Looking good! :D (Working on a load of wee fiddly internals myself too - you have my sympathy... )

I'll play the Devil's Advocate here a wee bit, but do we need this level of ground "bling" in what is essentially a flight sim? How much of it will you actually notice whilst zooming along at 250mph, let alone once one has some altitude? (I noted that DCS is being described as "not just a flight sim", but let's be honest - most of us are here for the fidelity of the flight modelling and various period aircraft, rather than looking forward to driving an M4 through realistically-modelled bocage...)

What is the current state of VR in DCS; was your headset worth buying?
Cripple replied to Jamesp1's topic in Virtual Reality
Heh heh - my thoughts exactly. Admittedly I am working with faaaaaar fewer switches though! :music_whistling: -

Watched the vid in your sig. Nice 'pit! :) How do you find it now, working switches etc whilst effectively blindfolded? -
Is that how "Johnnie" Johnson got his moniker then? :P Ach, gun freezing won't be a problem - everyone will just zoom about at treetop height as per. :megalol:

Welcome to the party! You'll be building your own sim-pit next...

Excellent work! :D

And here is a copy of the 1944 mk IX pilot notes, which covers the bomb fusing and other such wee nuggets of info... (Cockpit drawings at the end of the section) Section 1.pdf

Well, the boffins tell me it looks like a hut with a dirty great aerial next door... Can't miss it.

What will be the first thing you do in the spitfire?
Cripple replied to flare2000x's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Pop the kettle on and save yourself some time... http://zenoswarbirdvideos.com/Images/spit/SPIT9MANUAL.pdf -
Hands up if you'll be pre-ordering? :) <raises hand>

We seem to be thinking alike on this one.:) Someone with 3d skills could easily knock up some of those German rescue buoys for a spot of local colour too... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133683

And makes getting home again all the more interesting too... :P (Wags, thanks for the info. Much appreciated.)

Makes you wonder why this particular period is being simulated, eh? The poor Spitfire, a thoroughbred point-interceptor, reduced to ground-pounding due to a (historical) lack of aerial opponents. Luckily, in DCS-Normandy, the Luftwaffe's finest will be out to play. :)

Sounds about right. :) The later pilot's notes certainly cover the switching for said bombs, and the shot's we've seen of the DCS Spitfire show the bomb release switch on the throttle grip.

New in-cockpit map for proper WWII navigation
Cripple replied to Talisman_VR 's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
+1 That's certainly my plan for dealing with navigation under the (VR) hood. Dead-reckoning, then use landmarks - like the nice rivers in the area. Once the area we're flying over is finalised I'll get a (period) map of the same and study it to start to get a feel for it, and once we actually have a flyable map we (unlike our historical peers) have the option of taking a guns-off pootle about to learn the map. Worst comes to the worst: fly north, find coast, fly west, find landing beaches. Found more coast? Fly east... find landing beaches. Land for tea and medals.:) -
Thanks for the link and feedback, people. :) Sooooooo, another wee update. Here's a pic of the lower port side of the cockpit after the test switch bank (see pic) was installed. It was certainly "interesting" to fabricate up, but seems to look the part. Oh, and the "map box" is just one of those metal post boxes painted green.... Easy. I've also had a chance to play about with the DK2, CV1, Vive, and Gear VR at the local VR tech demo. The CV1 and Vive are much of a muchness really, with the CV1 edging ahead in the comfort stakes (the Vive feels slightly more nose-heavy). The CV1 is significantly lighter and more comfortable than the DK2, while both the CV1 and the Vive seem to have better lenses in them. It's hard to describe, but it seems easier for your eyes to adjust to having the horizon a ball-hair from your nose on the CV1/Vive, particularly compared to the Gear VR. Personally, I found the CV1 lighter and less intrusive than wearing a diving mask, and didn't notice any perceptible loss of peripheral vision. As for the graphical defects... pass - I was too busy concentrating on what was happening around me! Three hours of having fun with a huge grin on my face. Can't wait to get a headset. :D

Short missions? That's a relative term when your wee spitfire only has about a hour's fuel...

Looking good! :D

Turn the volume up, and grin like a loon. :D -
That's not saying much though, is it? :P

Unless the (historically inaccurate) presence of the "buffed" Axis aircraft (in game) is used as evidence that the upcoming Spitfire mk.IX is somehow "nerfed", and should really be a mk.XIV... or a mk.22 or a Spiteful or something.

Probably just different skins. I imagine people will make their own skins too.

Agreed. Ooooo, it's Friday... maybe we'll get an update?
