  1. Starting at 10:17 or so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8dnFmhhxWI Is this maneuver possible in game? I'd try it myself, but I have trouble just getting off the runway without exploding. Anyway, with the high degree of accuracy with which the plane has been modeled, has anyone tried pulling this off in game?
  2. manpads are very expensive. My entire time in the US Army I never saw one. I was even in a ranger company at one point (as communications support). They're also big and heavy. So even against a large, serious opponent like Russia, China, or the EU, I think there would be plenty of opportunity for ground strikes without being swarmed by them.
  3. I think the F-22 and F-35 may be the only aircraft in our inventory that have the computing power to do that. It would take not only target tracking logic, which is pretty simple, I think, but also motion prediction logic. That's no where near as simple. Think of all the things that have to be calculated and predicted in a high-g turning fight. Even if the target is only 10° off bore, the computer has to figure out where it is, which direction it's going and with what velocity, and predict, based on previous path, where it will be going half a second to a second later. Not exactly a simple thing to calculate in real time. But yeah, that capability would make a lot of sense.
  4. I don't think it will be a case of 'no more manned fighters'. Signal interruption is a real threat to drones, so unless we surrender control of the craft to an AI, we'll have to have vehicles with humans in the cockpit, at least as a reserve force.
  5. It's still not back up. I saw some recent tweets on their twitter account though, so maybe it's just technical problems? EDIT: Scratch that, their last tweet was december or 2012.
  6. I'd like to see some mix between procedurally generated or elevation data generated terrain, and detailed maps. Currently, you just get flat featureless terrain if you fly off the map. It would be nice to have all the maps connected on a globe by something that looks plausible, even if it isn't populated with houses and stuff. It would be very cool to be able to fly from Nevada to Caucaus, and have something interesting to look at along the way. It would make long range bomber sorties possible, too.
  7. Such beautiful 3d modeling! Have you built any plane models?
  8. My understanding of the way the ArmA engine works is that the individual units aren't necessarily that computationally intensive themselves. The problem comes when they start shooting. Each projectile has the dynamic forces acting on it recalculated every tick of the simulation. You get 40 infantry units shooting all at once, and suddenly it turns into a huge load on the server. When they're just standing around, or walking about though, it's not that bad. I could be wrong about that though.
  9. I don't think my computer would melt. More likely it would just sit there, blink a few times in shock as it tries to open the map file... then go into a beach ball spinning coma.
  10. +1. In my initial fooling around with CA, I discovered that my aircraft have a tendency, if I start them from parked, to take off, fly in a holding pattern for a bit, then land and get out of the plane. It would be nice to have a way to scramble aircraft that have landed and shut down. It would also be nice to be able to spawn in new units when playing as the Game Master. Call in a C-130 full of airborne infantry, for example.
  11. nice. :D Now, how about adding some rear firing missiles and auto-targeting turrets for taking out targets at any angle from the ship?
  12. I've developed very sophisticated exploding and ejecting skills, myself.:pilotfly:
  13. It'll also be interesting to see if we get any Virtual Flight Schools, once we get our first trainers.
  14. I would guess that it might be a side effect of not having a dedicated server exe, (I don't think DCS servers can be run on traditional hosted servers) but I could very easily be wrong. If that's the case, then hopefully the problem will be greatly reduced when the dedicated server does get released. Of course, it could also just be that we're a really small community and most of us have day jobs, hence limited time to get on and game. Personally, I'd like to see a 24/7 game mode server so that people can migrate a little more comfortably from games like War Thunder, giving them time to play around with DCS and grow to love it for all of its sim mode detail.
  15. EDI is the AI controlled drone from the 2005 movie "Stealth".
  16. <sniff>... <sniff>... Is that troll, I smell?:smilewink:
  17. Wow, I'd never heard of that movie before now. EDI is actually frighteningly close in its basic shape to what I was imagining (minus the HAL 9001, and ridiculous hypersonic dogfighting, of course).
  18. Lol. I really wonder why no one has made any simple fantasy mods like a tie or x-wing yet. When you dispense with the need for realism, I would imagine it would be rather simple to add a new ship, er, I mean plane. >.>
  19. Lol, that's believable, I guess. :) And DEFINITELY lazors. Realistically, by 2050, I expect that weaponized lasers might fit on a heavier fighter or interceptor and function for anti missile purposes. We should probably throw in some deformable flight surfaces too, while we're at it, don't you think?
  20. So, looking through the 3rd Party project subforums, it occurred to me that the biggest obstacle to bringing new aircraft into DCS is lack of details about avionics, the physical shapes of vehicles, etc, what with so much of modern aircraft being classified. This got me to wondering, "What if someone were to just invent a plane from scratch, without having to worry about matching all the details of one that actually exists?" That led, naturally, to the question of what a gen 6 or 7 fighter might look like. What do you think? What would a 7th generation air superiority fighter, introduced in, say, 2050 look like? What would it's armament look like? How fast would it go? Personally, I'm imagining something of a cross between an F-22, and an F-16, with a single main engine, augmented for hypersonic flight by a pair of scramjets.
  21. As exciting as AFM is, I'm just looking forward to being able to buy the F-15C on steam.
  22. 18. One to set up the server and 17 to coauthor and peer review the paper about it.
  23. Flybynoob, Since you're asking so persistently, my router is an Apple Airport Extreme. I use the provided AirPort Utility to set up port forwarding.
