How to make a quick mission for the TF-51D?
harf4ng replied to harf4ng's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Thanks will try... -
Hi, I know this is the P51-D forum, but I do not own the plane yet, and just wanted to check out how I can evade another WW2 plane, as I'll not be able to shoot back... So, first my question, is it possible to have as AI opponent a plane we do not own, like a german 109 or 190? Then, I cannot use the quick mission generator, as it usually puts me with modern planes I have no chance against. So, now, how do I create an easy mission like a dogfight with another WW2 plane? Thanks

I practice with the TF-51D as well for real life training ;) Yesterday evening I have read a chapter of my flight lessons, then I practised landing a few times in the TF-51D ^^ Sure should be better to practice in x-plane with the robin DR400 as this is the plane I fly IRL, but x-plane does not support VR, so... ^^

I should add, a random between X and Y values (not too far one from another), and maybe a % of chance to do a critical damage that will for instance double or triple the damage and that would mean a lucky shot on a critical part...

What's this thing about pacific theatre? I have heard about normandy and nevada, not about pacific... My favorite modules as well :) Though I do not own the P51D yet, only the version without weapons for now, so I just learn to fly, not to fight yet ^^

The only time I run DCS World in 2D, is when I have to change setups or controls and have to use the saitek profiler for that as well... But indeed, once we taste the VR, impossible to go back to a flat screen again... I even stopped flying in x-plane just because of that :) The only flight sim I fly in 2D is star citizen, as it does not handle VR yet, and I fly DCS and elite in VR... So amazing to be IN the cockpit. And with modern HOTAS we can put all common shortcuts on the HOTAS, and use the in cockpit switches for the less common ones... I use an HTC Vive and an X55 HOTAS. About the screen door effect, I never noticed that, but maybe this is because I wear glasses, therefore I'm used to not have a good peripheral vision. And do you know that you can map the center key on your hotas too? ^^ I have mapped the ESC key on my throttle to easily find the menu, I guess I'll try to map this one as well (will check if I can map with the X55 a short press for the menu and a long press for centering). In bold for you above :)

In a real aircraft, even if there is no centering thing, there is kinda one. I mean, with the forces around the aircraft, if the weather is calm and the plane trimmed, you can release the stick and it does not move, more or less. This is not what happens in an helicopter though, but it happens in a plane. We can't mimic that in a flight sim, except with a force feedback stick, and there is near no more force feedback stick on the market... with current computer flight sticks, either the stick stays centered all the time (normal behaviour) or if you have a stick with no spring, it will fall on a side if you release it...

You mean AI is cheating and has no such limit? :)

Is it like that in real P51? I mean, the engine overheats fast as well in a matter of seconds? I guess we should avoid as well rpm and map above the red line...

btw the mustang has 4 or 5 levels of flaps. Each level of flap is what? 10°? The robin has 2 levels of flaps, up, 1 and 2, dunno what degree it is, but with the robin we usually takeoff with 1 level of flap, and land with all flaps down. (and we takeoff on a quite large and long runway jets can use ^^) And thanks for the infos

What are the differences between the BF109, Dora, Pony?
harf4ng replied to stray cat's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I'm not english, so if the sentence is a bit strange... :) Reading the line, I have understood that the flight model is the advanced flight model, like the SU25, and that this flight model has been later improved to PFM for A-10C, P51D and other planes. But I have not understood that all AFM planes have been improved to PFM ^^ Great that it is PFM though, even if I prefer american planes than german :) -
To come back about RPM management (as this thread should not be about tailwheel... my fault ^^) I have unlocked my X55 twice throttle, and I use the right one for manifold pressure, and the left one for propeller, works fine. Also, guess when you say 3000 rpm at takeoff, this is with manifold pressure to 30 or so... as when I'm idle or taxiing, even with the propeller full, I have not a lot of rpm... only when I increase manifold pressure the rpm increases. I noticed as well that, as rpm is dependent on manifold pressure, that when we are landing and should maintain 2700 rpm, when we land we are lowering the manifold pressure, therefore we should also adjust rpm to keep 2700...

And we can't use the differential brakes when the wheel is locked? Indeed, we have airfields designed for big jets, not small planes ^^ Can't wait for normandy map (just wonder from where the german planes will takeoff if the map covers only normandy ^^)

You can turn off the vive controller to not have the glove on. As the vive controller is of no use in DCS World, usually I start DCS with my mouse, before putting the VR helmet on, and I don't even start the vive controller...

Thanks for the tips. In what kind of situation we would need to have the wheel free? And how do I check if the wheel is free or locked?
-
btw do we have sunglasses? ;)
-
I should read the whole handbook of the P51D (guess this flies the same as the TF51D) but for now I have just read the quickguide. And ok I have understood, the text below the RPM lever says that we should for taxiing keep stick full back, guess this is to have the tail wheel free, it is surely not about the propeller lever but the stick we use for pitch and roll :) And thanks for the tips Ok for landing, 2700, this is written in the cockpit if I remember well as a checklist ^^
-
Btw I wonder, in the quickstart guide, for takeoff and landing they talk about the manifold pressure, but they don't talk about the propeller (rpm) level we should have. How I should setup the P lever for that? I have read the text below the lever, and they say that for taxiing the lever should be all the way back, but what about takeoff and landing? Thanks

Except for extreme conditions, shouldn't we keep the manifold pressure and rpm into the green curve?
-
Hi, When we check the "random failure" checkbox, are failures really random? Or do they depend on the way we fly? So, they are random? Or realistic? Like, I guess the rpm and manifold should stay in the green as long as we can in the real plane, except maybe in fights, and therefore too high a manifold pressure or rpm could increase the risk of failure? Thanks

I'm flying with a real size helicopter cyclic with no return to center, so trim does not effect me much... Guess just that was because I was landing too fast.
-
It is indeed (different beast), I fly a Robin DR 400, with a cruise speed of about 200/250 km per hour ;) A fine plane though. I just started learning the mustang, can't make a good landing yet, have to learn the landing parameters. (Guess I'm landing too fast, I bump on the runway) In VR (HTC Vive) the mustang is wonderful to fly ^^ Flying with a X55 throttle, and a real size EC135 cyclic, a real pleasure... sooner or later I'll buy the P51 ^^ Though I have no pedals for now, so will have to figure out how to make automatic rudder, I have read this is a dcs option... And so, thanks for the info...

Hi, I do not own the plane yet but I fly the TF-51 which is basically the same. I have read in the quickstart guide that the procedure to takeoff is with flaps up. I'm surprised because I'm a pilot student and my instructor taught me we should takeoff with a bit of flaps (and land with all flaps). Thanks

Hi, I have setup the rotary 1 and 2 on my X55 throttle to be axis, and then I have setup them as trim for rudder and yaw in the TF-51 mustang plane. But my issue is that I move the rotaries way faster than the sim moves the trim. So the effect is for instance for a given trim, I move the rotaries, and it takes a few seconds for the sim to catchup the position I stopped. So I wonder if there is a way to make the sym reacts faster and rotate the trim faster. Thanks

Hi, When we have an htc vive controller active, we see in the cockpit a glove that mimick this controller. Though seems there is no way to do anything with this glove, or am I wrong? I mean, how can I manipulate switches with it? And if this is possible, thing this is doable do use that when strapped on an arm, to manipulate switches? Thanks
