I'd agree with psycho there - old hardware is the key. The only thing I'd add is that if that doesn't work then try and make an image of the disk (because you'll be able to set the reading speed, slower the better - try for 1xspeed if you can).

FreeTrack (free TIR like software) hell yeah!

In a search for other solutions, I came across this little app: http://www.cachya.com/esight/overview.php Turned out easy to set up, just print the card and attatch to head. Best bit is that it can emulate many different kinds of output and map them to the axis of your choice. It's not free.. but it seemed pretty sharp. Demo is limited to one axis though which is a bit of a beast. -

Black Shark Update, 16 September 2007

I can see it now... 'Shoot him!' 'Who??' 'HIM!!!' 'But I've already shot him!' 'NOT THAT ONE!!' -
Self shadowing is hard to get right. I would guess that they are using the shadow mapping technique rather than shadow volumes. To get it pixel perfect you have to use floating point textures.. and because you can't be sure the target platform will have support, and if you can't dynamically compile your shaders from hlsl - you have to go with what you can. The break up of shadows into seperate apparent units is just caused by the lack of resolution in the depth channel of the texture generated. But hey, aren't those models looking beautiful? *getting excited again*

Well, if it's a badly coded shader and there's no fustrum culling then it's possible. Doesn't matter how fast your programmable pipeline is if the code that's running it them isn't optimised - it's easy to make a shader that looks good but that can stall a 8800GTX. If it's happened pretty evenly on all the systems you've had, then it's possible that Lomac is using software vertex processing - that's a lot slower - but the only way I could think of that being the case is if there's a bug in the code that enumerates the devices. Piqued my interest though, I'm usually a HLSL man myself, but I'll try and look over the relevant shaders when I get time.

What are the red lights on the Su25T gauges?
spugnut replied to Omega Oska's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Right - The top one is the AOA-MAX pip, it just shows the maximum angle of attack so that's not an invalid data one. Next one is similar - V-Max - maximum speed. The next is your radar altimeter - if you're higher than 1000m then the data is not accurate, hence popout. Finally the popouts on the HSI usually suggest that your gyros are wobbly. I think you have to let them spin up for a while before you take off or the readings are wonky - it's just telling you that it may be a 'tad' off. -

spugnut replied to Omega Oska's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
There are popouts on quite a few gauges - as far as I'm aware they are warnings that the presented data may not be accurate. -
Hmm, not sure you can get round that one. It would be reasonable to suppose that Lockon would be using DirectInput to get an exclusive lock on the keyboard while the application is full screen - if that's the case then you're stuck I'm afraid.

Need some help with sound effects
spugnut replied to SuperKungFu's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
As Paralyzer says, it depends on where the vocals are in the mix - if it's set equal centre channel (and it most often is) then you can do a 'centre cut' to remove them.. there's lots of vocal removal software that automates the process. The only thing that can fox them is when producers have panned off the reverb differently left or right. The only way to know is to try! -

Right, here's the native betty versions. I've looped the German max-g ogg over to break up the breathing sound a little - hope it's ok. Again, I've got the project file for it if you want any changes. sounds.zip -

Aircraft performance and their limitations?
spugnut replied to centermass's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
There's a huge amount of data available for human G-Tolerances, although it's worth noting that there is a considerable difference in the effects of instant-g against sustained g. Pilotasso is quite correct to say that 14g will cause tissue damage, but actual injury largely depends on the delta-g (change in g against time). Edit: This one's quite interesting too, featuring a dedicated g-hungry loon! http://csel.eng.ohio-state.edu/voshell/gforce.pdf -
Warning - this post is completely speculative. <speculation> If BS is the end of the Lock-On line, then it's just possible that some time post-release E.D. could decide to open the floodgates and release the tools and data required for interested third parties to edit the pits and flight dynamics for exisiting flyables - depends on how modular and pluggable the core is.. It's possible that FM's and pits are hard-coded, in which case what I've just said can't happen. How does that help? Well... I would assume that unless E.D. have developed an entirely new way of defining the data structures for BS style pits and dynamics, then there will be some forward compatibility with the next project - although I imagine that if E.D. decided to include a 3rd party modded A/C in a new release they would want do the conversion themselves to keep the new data model in-house. </speculation>

OT - Your flight sim credentials..
spugnut replied to spugnut's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Yes it did, merely a light hearted dig! Oh alright dammit - here are the answers to the first set. 1. In which PC flight simulation are you most likely to hear yourself say "Tracking - looks like the lizard"? TFX 2. In which PC flight simulation is there a quick start mission called 'Zulu Bandits'? F-29 Retaliator? It had one called Zulu alert (question was wrong, what was I saying about memory?) 3. Where are you most likely to hear your weapons officer say "Switching to LoBall"? Was thinking team Apache, but Longbow et al accepted. :smilewink: 4. Psion's flight simulation for the ZX spectrum was unique in which key navigation tool? 361 degree compass 5. In which flight simulation are you most likely to be flying an aircraft with the call sign "Baron 9-Lima-Golf"? Flight Unlimited 6. Which Rowan simulation is one of the few flight simulations to also include a strategic campaign based on real world events? Battle of Britain, Flight of the Intruder 7. IL2 was vulnerable to which engine management exploit? a flaw in the engine management for the manual pitch aircraft that allowed an apparent boost in engine power if you rapidly twitched the prop pitch up and down 8. The attatched image is a screengrab from which 1990 flight sim? Mig29-Fulcrum 9. What was the first PC simulation to allow you to design your own aircraft with a GUI? Chuck Yeager. 10. In which simulator can you make your co-pilot throw up if you fly outside the envelope? U.S. Navy Fighters Now mark yourself from 1 to propellor-head. -

I remember the way that all three MFD's sprung up with EJECT in bright red lettering.. and that damn siren cunningly recreated in 8-bit sound or PC speaker glory - it really made you want to punch out fast. Think retaliator must have been the first time I heard the AIM9 growler. Do I ever.. that and speedloader. Even the slightest humidity got on the tape and it'd never load again - back to shop, buy new copy. See, and these young folks thing they've got a problem with SF. :music_whistling: -

As age encroaches, dispute looks less and less attractive and reminiscence begins to gain a certain charm.. partly because during dispute you have to maintain a train of thought right to the end, but while undergoing misty-eyed reruns of the past you can just say 'remember xxxx... that was a xxxx that we'll never see again. I recall xxxx it late one xxxx....... So how's the wife?'. I think this thread could be more a "they'll never be dead, as long as their name is spoken" sort of thing rather than a focused evaluation of their merits and complete lack of advanced weapons flight model - that's why it's marked OT. :smilewink: -

Aww.. I thought that and then thought, nahhh - can't be, no-one else in the world will ever have played that! Had it on the spectrum, so no speech for me, but still special in being the second flight sim I ever played. -

Woah.. I remembered that I'd seen those missions listed somewhere - but I'd completely forgotten I'd ever owned the game.. getting old... This one's driving me nutso though.. I know it, I know it... -

Hehe, I'll let you have this one - it's U.S. Navy fighters.. think it's one of Jane's. Absolutely right.. even if the question wasn't! The answer to #1 is .... TFX. Also outstanding as the first sim I had where an inverted low altitude ejection resulted in a splattered pilot - now there's attention to detail. I guess #4 is a bit more esoteric, one of the coders for Psion's flight sim for the speccy had a brain-fart while putting together the cockpit, and managed to invent the first compass with 361 degrees in it - went from 000 to 360, forgetting that they both refer to the same bearing. But that'd make #3 'switching to fireball'... -

There was actually a flaw in the engine management for the manual pitch aircraft that allowed an apparent boost in engine power if you rapidly twitched the prop pitch up and down - I think the effect was most noticable and commonly used on the Tempest. -
Just a quick test to see how long you've all been at this.. ;) 1. In which PC flight simulation are you most likely to hear yourself say "Tracking - looks like the lizard"? 2. In which PC flight simulation is there a quick start mission called 'Zulu Bandits'? 3. Where are you most likely to hear your weapons officer say "Switching to LoBall"? 4. In which simulator can you make your co-pilot throw up if you fly outside the envelope? Some of the answers may not be completely accurate - 'cos I've not had time or inclination to research them fully. I'll post them up later...

I've had three installments of the FS line - don't really know why, 'cos I fell out of love with the series with FS2000.. I think it was during takeoff, rough crosswinds resulted in me stacking a wing into the hardtop. It said 'crash' in the top left and paused. 'Pop!' went my immersion.
