• Dispenser switch ON (not BYPASS), weight on wheels: should be able to box PB8 ‘ALE47’ on the EW page, setup the programs etc. Nil expendables will be dispensed.
• Dispenser switch ON, weight off wheels: box ALE47, with PB19 ‘MODE’ in STBY (displayed under PB8 ), nil expendables will be dispensed with HOTAS/Sill switch actuation.
• Dispenser switch ON, weight off wheels, cycle PB19 until ‘MAN1’ displayed under PB19: flares and/or chaff dispensed IAW the program setup and HOTAS/Sill switch selection, regardless of master arm position.
The above is accurate for the real jet. I’m away and unable to check the DCS jet atm, but I wouldn’t bother contacting Boeing.
Thank you, sir! Your help is highly appreciated! -
After a maverick is locked and launched, do you have to keep the plane continuing to the target or can you make a turn and go back to the IP while the mav continues on to the target?
As the JTAC is providing the lase, you can break off and return to the IP to setup for the next attack.
Don't call 'OFF' to the JTAC though, as he'll take it to mean you've stopped your initial attack and will stop lasing, even though there's a LMAV still in the air.

I think I'd like my next module to be a bit more ground attack focused ...After all the feedback, I'm leaning toward the Mirage, but we'll see how the holiday sales stack up. :)
One thing to be aware of is that the Mirage is very limited in it's A/G capability.
It works best as a low level strike aircraft, dropping snake-eyes in a one pass, haul ass type attacks or as an fox 1/2 interceptor (it has a much more capable radar than the F-5E). While it's possible to drop Mk-82 and LGB's using CCRP, it can be quite limited and frustrating to use.
Due to the slow speed of the A-10C/Su-25T, I'd probably choose between the Harrier or Hornet for A/G.
Incidentally, if you would recommend one map to get would you get the Gulf map or Nevada? The Gulf Map - though I have flown a couple of Nevada/Red Flag scenarios, it's much more satisfying to fly at altitude over the gulf.

TL;DR - Is the F-15C a good noob friendly first module to get my feet wet? Looking for something with an air superiority role
I'm going to differ from the majority opinion - when I tried the F-15C as a standalone module, I found it was missing the basic training I'd come to expect from my experience with the Su-25T, so was disappointed.
DCS 1.2.16 included depreciated F-15C FC2 missions that could be made serviceable by adjusting loadouts, etc. to compensate for changes in the FM, etc. - unfortunately they are no longer included in 1.5.6/2.5.x
So IIRC, you get 2 Instant Action, 2 SP Missions and the F-15C Bear Trap Campaign with the standalone F-15C module.
IMHO the foundations for flying the F-15C are found in the Su-27's training missions, etc. so it's best to buy FC3, learn the Su-27 and then move onto the F-15C.
Note:
If regardless, you decide to buy the F-15C, I'd recommend feefifofum's "Eye for an Eye" SP/Coop missions as a good introduction (AFAIK the 1.5 version still works in 2.5).
You'd still need to pickup the F-15C's basics (radar, etc.) via youtube, etc. but it might be all you need to practice what you learn.

exactly, i see as left picture, mav is crossed....seems it does not see laser tracking from jtac........
The JTAC sequence for the Quick Start training mission "Caucasus FA-18C AGM-65E Maverick Practice" is:
(Radio to JTAC frequency 131.000 MHz)• Player: JTAC - finger11, Check-in 30min, what do you have for us.
• JTAC (Finger11): Enfield 1-1, this is finger 1-1, type 2 in effect. Advise when ready for 9-line
• Player: Ready to copy
• JTAC (Finger11): line is as follows
1, 2, 3 N/A
[4. Elevation: ]3 feet MSL
[5. Target: ]APC
[6. Coordinates: ]GG176760
[7. ]Marked by laser, 1688 <----- *** NOTE: IF THE JTAC SAYS No mark, he isn't going to lase the target ***
[8. Friendlies: ]northeast 450 meters, troops in contact
[9. ]Egress east
• JTAC (Finger11): advise when ready for remarks and further talk-on
• Player: Ready to copy remarks
• JTAC (Finger11):
request AGM-65E
partly cloudy sky, cloud base 13000 feet MSL
• Player: 9-line read back
• JTAC (Finger11): readback correct
• JTAC (Finger11): report IP INBOUND
• Player: IP INBOUND
• JTAC (Finger11): Enfield 1-1, CONTINUE
• Player: Laser ON
• JTAC (Finger11): Lasing
(Uncage LMAV to spot lase)
• Player: Spot
• Player: IN from the xxx
• JTAC(Finger11): 'Cleared HOT!'
(fire LMAV when in range and break off)
• JTAC(Finger11): Enfield 1-1, target destroyed
sequence then repeats -
• JTAC (Finger11): Enfield 1-1, this is finger 1-1, type 2 in effect. Advise when ready for 9-line
... etc.
Are you doing something similar ?
It'd be helpful if you posted a track, showing the point at which you have difficulty acquiring the laser.
-
You need to press twice on the left ddi stores page on the MAV, press it twice and then uncage :=)
No, that won't remove the crossed MAV indications.
The cross clears when the LMAV sensor acquires/locks the laser spot.
With A/G mode selected, pressing MAV twice on the stores page brings up the LMAV sight on the DDI but doesn't clear the crossed MAV indications on the DDI and HUD.
I don't know how it works IRL but that is how it is working in DCS Open Beta 2.5.3.23954
-
i still have MAV indication crossed on ddi also if missile is uncaged and i assigned laser code 1688 , 30 sec warm up elapsed, A/G IS READY ARMyes i contact jtac and mav is UNCAGED
Note: The crossed DDI MAV indication only clears once the maverick has detected and locked onto the laser spot i.e. the LMAV has a valid target and you are authorised to fire.
Is this what you are seeing ?
-
... so if I need to set a CSEL to be shown on the HSI lets say for to facilitate the landing course at a given airport, this is not possible??
You'll need to add a waypoint for the airport, if it doesn't have one i.e. if it's a divert that wasn't in your flight plan.
-
Thanks for the report but it's been reported several times already, please use search before starting a new thread, thanks
-
On top of that, the times given for "TCN 10" are totally out of bounds and hardly ever change... usually around :05:55 - :05:58 in my Caucasus flights even though the station selected is just around the corner. Plus fuel remaining stays blank.
If FPAS can't calculate - time to waypoint, fuel remaining or if the TACAN is invalid, Xs should be displayed. If TAS exceeds Mach 0.9, the fuel remaining is blanked.
I haven't seen the X's in DCS, only the fuel remaining getting blanked. I think the other data stops updating ? Perhaps WIP.
Also I wonder what "ADV- FPAS" wants to tell us...That FPAS can't calculate the HOME FUEL caution i.e. fuel remaining is blanked
A-10C vs L-39ZA
in DCS 2.9
Posted
TL;DR:
The A-10C
Detail:
L-39ZA
The L-39ZA has a great flight model and is ideal for learning or improving basic flight skills, it's one of my favourite modules.
Without a moving map, ins/gps, etc. you're navigating using visual clues (landmarks, bridges, etc.) and route timing (F10 map or NS430 are options but IMHO defeat the reason to use the L-39 over another module) or ADF/RSBN.
However, it's not the best suited for learning 'modern' ground attack tactics and AFAIK IRL, is a stepping stone to learning more combat capable aircraft, such as the MiG-29, etc..
Weapon loadout is light and it lacks RWR or countermeasures. Even with a FAC/JTAC smoke mark, you'll be within lethal range of most adversaries (Shilka, manpads, etc.) before you've acquired them.
A-10C
I don't enjoy the A-10C as much as the L-39 but there's no denying it's a capable aircraft that gets the job done.
There's a good selection of DCS missions and training materials based off real world use.
It's systems are harder to learn, but it's easier to fly and weapons very effective once learn't.
AV-8B
It might be worth considering the AV-8B as it's similar in capability to the A-10C. However although I enjoy the Harrier, it not as 'finished' a product.
