How does the radar find ECM source direction
Cmptohocah replied to Cmptohocah's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Thanks for replying, that was very informative. So I guess on Su-27 the only option of finding the relative height would be tilting the antenna up 'n' down. I've kind of overlooked that HUD target symbol only shows azimuth/range :music_whistling: -
I am quite curious of how does the onboard radar manage to find the azimuth (relative heading/angle) of an airborne ECM? I would assume that it would kind of measure the ECM intensity and then select the direction that has the highest peak, but if it does it like this in the horizontal plane, what prevents it from doing the same in the vertical and thus completely defining source of 'jamming' in the sky - azimuth & height? Any thoughts on this? :smartass:

Well, I just tried it with some 3.000kg of fuel and 2xR-27ER and 2xR73 load out at 600m AGL and I must say it was flying almost like the one from the video clip, so I guess I shot my self in the foot there :music_whistling: I was expecting it to go haywire, but it performed just like in the video. I even tried the same maneuver of getting out of the low speed regime and it was a-ok.

Thanx for sharing the info. I think that Su-27 is dynamically unstable-not unflyable :smilewink: Low speed flight is like trying to stand on top of a Pilates ball. Check this video out (08:00 - low level flight): Oh, and yeah the flaps are up ;) (just the slats sticking out) Will try to replicate it in DCS and post the results.

OK, truth be told I've never actually had a chance to read Su-27 manual nor did I fly it in RL, but.... I simply can't imagine that one of the most advanced fighters: - gets a fantom side roll when doing negative G maneuver - goes into unrecoverable negative G dive when damaged, meaning FBW is gone and so is the airplane (wouldn't want to be in that poor guys place if this happens in RL) - starts wobbling like crazy at low speeds->shouldn't it be one of most maneuverable airplanes out there? - has exceptionally slow roll rate. Didn't do a real life comparison yet, but I will check out some videos from youtube - blows a tire at ground speeds above 320km/h on takeoff roll - has extremely high roll inertia-once the heavy roll starts, not really easy to stop it at all - steers to one side when nose gear locked on takeoff List is endless. Now is this an accurate representation of something like real life Su-27, I will happily go back to flying Su-25/T. Oh I just remembered: once I've stalled it out at around 5km alt and it went belly up, which is fine, but then it keeps dropping like a stone all the way to the ground without even changing the heading or twitching a bit. Felt like I was in a piece of marble or somethin'. So much for the 'professional' flight dynamics.

You mean Su-27 with a roll rate of an overweight A380 is not enjoyable?! I love the feature when you get into negative Gs and the engines die out - just like 1940 Spitfire did :joystick:

MiG-29 needs flood lights disabled, show only instrument lights
Cmptohocah replied to Pronin's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Sure, if you could explain to me on how to JGSME it  I have no idea about these things. -
There are three 'modes' of operation: PPS (ППС) - Front Half Sphere, good for detecting enemies coming towards you ZPS (ЗПС) - Rear Half Sphere, good for detecting enemies running away from you AVT (ABT) - Automatic, kind of a compromise between the two. In short, use PPS to detect targets further away that are flying towards you.

MiG-29 needs flood lights disabled, show only instrument lights
Cmptohocah replied to Pronin's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Current Mig29 is crap. That's it and I am convinced that developers are deliberately doing this! Any way you can download here the fixed SPO. It took me 15-20min to fix this in Photoshop. This is how much developers care. Drop the downloaded archive to \Mods\aircraft\Flaming Cliffs\Cockpit\Textures -
I can tell you one thing: dog-fighting can be considered as a martial art. When it comes to which plane turns better and quicker, it is all useless if you come across an opponent who is good. Then it seems that even a Su-25T turns 10 times better than MiG-29.

MIG-29s; can't see the 'Airspeed and Mach Indicator'
Cmptohocah replied to fitness88's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
I would quite disagree, since this is the primary speed instrument (when it comes to performance) to be looked at above a certain altitude. -
Su27 radar+EOS lock - launch resolution
Cmptohocah replied to Cmptohocah's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
I just had a similar situation again last night and tried implementing your 'hold the fire button' procedure :joystick: - it worked! Thank you once more for the explanation - some poor guy got shot down because of you! -
Thank you very much for the answers. I do appreciate the input. Had no idea that F-15 could climb and accelerate like that. Thanx once again.

Su27 radar+EOS lock - launch resolution
Cmptohocah replied to Cmptohocah's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Thank you for the reply. Some things are still not clear thought: I was most certain that I have locked the target using the radar as I have identified it first in the radar search mode. If I have a IRST lock, why does the radar refuse to lock on? Does this procedure actually work? Radar is already on, so I guess you meant it will lock on. First time I hear of this, but I guess one learns something new every day. Also, I had no idea that you can keep a lock with EOS and keep the radar in search mode. -
First of all I have to apologize: I was not on afterburner at all, but I will try out how fast Su27 can go with 6xR-27ER and 4xR73 and 5t of fuel at 7-8k altitude with full burner. Here is the video of the incident: [ame] [/ame]

Su27 radar+EOS lock - launch resolution
Cmptohocah replied to Cmptohocah's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Why is there no radar lock? Dist is around 32km, he/she is head on doing 1210km/h and flying at some 3km alt. I did def. not lock him with EOS. Thanks. -
Su27 radar+EOS lock - launch resolution
Cmptohocah replied to Cmptohocah's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
It was definitely a hostile airplane. One bar in the radar return and also 'A' is displayed in the HUD. -
While reviewing one of the tracks I came a cross this situation where an enemy a/c is locked with the radar set to ON together with EOS, but no launch permission was issued. The 'LA' (ПР) just keeps flashing. Please see the screenshot below: My question is: was I supposed to perform an action or was it just a case where there was a reason (not known to me) for the launch authorization not to be issued? Thanx in advance.
-
I will try and dig out the track. It shouldn't be a problem since it was my last flight online.

First of all I wouldn't like this thread to become red vs blue arena, but rather help me understand the Su-27 performance as it is modeled. What first got me thinking about this subject was that I find the Flanker quite sluggish as compared to Mig-29 and, as I was to find out latter, F-15 too. Now, I understand that it's quite a large airplane but then it also has power-to-weight ratio more than 1. This means that the airplane has more thrust than it's weight, so the size kind of doesn't matter-there is influence of air resistance, but I guess that people at Sukhoi took this into account when designing it. Now, I shall describe one of the situations that happened to me while flying online: I was chasing an F-15 who went defensive, and had dropped some 3km in order to defeat my incoming (good for nothing :) ) R-27ER. I went in full after burner, even though I knew there was no chance of catching up but had to stay on him in case he decided to turn back 'hot' again. What happens next blows my mind away: from some 2km alt and running away, this F-15 climbs to over 12km and not only that, it accelerates from some 1200km/h (TAS) to well over 18000km/h (TAS), while doing it. Now, I can barely achieve 1200km/h indicated in level flight at some 7km altitude. My question is: is it possible that Su-27, air supremacy, best that Russian air force has to offer, world record climb performance, fighter is so much lagging behind the F-15? Or am I missing something here? I am not talking about different loads and weights, but rather general performance between two airplanes. It seems to me that F-15 is a class better than Su-27 in flight performance, and I was just wondering is this the real picture and if it is, how can Su-27 be called 'the best fighter in the world' when it basically doesn't stand a chance against the eagle? Hope some of you can bring me to better understanding on what is going on. Kind regards,
-
It seems that native Su27 has a repeater as well... ouch  . Question is: can it be switched to something else other than repeat mode?

For what I understand the principle of SARHs and ARHs tracking a target should be the same as with passive IR missiles with the difference that IRs are tracking infra-red signature (or a spot if you will) in the sky, where as radar guided ones are tracking object that is illuminated with waves of a different frequency. Correct me if I am wrong. If this is true, that means that SARHs narrow 'search' area is the culprit for it's susceptibility to chaf, right?

I would somewhat agree in that Mig29 is pretty downgraded at the moment. After the latest update my RWR regarding the range ring and now I even have some strange 'bar' like thing inside the cockpit. It's like someone is trying out their modeling/programming skills and just debugging them using official updates :) I also enjoy flying the 29 - hopefully it will get fixed.

More maneuvers are being prepared. Eventually the entire program will be posted here. Next maneuver will be a hard-turn including 360deg ;)

I would like to present all of you virtual fighter/striker pilots with my illustrations of the official Yugoslav air force aerobatic fighter flying training program. This includes basic aerobatic maneuvers for the aircraft type Mig-29A (designated L-18 by the Yugoslav air force), which can be practiced on practically any fighter/striker airplane found in FC3. I find that mastering this kind of flying will help sharpen your flying skills and improve combat efficiency. Let start with the basic aerobatics maneuver: 1. DIVING HALF-SPLIT * * - I couldn't find a proper English translation for this maneuver. Perhaps some one could correct me on this one. [see full size] 2. HORIZONTAL TURN [see full size] 3. COMBAT TURN [see full size] 4. STEEP CLIMB-DIVE [see full size] 5. SPLIT 'S' [see full size]
