PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
MilesD replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hey Fox, Thanks for the pic ,its very helpfull. But I am a little confused by it. Is that a whole screen shot? If so, I certainly can see a problem. Miles- 3421 replies

Update: New Firmware is up v062519: Corrected factory reset; HMS can be reset to factory calibration and settings by pressing and holding both black buttons on the HMS while pressing and releasing the white reset button. After successful reset the cursor will move from the left edge of the field of view, all the way to the right edge as confirmation. Factory Calibration is for Rift S ,Full Screen, Stretched view, but it will get you close for all other V/R Headsets. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

I think you guys are right at the about the audio for now. To FoxDeltas frustration, I screwed up the reset to defaults in the last update which caused a problem if you have a bad calibration. I am changing that now and adding some watchdogs to help prevent a bad calibration in the first place. I have already done most of the Knee-boards and put them in a mission, so you just load up the "PointCTRL_Set Up.miz" and its all there. Thanks again Mariner for the recommendation, I think its going to be a big help. Miles- 3421 replies

Firmware Update Important for current users: The new firmware will require a new calibration because it uses 5 targets to zero, and adds a different algorithm for the upper and lower half of the display. Don't worry about edge calibration until you become familiar with it, because it's only an enhancement and not required. Mariner3302 had the great suggestion of adding the instructions and a quick reference to the knee-board. With the new menu system I think that would be great. I was working on adding a Bitchin Betty to assist, but I think the Knee board is a better idea. Thanks Mariner, Miles- 3421 replies

hi Iffoif, I will have a mount for the Odessy+. I am making the new ones as they come up in the orders. You dont need to buy anything else, Just the Kit and sepcify wich mount you would like. I am posting when I am shipping in groups of 10. So when your number is up just follow the linked instructions. Just a DCS PM for verification and an email for PayPal invoice. Thanks, Miles Update: I just finished and posted the twenty five pages of instructions with the edge calibration. It looks complicated but it not, I will have a video up soon to demo it. Shipping will restart tomorrow .- 3421 replies

Did I send you the wrong mount?. I will get another one out to you, and please don't worry about paying. Sending out a PointCTRL sample was the least I could do, its not a big deal, so please dont even give it another thought. You have already done enough as the "Keeper of the list" and don't feel you have to do any more. Now after a week with the grand-kids, get some rest my friend. Miles- 3421 replies

Yes it does work, but nowhere near as well as it does in DCS. Los has some time on other sims, and I have tried it on them all. The problem I find is their mouse implementation is horrible. It almost seems like their devs don't even fly their own sims with the clickable cockpits. But thats just my opinion, and I am partial to the DCS refined cursor implementation and clickable cockpits. I know ED takes a lot of heat, and I honestly don't know why. Big picture, side by side, there's nothing that even comes close to what we have. To me, it seems ED is a company of enthusiast who are passionate about what they do, and we are all lucky for it. Well I should get off my soap box, I try not to get on. Lucky you, I am hoping for grand-kids, but I don't know if it will happen. But I really enjoy going to NYC to hang out with my daughter. Update: Waiting on feedback from the testers on the update package and procedure to ensure it works on all systems. As soon as I get the green light from them I will email a zip file to update your HMS. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Update: Here is a rather boring video demonstrating the basic concept of the new firmware. I hope this one is more intuitive for users. Its all on the fly in VR through the on-board firmware only. It should be available tomorrow on the website. Instead of "two weeks" that drag on, I seem to be on the "yea, I can have that ready for tomorow" but seldom do. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Redtail, Good to hear from you again, I am currently in a shipping pause for a firmware update. Carol will send an invoice as soon as we resume shipping, Should be soon. Thanks, Update: I just finished testing the new firmware with a new intuitive calibration procedure and user settings. My goal was to try and make it as intuitive as possible. I spent the last 4 days going through many iterations to get to a point that should be acceptable. The GUI will primarily be for key bindings and did not really help with calibration. I am working on updating the instructions with the new firmware procedures now. Highlights Pre-Sets are gone Simplified intuitive cursor limits. So, after I responded to your post about my my personal button preferences, I took another look at it with fresh eyes. I think your suggestion is how most people would feel. I have muscle memory and mindset from "doing it the way I always do", but I think you suggestion is a better solution, and I will try and add the option to the firmware update. Thanks again RogueSqdn for your great suggestion that will make PointCTRL more user friendly. Miles- 3421 replies

Shipping Pause For those coming here for the "Now Serving" Post, I took a short pause to update the firmware when it became apparent that the zero procedures were complicated for everyone. After some more testing, the new firmware should be released tomorrow, and I will resume shipping with numbers 20 thru 30. New firmware highlights. 1) Simplified Calibration - I think it was the whole box thing that was overly complicated, so it did away with that and added a simpler method, but kept the second portion of defining the viewing limits. 2) Multiple user settings thru FCU - You only have to press the button on the HMS once for 3 seconds to enter the overall settings mode. Different setting such as zoom and micro calibration are cycled thru with the battery check button on the FCU. 3) Zoom Function - Added FCU to HMS proximity Zoom toggle and adjustment. 4) Micro Calibration - Micro Calibration allows the user to Fine tune the FCU to Finger alignment, and aids in locking the cursor in place when your head moves when using the FCU. I think that's it for now, Thank you to everyone who suffered through the initial calibration procedures and gave feedback. I hope this helps. Miles- 3421 replies

Yea, the instructions are getting long and it needs table of contents and page numbers. Just to many dam words. I have what I think is a slightly simpler calibration procedure that does away with the presets. I looked at all those boxes in the instructions and even I got confused. I would like to send you a test firmware update for your feedback if you don't mind. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Sorry Missed 2 and 3. The hand rotation thing does not work for me and was not designed to work that way., I always use the vertical hand movement just like the mouse. Give me a few minutes to fire up the Hornet and check things out. I am adding a fine tuning feature that may help, as well as the zoom function which will be in the first firmware update in a few days. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Oesau, Mouse button operation is in the new instructions. Short Version is, Set mouse wheel direction with buttons 1 and 2 and execute wheel movement with button 3 Wing fold is a good example. (unlock wings) 1) Press button 2 to set mouse wheel direction to backward. 2) Press button 3 to emulate wheel rolling backwards (lever comes out) (Lock wings) 1) Press button 1 to set mouse wheel direction to forward. 2) Press button 3 to emulate wheel rolling forwards )lever goes in) just be sure when you press button 1 or 2 to change wheel direction you are not on a switch. Mouse wheel speed will start out slow and increase as its held. Hope that helps, Miles- 3421 replies

Please don't apologize for asking questions, it is helpful for everyone, including me. My head is so far in the weeds with the minutia to make this stuff work that I often miss the big picture. Mapping buttons will be in the future GUI which I am working on. For me, it is more intuitive to have the forward most button for the left mouse, especially when pressing buttons. But it's really just a personal preference. I personally also found it more intuitive with switches because you are usually placing your thumb or finger on the opposite side of the direction you intend to move the switch before applying pressure to the switch in RL, But that's just my perspective and it is also usually dependent on switch orientation (vertical vs horizontal). There is certainly no right or wrong way to do it. It just comes down to personnel preference, and you will have that capability in future firmware updates. Thanks for the question, Miles- 3421 replies

Reverb Measurements, Hey Guys, I can't seem to track down a good set of measurements for the Reverb. Their website states 7.9 inches wide but I don't know if that refers to the face only or total width. If anyone could let me know, reference thew pic below it would be great. Thanks, Miles

Updated Instructions, Oesau pointed out several issues with the instructions that made calibration difficult. While I am working on a new simplified calibration procedure, for the interim I hope the new instructions make it a bit easier to understand. If you haven't please download the new Instructions PDF in the link in my sig. The updated instructions will be on the website soon. Thanks Oesau, Miles- 3421 replies
