PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
MilesD replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well, I think we are ready for "The List" We talked about this before but just a reminder on how it will work. PointCTRL has been driven by this community, so if anyone has any better, or more fair ideas, please let me know. I will start with groups of five and put up a "Now Serving" post with the start and end numbers. Since my son just stated the website last night if your group is called, if you could send me a PM through DCS with your email and then send an email from the same address to orders@pointctrl.com and specify which HMS mount you would like. No need for address or anything else. I will then send an invoice for payment. Each new "Now Serving" post will have reminders for Pricing, shipping, options, and a link to https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3862014&postcount=690 "The List" Well its 0422 in the morning so I will post the first "Now Serving" after some sleep. An additional note: I remember there was some discussion about this, so just give me a minute to put on my Benevolent Dictator hat. No one will lose their place in line if they miss their groups "Now Serving" post or don't have the funds to purchase immediately. However once a new group is called, they will have shipping priority by line #. After the current groups orders are shipped, all of the orders from those who missed their groups slot, will be shipped by order received. After all of those are shipped a new "Now Serving" group will be posted, and so on. Benevolent Dictator hat off, Thank you for understanding, See you soon for... I guess for the PointCTRL launch. PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

I know you were joking about wasting my time ,and I know I have said this before, but I truly appreciate everyone's participation in this project. I especially like to see questions to, and answers from the few testers, which will be increasing this week. I also appreciate the civility and mutual respect shown to each other in this thread. As we know, it's not always the case in all threads when there are delays and other issues similar to what we have experienced with PointCTRL. That being said, I will field this question because I also have an ask. Sirrah, you are correct, PointCTRL only simulates the mouse. The perception of rotating a knob is not consistent and dependent on how you rotate your hand, but we can get there. The reason PointCTRL appears to rotate the knobs is because when the hand is rotated a certain way the IRLED moves in a circular sweep which includes up and down. If you rotate your hand from the wrist with your hand pointed slightly upward, this IRLED sweep radius is increased which also increases knob rotation and effectiveness. Now how do we make it work better? I have previously used the LUA files for modding my throttle switches for 2 events on the single pole single throw switches. I never looked at mouse functions but if we can switch the knob rotations from the mouse Y axis to X axis the whole knob rotation thing with hand rotation will work very well. I am trying not to get sidetracked, so the ask is, if anyone has the time to check out the LUA files for this it would be great. I will add some pics of hand positions as soon as my phone charges. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

One of my first VR experiences was after taking a few gulps of a freshly opened bottle of beer that my wife just put in my hand, I promptly droped it on the floor from 2ft thinking I had set it down on the hueys center panel.

Here is the current PCB with a first surface mirror. Just did a preliminary test, need to work the angles of incidence a bit. I think I will just go ahead and make the new face mount PCB. Edit Fixed Scale Miles- 3421 replies

Rift S Mount Update: Here are both of the mounts, Obviously I am not diggin the non camera blocking one. Working on the face mounted version now. @ Mariner, Great point about adjusting the FCU's to, just tight enough to prevent rotating. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Roger that, I will post a cantilevered mount latter that does not obstruct, and I am sourcing small first surface mirrors to do a face mount with the current PCB design. If there is interest I will do a PCB redesign for flat mounting to the face of the VR headset. The challenge is that the Sensor is designed to be mounted 90 degrees to the PCB. Yes I have, and its a good suggestion. I will be adding a front mount to the line up. I really wanted the camera as unobtrusive as possible. The original prototype was mounted on the front and I did not like it, however I have downsized it quite a bit. I will update that model in a few days, it used a small mirror so the HMS could be mounted parallel to the face. I will be using this set-up for the Index to integrate into the front well. If sales continue I will probably make a dedicated unit without the mirror. All this stuff will available separately and compatible with each other. Yes, as long as the FCUs are not visible, you can also toggle off the HMS with the left button on the HMS. There will definitely will be an option for those who will use the Rift controllers over their head, or don't want to obscure the camera. While I am not 100% sure yet, I think that is the only function of the top camera. I believe Fusedspine tested this, but will confirm with Oculus. For those who do not use the controllers, they will have the unobtrusive top mounted option. While not optimal, the current option does allow you to snap off the cover and remove the PCB, (takes 5 seconds), and the camera can then see thru the hole in the bottom of the mount. The FOV may be slightly obscured though. Thanks for the questions, back to soldering, finishing a batch of 20 FCU's tonight. Miles- 3421 replies

Hansangb makes a good point. Additionally, moving exterior views with the mouse still has to be worked out, because they dont work very well now. PointCTRL does work on the 2D menus to get into and out of missions as well as others menus, its just not optimal because when you move your head the cursor moves in the opposite direction. Basically you have to stop moving your head around when you want to select an item on the 2D menus. As long as the FCUs are not visible to the HMS, control automatically reverts back to the standard mouse. If the FCUs are visible, and you want to use the mouse, you can toggle the HMS tracking on/off by pressing the left button on the HMS. 7 attempts to get the design right for the Rift S. When I try and design stuff, I often think of a movie I watched with the kids when they were young. Stuff was always going wrong for this guy in a bowler hat, and he would say to himself "Perhaps I haven't thought this through thoroughly" Latest design lets you remove the cover and PCB to expose the upper camera for controllers in other games. This is the working solution pending real world testing with the S.- 3421 replies

Rift S, Low Protrusion, Camera Blocking Mount. Here is the first go at the the Rift S mount. This one will block the upper camera but is unobtrusive. I was not happy with how far foward the HMS had to be to clear the top camera. Still working thru a few options. Miles- 3421 replies

Just as Mariner said, update does not affect calibration and everything is stored in the HMS. When I get around to the GUI you will be able to manage different profiles. Thanks for the question, Miles- 3421 replies

Hi A2597, You always have good thoughts on this. I did not think about adding other functions to the zoom like you mention. My thought on the Night Vision would be the APB (Aux Push Buttons) (name from Ratcatcher) which the HMS is already set up for with connectors. The VRB's (Virtual Radial Buttons) (name from JoeS) are still in the works with proof of concept done. It will add 16 hot-spots around and just outside the FOV that can be assigned any function you like. Each hot-spot can also have 3 separate functions, FCU BTNS 1,2, or 3 foe a total of 48 logically positioned virtual pushbuttons just off screen. Back to what you were talking about, Press FCU BTN 1 while cursor is not on a switch, bring cursor close to face to turn on flashlight, ,night vision, oor other function. Great Idea, I like it. I will just have to confirm that it does not interfere with other functions. Your idea can be implemented on the HMS, which we can update VIA firmware, I believe Mariner has already updated his with suggestions that he, Hansang, and Los made. I wont work on it now because I am focused on production, but it will be a definite option in the near future. Thanks your your ideas. Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Ratcatcher, That width measurement seems a bit narrow? Of course if you didn't abandon your British Imperial System in 60's for the metric system you wouldn't have this problem of tiny marks to close together on your measuring device. Miles- 3421 replies

Ahhh yes, the old "Smoking Jackets". To this day, Carol still talks about them, She always wore mine around the house when we were dating back in the early 80's. I have to find one for her again. Back OT: Updating the firmware with the zoom function, Does [right ALT] + keyboard zero[0] work for V/R zoom for everyone. Right now I have to hard code it into the HMS. The zoom function will enable users to zoom in by moving the FCU closer to the HMS, and then zoom out by moving it away again. While PointCTRL is very functional, the zoom was really the only thing I found cool about using it. (Man, I really suck at marketing.) Miles- 3421 replies

You could do that, and it would not make much of a deference in FCU tracking. Using the current PCB for the S will probably allow fitting without an included spacer(will block top camera) or with included spacer (will not block the top camera). I am sure we will acquire the info on the what specific functions the top cameras data is read for. Miles Production FCU Fronts CNC Milled. Lost one to the vacuum system.- 3421 replies

Yes, good point, that would work fine in the interim, and probably long term. The generic mount comes with EVA foam, sheet ABS plastic, and extra double faced tape, just for this purpose. I rather make a dedicated final solution to keep the HMS as unobtrusive as possible. At a minimum I will have a mount that does just what you described with the current PCB. Then probably a dedicated PCB solution with an offset sensor. Miles- 3421 replies

The Forum has spoken, If that's what you guys want, that's what I will make, and it makes sense. I have some thoughts on it and will post some 3D models for your feedback. I know the 3D printed ABS enclosures don't look the best, but they are great for these quick mods. Thanks for your input. Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Fusedspine, Thank you so much for checking. I thought the upward facing camera was probably primarily for tracking the control above your head when they are out of the FOV of the other cameras. I also suspected it was not used for the head tracking, because 99% of the time it would only see a white ceiling without any discernible features to identify and track. Unfortunately, I don't think my melon head and wide IPD will work with the S. The reverb is supposed to have a bigger sweet spot, Thanks Again, Miles- 3421 replies

Consulting with Los on Vive HMS enclosure after diner and Mojitos with the wives. Just Killing time here waiting for the latest video to upload to YouTube. While not up to Hansang's standards, it demonstrates the important step of conducting an Infra Red Light survey of your room. This would have saved Mariner3302 some time with his bright South Carolina sun. Thanks, Miles Edit: Up- 3421 replies

"You are correct Sir" as Ed McMahon would say to Johnny Carson. (FOG reference) I don't know if I made it clear, The HMS will cycle through your current settings and the 3 presets,. In other words when you enter the calibration mode, the "waterfall" as Mariner3302 calls it, is your currently set cursor limits. You can then press the right button again to make fine adjustments to those settings. When you press the left button you cycle through the center, stretched, conventional monitor, and then back to your current cursor limits. At any time, if you get confused, just press the white reset button on the HMS and you will revert back to your previously saved settings. Thanks Hansang- 3421 replies

Awesome Video That was awesome Hansang, Thank you so much, I truly appreciate you spending your time doing this for everyone. Your video really is a great supplement to the instructions, which you are also fixing up for us. This will make following the instructions so much easier because you presented the big picture in a very logical and concise way. Thanks again Hansang, and because of your efforts, I can focus on getting the orders out. Miles- 3421 replies
