It's kinda fire and forget missile. R-27r forget about target after you fire it.

R-27T worked for me couple times in multiplayer. Strange that AIM-9 can't do it. BTW that happened with magic locking ring in HUD? Can't see it anymore, but I saw it in older version of Mirage.
