I completely agree. I was initially kind of upset about it. But I also understand they had an agreement with Best Buy to do instore demo's so they can get their product out there into hands of everyday folks. I assume Oculus has to provide a certain amount of units to Best Buy to hold up their end of the deal so Best Buy can sell them. Kind of a trade off of exposure for product. I can't really blame them. But thanks! I am glad I am getting one too!

My Rift is coming! I was at a scheduled ship date of End of July - Beginning of August. Best Buy is getting them in on Wed/Thurs the last few weeks so I setup email/text/desktop alerts at NowInStock.net to poll their online inventory every 30 seconds. I got blown up at about 4:30PM. Went only and ordered one. Should be here next Wed! If you are inline to get a rift but have a long ship time- I highly recommend taking the 5 mins to setup an account on NowInStock. It lasted about 8 minutes before they ran out again.

Oculus Rift CV1 and DK2 Side By Side Lens View
Shogun0 replied to VR-Hunter's topic in Virtual Reality
I wouldn't say it is their final product. It is their latest. CV1 is Consumer Version 1. Just like there was a DK1 and a DK2... there will probably be a CV2 in another couple years as they refine and enhance the technology. -
Good point. I think that is one thing I noticed about the Vive roomscale videos I have seen is the cabling. Maybe next-gen will offer some kind of wireless option.

All valid points! Thanks for taking the time to reply! There are many people, or many people's significant others lol, who aren't too keen on purchasing both just to test out on one system and see which we prefer. All we can do is compare the various anecdotes out there and hope we make the best choice for us... which unfortunately, will have to be blind. Even if I wanted to test them out in a store- the nearest Best Buy and MS Stores near me that offer demos are 4 hours away. And even then, like you pointed out, it will be on unlike hardware, different games, etc.

Oculus Rift CV1 and DK2 Side By Side Lens View
Shogun0 replied to VR-Hunter's topic in Virtual Reality
I think you are 100% right about that. I know when I go to other people's houses and watch their TV... I'm like "holy cow, let me fix your TV for you..." because they have different sharpness, color, brightness, contrast, etc set that they prefer. And it happens when people come visit my house as well. Everyone has their own preferences on what provides a quality experience for them. Some guys like super bright vivid displays, others prefer a cooler or more neutral display. Some like their screen super sharp, others prefer more of a softer display. It all just comes down to personal preference. The more people that buy a VR solution that they enjoy, the more support they will gain down the road. And more VR support is awesome for everyone. -
I have been going back and forth about Vive vs Rift for months. This is no where near the first time that "Rift is a better quality HMD, Vive roomscale is amazing" opinion has been voiced. I understand you bought the Vive so you feel you need to defend it to also justify your purchase, but this opinion isn't an anomoly. I have read over and over Rift has less SDE and provides a clearer image. It is just something I thought I would share because it is another resounding "For a seated gameplay experience (DCS, Racing, Etc)... Rift provided a clearer and more comfortable experience. For Roomscale, Vive's tracking and controllers are amazing". There are plenty of people asking "Which is better for DCS, Vive or Rift?" and I am sorry, but the majority of people who have tried both say the Rift is better for seated sim experience- Vive is better for roomscale. Most people here don't care about roomscale. I still have both on pre-order. I am tempted to cancel my Vive pre-order, but I am still hesitant. But unless an overwhelming number of reviews come out that completely discredit the opinions like this video presents, I will stick with the Rift. I want a better DCS experience- which means I want the most comfortable HMD with the best image quality. So please, if you have any actual reviews of "Vive HMD is better than Rift in DCS", please post them! Anecdotal experiences are great for people who are undecided on a platform. A pro-Vive user giving huge praise to Rift in DCS shouldn't be ignored. And likewise, if someone says the Vive provided a better experience then their Rift in DCS too- I would love to see that too! It will make it easier to decide which to buy. We all want the best possible experience in DCS. If that is the Rift, so be it. If that is the Vive, so be it. I don't really care which one- I don't own either one yet. That's why I read all the reviews I can, especially if they are a Vive/Rift comparison that feature DCS specifically.

Saw an interesting video on a VIVE owner's Youtube Channel. He is 100% pro-Vive but tried the Rift. [ame] [/ame] For those who can't watch... He tried DCS, Project Cars, and Lucky's Tale. Screen Door Effect was much less noticeable on Rift. He tried DCS on his Vive and didn't have a good experience. Rift is a "wow, impressive experience in the Rift and feels like resolution is higher in the Rift. Things in the distance are sharp, clear, and the screen door felt nonexistent." He goes on to say he wanted to be disappointed with the Rift, but he really wasn't. Especially in DCS, it just looks a lot better in his Rift vs Vive. The sweet spot felt a lot bigger in the Rift. You just put the HMD on and it works and looks good. He "wanted it to suck, but it didn't". He did say the FOV felt smaller on the Rift because you almost feel boxed in. The Vive makes you feel like you have a diver's mask on, the Rift has a boxed in feeling. He says "Would I buy a Rift? No. I am a 100% Vive channel and want to support them". "Put it this way, if you are a big DCS world fan. Oculus all day long. Not even going to debate it. If you want the seated experience, go straight for the Rift. It is black and white. However, now that I've used roomscale and walking/head movements/etc... it just comes down to your game preference." "The Vive still wins. The resolution feels lower res and the games feel pixelated." ... So now July can't get here fast enough.

Curious to hear your impressions for both HMDs in DCS. This community is unique because we have a very specific use case for VR HMDs.... specifically for flight sims. When I try to ask about Vive vs Rift for flight sims, it is usually met with "yeah yeah flight sims are great and all.. but roomscale!!!!!!!". I don't play many games, just flight sims really. I am not looking for roomscale, I am looking for HMD vs HMD comparison. Which seems to be hard to find.

No prob. Here is the main thread Scrolled down and saw this comment: "This is amazing.. Really, It almost makes the CV1 the CV1.5 First I could barely read my dials in DCS World but on 2 I can read every damn dial on my dashboards. Really really nice find. Have a 780. Still framerate is fine with 2 in DCS." Curious if anyone here sees the same results.

Interesting thread about using the Oculus SDK to increase the resolution. Apparently if you have the card to handle it, it makes a big difference. My Rift won't be here until mid-July. Boo.

Oculus Rift CV1 and DK2 Side By Side Lens View
Shogun0 replied to VR-Hunter's topic in Virtual Reality
It isn't just DCS forums. I have read that on both the Rift and Vive subreddits, the Rift forums, etc. The only caveat that I have read was that the Vive does have a brighter display. Other than that, the Rift is a bit more comfortable, a bitter clearer image, and that is why I have read in multiple places that the Rift is a better option for a seated experience. I love the fact that there are two viable products. Competition between them will bring out the most in them both. -
Found the other married guy here ;) That is a great idea. The whole "roomscale" concept looks really cool. I just don't have a dedicated room/space for it and don't see myself using it much other than the "Hey, Cousin Eddie is here... check this out... okay cool, back to the flight sim now..." Everyone at work knows I have a nice sim setup and they are anticipating the day my Rift gets in lol. Hope it doesn't disappoint. I am trying to keep my expecting in check. I am expecting this to be staring through a grid getting blasted in the eyes with a spotlight. Under promise, over deliver to myself lol

So I have been going back and forth between HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. I have both preordered. Wife is making me cancel one. I am leaning towards the Rift- from everything I have read it is slightly more comfortable and has a slightly better picture. The only downsides I have read is that the Vive has a brighter picture. Plus, I read ATW is awesome for delivering a smooth experience. Haven't used a VR headset yet- can't wait to get into it. :) Built my PC beginning of this year to support it.

Aluminium Joystick/HOTAS table mounts - Monster Tech

My pair shipped out yesterday. Will post my thoughts when I get them in. My bulky PVC stand just takes up too much room and dissuades me from wanting to fly. -
Why aren't there today any real good joysticks?
Shogun0 replied to FlightControl's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
One thing that has helped me was installing an extension between the base of the joystick and the joystick. It lets you offset the stick counter clock wise for a comfortable resting position, and the additional length allows you to make finer inputs because you aren't fighting that super strong spring. -
Ok I've decided not to wait for pascal
Shogun0 replied to Jateu's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
But when gp100 comes out.. why not wait for 1080ti? But when that comes out.. way not wait for the next years model? Or just buy one now. If you want the 980ti, then get it. It is more than enough horse power to run DCS. I run it flawlessly at max settings at 1440p resolution with it. It isn't like you are married to it either. You can always upgrade in 2017, or 2018, etc. Overall, I didn't want to play the 'waiting' game. I wanted to play actual games. :P Even if Pascal comes out tomorrow, it isn't like every game is now going to run like crap on my 980ti. Any new games coming out will run fine awesome on my 980ti. It will take time for developers to take advantage of the GPU atchitecture and develop for it. -
I mean, guess gender can be considered "Input and Output"...?

TM Warthog mount- should I be worried?
Shogun0 replied to Shogun0's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well, after thinking about designs (thanks Necroscope!) I finally was able to completely straighten out my joystick stand. Just rocked it back and extended it out to my chair. And since then, I have also built a new desktop (980Ti,i5-6600K0) and thought.. man my monitor is far away! So I bought a new desk (cupholder was a must). But then I realized even with a new desk, my joystick was too tall with the extension and I didn't want to lower it. It is perfect now.. slightly rotated ccw, forearm parallel to the ground. It is just comfortable! So.. I thought well since I have this awesome new desktop... bye bye 21" Samsung monitor. Hello 27" 1440p IPS monitor (overclocked to 96hz). But it was still far away! So I purchased a nice VESA-mounted monitor arm so I can now adjust the height/tilt of the monitor.. and pull it as close as I want! Since it is 1440p, I don't see any pixels at all. It is butter. And if I want to play another game, browse the web, log into work at 3AM like I have been for the last 3 nights... I just unplug the single USB cable from the front of the PC (thanks to USB hub), slide the entire stand back, push the monitor, mouse, and keyboard back... and I'm good to go. Thanks for all of the help and ideas guys! I love my new setup and I feel very comfortable with it now. -
haha that is an excellent point! I wasn't trying to be condescending. I apologize if it came across that way. I should have rephrased it that it ships direct from Korea and not sold under the popular name brands such as Acer, Asus, Dell, etc. :)
