I tried it and have stereo view in game but the convergence is all wrong for me and I have double vision. When I use oculus overlay I can't change any settings without having to alt tab out of DCS to overlay and by doing so I loose the DCS image so I'm editing blind. Can anyone tell me how best to fine tune the view?

I hope they call me too. I haven't used my monitor at all with DCS since I got the rift and Nthusim beta software. Native head tracking and 3d would be fantastic.
-
Search this thread for Nthusim. I am using their HMD software with DCS and it works well with the two helicopter modules. No 3d yet unfortunately but still very immersive given the limitations of the dev kits resolution and headtracking.

I will say this wont be for everyone. If you fly the A10 and need access to MFDs targeting screens etc then the rift in its current form will be unusable. As far as the Huey goes it really has potential. I need to spend some time messing with profiles in VAC software. Perhaps I could simulate verbally directing my co-pilot to do all the head down work in the cockpit while I concentrate on flying.

I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to test the pre-release Nthusim HMD software mentioned on the previous page (after purchasing it of course). It does a great job of looking after the image warping and I even have a usable mouse pointer in game. Well it would be usable if I could read the switches lol.

Well I just flew the Huey with the rift and I have to say its extremely immersive. Unfortunately once zoomed out enough to get the proper FOV the instruments are not very readable. Of course that was to be expected with the resolution of the dev kit. The VSI, altimeter and airspeed indicator needles are visible so it's possible to get a good estimation. The issue I have now is drift on the yaw access. I have assigned a joystick button to centre the view but it needs all too frequent pressing. I wonder if the magnets in my headset are messing with the rift IMU. Not sure if it also contains a magnetometer! Coming from a projector and track IR setup I can say the rift is a much more enjoyable experience. Roll on the HD consumer version.

I hadn't realized this software was available! I have owned Nthusim sofware for a while now. I used it with my projector on a curved screen. EDIT: Brad I purchased the pre-release software and posted on the Nthusim site. Perhaps you could reply there at your convenience (user name Fergus).

My dev kit should be with me tomorrow. Has anybody succeeded in getting it to work in DCS in any form? I'm passionate about helicopter sims. I fly x-plane 10, FSX and the Huey in DCS. So far it seems none of them fully support the Rift. I do hope that will change. The rift seems like the perfect add on for virtual VFR low level flight.

Check you don't have one of your cyclic axis assigned to collective as well. What you are experiencing doesn't happen unless you are giving way to much forward cyclic.
-
Roger that sounds like some interaction on your controls. You should be able to climb into a low ground effect hover and then without touching the collective transition into forward flight and climb away once your forward speed is high enough to increase lift. It is even possible to slow down and descend again from several hundred feet back into a ground effect hover without ever touching the collective from your initial lift off. Check under options controls to ensure only one axis is assigned to your collective. Also ensure the throttle is properly set and governor is active before lift off (needles together in the green. If they split on lift off something is wrong)

I really hope it will be. I'm currently using 1280x800 resolution with a projector setup that fills a good deal of my field of vision and sadly it is lacking the clarity needed to tune radios or read labels on switches. For out of the window flying with occasional instrument sweeps its fine anything complex inside the cockpit is an awful eye strain and with trackIR even becomes nausiating at times. I will definitely buy the rift to try it once its released. The immersion should be fantastic. I doubt I will bother with the dev kit though. Edit: I should add I'm only flying the Huey in DCS. I can't imagine trying the A10 or black shark at that resolution.
-
I hope they do implement it early. For me the main drawback I foresee based on what I've read so far about OR isn't how to interact with the sim (who wants to keep using a keyboard in a simulator even without OR!) but how the resolution will effect reading gauges and MFDs etc. Hopefully the planned higher resolution for the product release will improve things. According to most reviews 640x400 per eye in the dev kit makes reading text nearly impossible. I hope 1080p will improve things.

I'm using a laptop for running the sim and displaying it through a projector over the laptops HDMI port. I am also running the air display app to connect the iPad to the laptop. I downloaded the Helios software and loaded the Huey profile. I had to resize the panels and the monitor settings needed tweaking. I'm currently trying to adjust the settings to remove the laptop display from the equation. Helios is seeing three displays. Not sure if it will work with the laptop screen off yet though. Ill give a more detailed description once I play with it a little more.

Thanks guys. Great work going on here. I now have Helios running on my iPad. Weapons switches are not working for me but its early days. Looking forward to seeing more features for the Huey added over time.

Occulus rift does look interesting. I'd love to see how that resolution looks in the headset. I'm currently using 1280 x 800 with an Optoma GT750 projector and I can't read the gauges or switches in the Huey. Even with trackIR it's still a strain on the eyes :-(

Anyone with a link to a Helios tutorial? Cowboy are you making notes? ;-) Are you using a tablet for the Helios display over a network or are you using a second touch screen monitor? EDIT: never mind. I just read your signature.

I've searched and haven't found a dedicated thread for those building Huey cockpits. I know it is still early days in the Beta but with work underway on Helios profiles etc I'd love to see other people's setups for the Huey. Please use this thread to share pictures, ideas and ask questions about Huey specific home cockpits and controls. Ideas for multi monitor/projector setups, overhead panels and centre consoles welcome. Please share your setups so others (read 'Frusheen') can get ideas!

Thanks guys

I'd like to know this as well. I'm using an 800p projector which means I haven't good enough resolution to tune radios etc in the virtual cockpit. Better yet I'd like to have the overhead and centre console available on my iPad but that's beyond my knowledge of DCS for the moment.

So what's the secret to landing in the correct place.
Frusheen replied to Cowboy10uk's topic in DCS: UH-1H
Don't control your descent rate with the cyclic! That may be your issue. Use collective to control descent rate and cyclic to control forward speed. Break the approach down into segments - Practice your descents at a set speed and set descent rate so you learn consistency and get a good idea of how the glide slope looks out the window. Dont land in the first attempts just practice going from 400ft to 100ft at maybe 40kts. As confidence increases practice decreasing forward speed in the final stages and descend into ground effect. I'm not a RL pilot but have found this technique works well. -
I have read of the real Huey being capable of twenty to thirty seconds of hands off hover in calm weather. This is due in large part to the stabilizer bar. I find this FM much nicer to fly and much easier to hover now that that awful bobbing is gone. I never entered VRS with the previous FM but understand it was incorrectly modeled. I'm flying with 'full size' controls using zero deadband, no curves or saturation and don't use trim. So far I'm very impressed. Like everyone else I'd like the final release to be as accurate as possible. I'm looking forward to some input from real Huey pilots. One thing I have noticed is a very slow pirouette rate even with full right pedal. Anyone no if that aspect is accurate?

Can someone tell me how to update? Nothing in the dcs world news tab and nothing in module manager! Any help I'm new to dcs?
-
I'm in the process of mapping my 'real' helicopter controls after just downloading my first DCS title. I have a mechanical idle cutoff (C-Tek collective) so I do hope they could implement it in a similar way to the dodo sim 206.
