You know, i really love this sim and i am really looking forward to what is coming up in 2014. Until then i will try to keep tweaking what i can to make it even better in its current state.:) I am pretty confident ED has some nice things for us already in their pipeline.... Best Alex -

Hi Vedexent, i totally agree with you when it comes to pure FPS fetish. But IMHO i think there is pretty big different between hunting the best possible FPS beyond everything that is needed for the sole purpose of the sim and looking to get the needed FPS to make the sim actually work in all situations. To be honest, i do have a framerate limiter set at 50fps. Everything beyond that is of no accountable benefit to me. But looking at your 7 points i would add one more: 8. Is the experience smooth enough to not interrupt the immersion? Well, i guess i would have to say no to that one. Don´t get me wrong, i deeply respect ED for what they are doing and how they are pushing the genre and i also think that DCS is one hell of a great flight-sim. But when i fly the hog at Angels10 and everything is perfectly smooth and i engage into low altitude combat, turn around towards a city and suddenly my FPS drop by 50% and the plane feels COMPLETELY different than it truly rips me out of the immersion and frustrates me. Right now i have my settings optimised to give me the most stable performance without going for the most FPS or the highest eye candy, but i think that DCS has way more potential in it! Greetings from Berlin Nume -

Hey Cenobite, THX for your input, i'll give those tips a try. Hopefully I will get something out if it. Best Nume -

A-10C, much more vulnerable than it sounds to be ...

I would rather say that gunfire is much more dangerous than you thought! -
Best Nume

Does anyone else feel like using wingman is cheating?
Nume Noctre replied to nickexists's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I think using the wingman is just fine and adds up a little to the realism. In the end it is all about getting the mission done in a most efficient way. To me that includes using all of your resources - including your wingman. In the game however, the wingman is AI and if you don´t use it right he will die quickly. So i rather use the wingman for the easier jobs and leave the heavier stuff to me. Attacking more challenging targets by yourself is more rewarding and you don´t run our of ammo so quickly. Plus: Your Wingman is so much more effective when attacking infantry!!!! :D Best Nume -
Hi Undctiatc, when using LGBs you have to make sure you are using the right release and lasing mode: 1.) Standard - Manually lasing the target (Latch Off Mode) Once you released the LGB you manually have to switch on the laser by pressing AND holding the pinky switch. The laser will only fire as long as you hold the pinky switch. You will achieve the greatest precision when you start lasing around 8 seconds before the weapon impact. 2.) Optional - Manually lasing the target with Latch On Before you release the LGB go into the CNTL Page on the TGP and switch LATCH to on. Once you released the LGB you manually have to switch on the laser by pressing the pinky switch ONCE. The laser will keep on firing AUTOMATICALLY until the weapon impact. You will achieve the greatest precision when you start lasing around 8 seconds before the weapon impact. Make sure to switch off the laser after impact to prevent the laser from over-heating. 3.) Optional - Automatically lasing the target Before you release the LGB go into the DSMS page and into the weapons-profile. Go into changing the profile settings and activate AUTO Lase and set an AUTO Lase time (at best between 8 - 12 seconds). Once you released the weapon the laser will automatically start firing until weapons impact. To achieve the greatest precision it is essential to have a correct lading time (8 - 12s) before impact. Furthermore it is important to release the weapon in a good flight-position. Since LGBs are only released in 3/9 CR mode it is enough to have the solution cue pass through the reticle. However you will have more precision when you try to have it pass through the reticle to ensure the most stable flight position. Hope this helps. Best Nume

Finally......I did it! Hey guys, after almost two years of reading every review in the internet that i could find and after all of your warm recommendations I went out this morning and bought that Warthog Hotas stick. Boy, what a beats is it when it comes in its packaging. I never expected it to be that heavy! The build quality seems fantastic for a stick. Anyway, I opened it, took it out ( not much in the box exept the throttle and stick) connected it and fired up DCS and almost anything was set up immediately. For some reason it did not map the trimming function but that issue was solved without any problems. Up in the air the Hog suddenly feels like a real plane, much more realistic, much more sensitive and much more stable. The HOTAS makes such a huge difference. It feels rock solid and all the twitching and stuttering and lagging of the X52 is gone.....yes. Can't wait to feel this baby in a heavy crosswind landing at Batumi!:joystick: All the buttons are where they are supposed to be, which is a great thing. But it also means that I have to learn another "workflow" now....so, back to the school bench:smartass: I think I will take some time until I am really working with this thing and until I can get everything out of it. But I think the money was spent well. I hope it will last quite a few years. But there is one thing.......not having a twist rudder function anymore means I have to get the MadCatz Combat Pedals.... How am I going to explain that to my girlfriend..... Nume

Hey, thanks. I think i am going to try an even lower setting and see if it brings something without loosing to much immersion. My rig was practically build for DCS but my goal of having at least 50 fps no matter what is still far away. I'll keep tinkering!:-) Nume -
Overclocking the i5 3570K, which cooler?
Nume Noctre replied to VanjaB's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi, I have the 3570K on an Asus P8Z77 i Deluxe running at 4.6Ghz and i am using the Thermalright Macho H02 on it. Have no stability issues and the system noise is very quiet. Nume -
Hi folks, i am wondering wether i should get the Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog. I used to play with a Saitek X52 wich is "alright", but feels like what it is, a plastic stick without enough buttons.:D The Hotas looks really nice but then again it is 300€. So i was wondering if it really had i big impact on your gaming experience? An impact that makes it worth buying..... Nume

Finally a good FPS gain!!!!! I finally had the time to check the impact of a few settings. AA Settings, Tree Shadows, Traffic Settings etc. gave me only a very very slight gain of FPS, so it seemed, that the graphics was really not the problem. Even the preload radius had no real impact in my test setting. But after tinkering with everything i found out, that the CLUTTER DISTANCE has a HUGE IMPACT on performance. Not thinking of it as a BRUTAL FPS KILLER i curiously set my settings from 1500m to 700m and BOOM!! The staggering result - in my test mission i had an FPS gain of almost 33%!!!! Meaning with everything set to high, no mirrors and in flight over a small city with the TGP on my frames went from 27 to 37!!!! I never expected such a huge impact from the clutter setting! Cheers Nume -

Some Hard Numbers ! Guys, here are some hard numbers. I just ran a little benchmark run. I silmply started an instant mission with the Su-25 in "Ground Attack" and took the FPS readouts with the MDF on and off. No controller inputs, except slewing the TGP cursor a bit down to see land in the MDF. See my inital settings below. Results: Initial Settings: MDF Off: 37 MDF On: 28 Change from 16xQ AA to 2xAA: MDF Off: 41 (+10,8%) MDF On: 30 (+ 7,14%) Another Change from 1024 MDF Res. to 256 MDF Res.: MDF Off: 41 (+/- 0%) MDF On: 30 (+/- 0%) Another Change from High Shadows to Low Shadows: MDF Off: 41 (+/- 0%) MDF On: 30 (+/- 0%) What can we see? Expect a little more FPS through going down from 16xQ AA to 2xAA any other graphical setting did not seem to have the slightest input. I even changend everthing in the settings to low (looks horrible) and the results were a mere: MDF Off: 53 (+/- 29,27%) MDF On: 34 (+/- 13,33%) It seems the FPS problem is not really related to graphics..... What do think? Do you got something else you consider worth trying to improve the FPS? Nume
