AIM-7 Performance
Terrificfool replied to HawkDCS's topic in Release Version Bugs and Problems (Read only)
What altitude are you experiencing this maximum range of only 6-7 nm? The missiles only achieve maximum ranges at high altitude and high mach for both launching platform and target. -
The USN definitely flew the F/A-18C. Making a request is one thing... rationalizing it with bogus, misleading, or wrong statements is another. :(
-
Do AN/PVS-15s automatically focus? From looking at them online it appears that you have to manually adjust the focus?
-
Thanks Mav! As always you are doing a wonderful job!
-
You know you can execute instrument approaches with those navaids, right? And that USN/USMC fly TCN or PAR approaches when operating from land bases?
-
The 'helmet' volume doesn't just include the radio audio, it also includes the RWR and other audio that is normally piped through to the pilot's headset. You're suggesting that players should compromise their audio settings to solve the issue of AI and human AWACS/GCI stomping on each other on a single radio frequency. Your 'solution' is NOT a solution at all. Rotating your radio preset selector to another channel when you want to use the human GCI instead of the AI not only IS a solution but it's also the solution that makes the most sense. Maverick: can you perhaps update the AI AWACS frequencies in the mission so that this radio frequency separation exists? I think already Overlord is on 260 MHz, so it would only require assigning Magic to a frequency other than 257.8 MHz.
-
Is it possible to get the AI AWACS or the Human GCI frequencies assigned differently? When there are a large number of players the AI AWACS steps all over our human GCI and it becomes near impossible to make out what he's saying. Of course for the FC3 planes you can change the receive mode but for the full fidelity aircraft there appears to be no option to silence the AI in similar fashion.

Why take advice from amateurs when you can get it from professionals? https://www.cnatra.navy.mil/local/docs/pat-pubs/P-825.pdf is the all weather intercept training manual for advanced flight training. The USN uses this training prior to sending their pilots off to Fleet Replacement Squadrons where they learn advanced follow-on tactics. It covers a wide variety of subjects including MRM and SRM employment, section employment in SRA and 2vX, and generally how to win at BVR. I highly recommend you read through all of it.

[FIXED] Radar elevation problem after update
Terrificfool replied to Solid84's topic in Bugs and Problems
Correct. You will also see the elevation carat jump on the next bar to the new elevation range which seems consistent with the elevation slews you command. I am not sure the behavior itself is a bug. See below: The radar scans in bars to generate frames. When you adjust the antenna elevation it makes the most sense, to me, to adjust the commanded scan volume of the antenna and then have it update it's elevation between bars. If you directly drive the antenna elevation mid-sweep you would have skewed bars which seems undesirable. Also of note: CNATRA publication on All Weather Intercept training doesn't talk much at all about the elevation indicator. Instead elevation is set via the altitude bracket numbers on the TDC to ensure adequate radar coverage of a particular sector and ultimately the mating of the section radars. I don't think you need to concern yourself much with the elevation indicator and instead focus on the TDC and it's altitude bracket numbers. Now when it comes to the speed of the update and the fact that the elevation appears to compensate for roll/pitch the wrong way.. that may very well be a bug in the indication of antenna elevation. -
I don't think it's ever 'automated'. The flight leads call the formation changes according to the squadron SOP and pre-briefed mission specific procedures. But that wouldn't be put into the mission editor as events or triggers, rather the player flying lead would make the calls.

Doing the Lord's work there Mav. If anyone has issues I'll try to hang out in the 104th TS and give a little troubleshooting advice myself (I have nearly a dozen different audio IO devices in Windows so I've had my fair share of SRS nightmares haha).

I have to say I agree with comie1 about keeping the Mirage 2000C on Red. Right now the current setup makes the RWR really useful, props up numbers on REDFOR, and makes VID in all the non-radar/non-IFF aircraft actually doable. If pilots absolutely have to fly blue they have a multitude of good platforms to choose from.
-
I've been having an absolute blast on your server lately. Keep up the good work guys! I especially like the turbulence you have set up in the mission... you can really feel it on final!
-
Let me put it this way, you can home on a VOR with your radio and fly an NDB style non-precision approach off the VOR. I wasn't sure if that would be called a VOR approach or an NDB approach? After all doesn't an RMI do not much more than a typical ADF set in terms of azimuth display to the pilot?
-
I think typically Navy pilots use a TACAN or PAR approach when going into land airfields, as most airbases won't be configured with any specialized equipment specific to the Navy. You can fly a TACAN approach right now in DCS:F-18C as long as the airfield has a TACAN beacon. Otherwise you can fly a VOR approach if the airbase has a VOR. http://www.altairva-fs.com/training/ava_training_ifr_vor.htm <- some primer on VOR approaches http://navyflightmanuals.tpub.com/P-1204/Tacan-Approach-P-12040114-114.htm <- some details on TACAN approaches Since there are typically no approach plates available for the airfields in DCS you'll have to wing you own approaches, but for both TACAN and VOR it's rather straightforward to improvise an approach. If you can find actual plates (or fly on NTTR where the 476th have made excellent plates) then you should fly the procedures as charted.

Have you tried intentionally coming in low and then climbing up and going over the deck? And when you do this you never see the ball, red or yellow? If you do this the ball should go: no ball>>>red ball>>>yellow ball

Modifying waypoints on different sequences
Terrificfool replied to AMVI_Vinci's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
I think the waypoint database is just that: a database of waypoints. And a waypoint sequence is a sequence of those waypoints from the waypoint database. Thus, there is only one waypoint 1, one waypoint 2, etc. In the sequence programming you are just selecting which waypoints, and in what order, constitute a particular flight plan (very similar to the A-10s flight plan and waypoint database). -
As I understand it, in DCS the IR/EO Mavericks are far more robust AND capable than they are in real life. IRL successful locking depends on a lot of criteria so the lock behavior is quite variable. From what I've heard this boils down to typical lock ranges that are less than what we see in DCS. For example: IR mavericks are inhibited by a variety of environmental conditions that aren't present in DCS. IR mavericks can only lock onto targets that have sufficient thermal contrast to lock. So ambient temperatures, target conductivity, reflectivity, degree of convective cooling, background conductivity, reflectivity, etc all play into whether or not you can lock. At certain times of the day IR mavericks will tend to be completely useless, even on a nice clear day, because the environmental conditions cause the targets to be a similar temperature as the surrounding terrain. I forget the term but it's something like 'IR inversion' or the like. Now contrast that with an AGM-65E. If you can successfully point a laser at the target and the seeker can see it, it will track. Much more reliable!

Any plans to bring back Op Longbow?
-
Mavericks still not working. Not selectable via Stores page.
Terrificfool replied to Rhinozherous's topic in Resolved Bugs
Just fired two of them on an MP server. Click A2G mode. Click IRMV. Wait until the weapon indicates RDY on the stores page. You can now de-sellect IRMV and go back to NAV mode if desired. To select them again for use: Click A2G mode, then click IRMV on the stores page. -
Are you already in A/G master mode when you try to select a weapon? If I remember correctly you cannot select stores while in the NAV or V/STOL master modes.

104th Phoenix - Operation Longbow - Dynamic PvP Mission
Terrificfool replied to 104th_Maverick's topic in Multiplayer
104th users primarily mission triggers and cuts down on the number of scripts they use (though they do use some). You can actually download Operation Longbow from the link in Maverick's post and take a look at how it is implemented, if you so choose. My own testing developing a few missions for DoW and doing some early testing on SeaQuark's Korea server seemed to confirm that trigger based missions are more stable, at least for me. The mission trigger system is substantially lighter weight and more stable than the simulator scripting engine running large scripts continuously. On-demand,event driven scripting on the other hand seems to be a bit more stable. Contrast the 104ths approach with something like Blue Flag which has substantially more scripts running. A lot of the scripts that have come out over the years rely on continuous execution of the script which is non-ideal in many ways. Piling them on is not necessarily the best for stability purposes. -

I've been flying BLUFOR over the past several days and noticed quite a few of our CAP pilots aren't getting on SRS. Just because there's noone in the GCI slot doesn't mean there's no benefit to getting on comms. You can check in with other players, find out who's attacking what, and coordinate with other fighters to gain air superiority. :) I got shot down as far south as our tanker tracks (despite owning Senaki, Kutaisi, etc). Won't be a stretch for them to shoot down all our HVAA if that keeps up. -
Question about the A10C survivability
Terrificfool replied to Eviscerador's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I have a few suggestions for you guys going for gun passes on armored vehicles: You can safely gun BTRs with impunity with the 30mm. Just shoot at about 1.3-1.4 slant range and break off by 1.1. 100 rounds a pass and you have a high Pk on the BTR from any aspect. This means you can safely take out 10-11 BTRs with your GAU-8 alone. You can safely gun the BMPs with impunity with the 30mm, but at ranges that don't have a high Pk (1.4 slant range and above). I find I often have to make a second pass, sometimes a third to destroy the BMP. This is of course, aiming for 100 rounds on a pass. Best results when you engage from the rear of the vehicle. This means you'll realistically probably only take out 4-6 BMPs with the full load of gun, but still respectable use of ammunition. You can kill tanks but you use so many rounds that you're not optimally using your ordinance when you do so. I recommend only gunning tanks when it's your last option. You and your wingman might kill 4 or 5 tanks with your ammo, but you could kill a lot more targets by using the gun on the APCs and bombs/mavs on the tanks. -

There are gbu-38s in the mission? Must have been a recent modification.
