PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
MilesD replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You are correct. PointCTRL references where you are pointing in relation to the headset and body. so re-centering will not have any effect, pointing forward is always pointing forward. You dont have to use the proximity zoom function, its an option. It should be in tomorrows videos. Basically you set the distance between the FCU and HMS to where you want to zoom in, and then zoom out. You can zoom in by putting your hand closer to your face, like holding binos. default is off. But by pressing FCU buttons 1 and 2 together, you can also zoom in. Thanks for asking, Miles- 3421 replies

@ FoxDelta, Is your Rift still reporting as a second monitor with the expanded desktop? @LuckyHendrix, Nothing else is required, However I just received some charging and battery monitors, which I highly recommend, and will be putting on the optional list for around 12.00usd. Sorry for not being responsive to PMs yesterday, I am trying to get the update and videos out. @Cordite. I should have your spares put together by the end of the weekend. What ever anyone in this forum needs I will do my best to accommodate. In the case of spare batteries though, My bulk shipment is delayed so shipping full inits for "The List" will take priority over spares, unless of course something is broken or has failed. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

You just calibrate once. You are really calibrating the HMS not the FCU's Full screen mode for this Firmware version, I will be releasing a new one tomorrow that works in windowed mode. Good suggestion on FCU orientation, I will include a pic of them on my fat fingers. If your using the Rift S, you can use it as is, to become familiar with it, and then calibrate. Their are no pros to mounting the HMS like Track IR when using VR, but the con is it would not work. However, for fixed monitors that is how its done, Chic will be running it that way. Still have too experiment with the best fixed sensor position. It will probably be above and behind you. I am almost done with the videos, they should help a lot. Thanks and good luck. Not at all, which is why I included my lighthearted, but probably accurate paraphrase. On a serious note to everyone, I am concerned that I am not getting enough negative or critical feedback. If something is frustrating you, or you don't like a feature, please PM me, or better yet, share it with the forum. If you are having an issue, someone else is probably having the same one. I am not a professional programmer, engineer, or even that smart, (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night). which is why I value everyone's suggestions. I am just a retired Army Guy, and you would have to work pretty hard to offend me, unless of course you are just trying to be a dick. I am really just to ignorant to realize how difficult something can be before I take it on. To quote an old Farmer named Tom "This is a new thing and we are all learning, lets use all of the synergy we can...:D It will benefit us all." By the way FarmerTom, Your checklist suggestion is awesome, and I am on it Sir. This really is a community project. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey FarmerTom, great detailed walk through, thanks for sharing. Obviously, the last comment caught my attention. I sent you a PM with my home phone, when you get back to PointCTRL please give me a call and we can do the speaker phone thing while you set it up. In its current state, PointCTRL can be challenging to set-up the first time, Just ask Mariner3302, he is always yelling at me to make it easier. I especially thank you for your last comment Tom. To paraphrase what I think your gentlemanly comment should have read. "This efing thing is to complicated, I spent three days and all I can see is a cursor moving in a efing circle" For the 41 thru 50 group (that's Now Serving, not age) It will be a few days before we send out your invoices. I realized the documentation and videos are lacking, and I am going to spend the next day or two making videos and adding to the knee-boards. Thanks for your patience, Miles- 3421 replies

I simple hardware solution could be something like this. One micro-switch is activated 3 times. Easy to cut out and make this the center of the sandwich. Edit, I did the drawing quick and just noticed the bottom does not allow enough upward movement, But you get the idea.

Thanks for the suggestion 9echo, That's an interesting idea, My default position is always "sure, I can do that" so, sure, I can do that. As long as their is interest in PointCTRL I will keep improving it. I have a whole list of enhancements I will be doing through firmware, most notable, the 36 Virtual Radial Buttons just outside the perimeter of your field of view. Their are actually a few options to implement something like you mentioned. FireCat had some dual cursor software running in the background interfering with PointCTRL. A simple method would be the option to display both FCU cursors when they in the field of view, The one on the right would would activate by the right FCU and the Left by the left FCU. We will eventually have the option to use PonitCTRL as is, a stand alone mouse cursor, or use it integrated into the V/R environment. So Sure, I can do that, I just don't know when. Thanks for the great suggestion, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey FarmerTom, 1) Menu Left and Menu Right refers to the graphic menu item from page 17. One press is all it takes to cycle to the next menu, There will be a delay until the cursor outline of the current graphic is completed, it will then display the next outline. Only one calibration procedure is required, not one for each FCU. 2) You will only see the cursor targets, not a moving cursor of where you are currently pointing. You want to do your best to point naturally and directly at the cursor target with your arm extended as you would have it in the cockpit. Good questions, I hope that helps, Miles This might help also if you haven't seen it https://youtu.be/9GqJqrFG0cQ- 3421 replies

Thanks Guys, Hearing that you are enjoying using PointCTRL makes it all worth it. It really does feel like it was a community effort. We still have a long way to go with firmware updates to add features and precision, but right now I am just focusing on critical updates, documentation, and production. Thanks again, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey FarmerTom, You can download the latest firmware and instructions from the website, pointctrl.com. I will send you another password for the download just in case I didn't send one to you. I would recommend becoming familiar with the new instructions and procedures before setting up PointCTRL. The manual is up to date, but not the videos. PM with any questions, Good Luck, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Deano, Right now, I just have the mount that blocks the upper camera. I am still trying to lock down weather or not the upper camera is used for the head-tracker. So far it appears its only used for tracking a touch controller above your head. I have not seen any difference in DCS tracking. I think its reasonable to assume its not needed because most of the the time it would just be looking at a white ceiling with no discernible features to reference. But that is just a hypotheses at this point. There is a hole in the mount so the camera can see through it when the HMS PCB is snapped out. Eventually I will make a different PCB for a face mount, its just not a priority right now. Thanks Deano, Miles- 3421 replies

Ahhh to be 14 again, If I was 14, my Warthog would double as a bong, and there would be a Led Zeppelin poster in the pit. I dont know how the strobes and rotating line lasers of the lighthouse will react with WMR. Have you run your Reverb with it on?. I would think it would cause interference. I have the second gen for testing PointCTRL, it has the coded lasers and not the strobe but I will test it. I am going to move my lights a bit so they are always in view of the side cameras. I believe because of the wide angle lenses of the cameras, closer objects will give better inside out tracking precision. Just a thought, Miles

Unfortunately not, I have been focused on the firmware to make set up more intuitive. I will probably do the standard mount for Index, and then do the frunk in the future. When I make the face mount HMS it will be available separately. Don't hesitate to keep reminding me though. Hi Razorblade, Thanks for the interest, Thankfully, Firecat is the keeper of the list. He will probably see your post and add you to it, if not just PM him. Thanks Guys, Miles- 3421 replies

I was not getting good head tracking with the S and the inside out camera tracking. It was jumpy and I was forced to calibrate often even with a light in my pit. I had these lights kicking around and thought I would give it a try. Tracking is now perfectly smooth with no jumpiness. Miles

Update: Here is a mission file that has a few custom knee-boards to help with PointCTRL set-up. Just read the mission instructions, because the pages start from the back of the knee-board so you can get to them quickly. Down the road I will be adding audio and other enhancement to assist in set up. Thanks to Mariner3302, this was his awesome idea. Now back to shipping, Miles Edit: .miz file was to large I will put it on the website. Here is what it looks like...- 3421 replies

Update: Spent the day on new firmware to fix a issue with Rift reporting as a second monitor and an expanded desktop. I don't know if it worked yet. I am sure FoxDelta is sound asleep on his side of the world. I added back in the vertical FOV limits step, but with the more intuitive interface. After a factory reset, you can just click right past it, if you don't need it. I also cleaned up some button pressing during calibration so you dont click through them if you hold the FCU button down. Adding a few more knee-boards tonight then its back to production (I hope) I know this is taking a while, but I rather 1 or 2 people have these unforeseen issues than everybody. PointCTRL uses your monitors x,y coordinates as a base for absolute coordinates, so I can certainly see how you would have the exact issues you are having. I am glad you bought this up in the forum as it may help others as we address it. Los uses PointCTRL with a 4K monitor with no issues because his image is stretched to fill the whole screen. The same issues you are having would be experienced by those who use an expanded desktop. Ironically, the earlier firmware version would have allowed you to define your own box in the lower left hand corner of your monitor. I took out the vertical sizing of the cursor limits to simplify calibration because it seemed unnecessary. I can see I was wrong. There are two solutions for this issue. You run your DCS window in full screen mode for now, or wait a few hours as I update the firmware and add the vertical sizing option back. It will work just like the left/right sizing but in the vertical. The default will be for the standard DCS window filling the screens vertical limits, but you will be able to size it down for your application. This is something I had to do anyway for another customer with a specific purpose. I hope this helps, Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies
