  1. It means you should stop playing and go to bed. Your regularly schedule death and destruction has gone off the air until tomorrow morning. :P Yeah, seriously though, its just a filler screen while it calibrates. :)
  2. You forgot to add "along with at least making sure it's own people don't get poisoned in the process". ;) I think we should (hypocritically, I know) leave the topic of DU to another thread, unless we specifically want to know if it will be in the DCS module, which is a foregone conclusion since it obviously will be.
  3. There go my chances of buying one. :(
  4. I'm looking forward to this one. It will be a nice warm-up for my Eagle and Viper. :) As for DU in the sim...well, its a bit like having a MiG-29 with no R-73s. Its their bread and butter. I mean, you had DU in LOMAC, right? You get a GAU-8, you get depleted uranium. That's what it shoots for AP. Maybe you don't fly the A-10, but it was in the sim seeing as how that's all it really uses as far as I know. I 100% understand any aversion to their real-life use though.
  5. What about the A model vs. the D makes it a hangar queen? My idea of a hangar queen, BTW, is one particular aircraft (not one type, mind you, just one particular aircraft in a squadron full of the same type) that is finicky and breaks down much more then the others. Maybe because its old? Come to think of it, yeah, why offer them As? Imagine offering someone F-16As instead of the newest block of Cs and Ds. Who would seriously consider that offer?
  6. Hmmm...so is FF5 done yet? Can we PLEASE have DCS: Viper now? Pretty please? :D
  7. I didn't think about that. I guess the key difference here is that they have the source code for Falcon, while the guys who made L'Armée de l'Air do not have the source code for LOMAC.
  8. I though I would share this if anyone is interested: http://starwraith3dgames.home.att.net/evochronlegends/index.htm I tried the demo and liked it enough to buy an activation code for the full game. Its a free-form sandbox space flight game with a large fully explorable universe. You can run missions to get money, buy weapons, upgrade your ship, etc. The nice thing is that it supports a controller with many axes and TrackIR! (it has multiplayer too) It's pretty damn good considering that it was developed by one person! And it only takes up about 125 mb installed! Apparently it uses algorithms to build the game world into RAM. The game is part of a multi-part series that I had never even heard of.
  9. RV/FF and OF are all technically not officially authorized. I don't know if you can call this "illegal" but it all boils down to unauthorized overhauls of software by people who do not own the rights to it. I'm still not totally sure of the legality. If I own the software, and I'm not pirating it, I should be allowed to do whatever I want with it. Also, if the FF and RV guys aren't selling their software, I don't see what the problem with it is. Taking legal action against FF and RV would be like ED taking legal action against the makers of L'Armée de l'Air, IMO. However, getting either is a bit of an "under the table" affair. The only place to get them, to my knowledge, is from torrents.
  10. Taken from mvsgas in the thread I linked: This is the long and the short of it. Some other considerations: - Red Viper is FreeFalcon. Version 4, infact. Red Viper is just what they decided to call that version. Red Viper can be installed over Allied Force AND regular Falcon 4.0 - Open Falcon can only be installed over regular Falcon 4.0. - No, if you have Allied Force, you have the finished product. Just patch it up to be current. No other modification required. The only "upgrades" are payware things like HiTiles, Aeyes pits, Stopworks, etc. - As I said, you can refer to you Allied Force manual for an illustrated layout that allows you to program your HOTAS.
  11. Hmm...I've trolled the FreeFalcon forums about Vista and the complaints I've seen are for the 64 bit version. I take it that's what you have? I've see "official" looking posts saying that there are no major issues too. Hmm... Might want to check here: http://www.freefalcon.com/forum/search.php?searchid=58289 To me FF and OF are like little miracles to me. A buggy piece of software running on an OS they weren't intended for. Maybe Vista/7 are the end of the line?
  12. Unfortunately, last time I checked, Frugals requires a non-web based email to register and registering is required for searching. I don't think there are any real "essentials" at this point. Most use OpenFalcon, FreeFalcon (both substantial, third-party upgrades that are not authorized by the current entity who owns the rights to the sim) or they just fly Allied Force. Allied Force is probably as "essential" as you can get. To be honest, and assuming you bought an old copy of Falcon 4.0, I would have probably bought Allied Force first since you're getting a product that can play on XP/Vista right out of the box. You can always upgrade it with payware stuff like HiTiles and cockpits. Personally, I like Red Viper. :) That being said, here's what I have to offer: Here's a good thread from the ED forums: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=30841 If you do some searching, you may find more. For your HOTAS set up, I'm assuming that you have the original Falcon 4.0 and not Allied Force. Allied Force has an excellent section that gives you the keyboard shortcuts for each HOTAS function as they apply to each button. If you don't have Allied Force or you don't want to program, I would check these places for a layout: http://www.freefalcon.com/forum/index.php http://www.f4forums.com/forums/ http://cougar.frugalsworld.com/ The first two links also happen to be the websites for Red Viper(FreeFalcon) and OpenFalcon.
  13. Over what, the moon?! The terrain in some of those pictures looks kinda lunar. :)
  14. Strange that its brought up that many of their MiGs are not flight-worthy and so many immediately seem to be thinking along the lines of "Oh noez! Someone will attack them!" :noexpression: That thought would have never occurred to me. Anyways, I don't think those MiGs falling apart is all that big of a deal. I would think that the majority wouldn't be up to the task of fighting a modern threat even if they were in perfect working order. I don't recall hearing of any massive upgrade programs, so aren't most of them Cold War era 9.12s and 9.13s sporting mostly old R-27s?
  15. At one point the article says that the MiGs are "too old". I don't find that likely. They shouldn't be that old. It seems more likely to be build quality or simply lack of proper care. I would guess the latter. The article says 1/3 of all are unflyable. I wonder how their Su-27s are fairing?
  16. I read these things a few years back. I still think about them from time to time. Thank you for retrieving them so I can read them again.
  17. Dude...you got it all wrong! You make it much too complex. Take it from a real red-blooded AMERICAN male. The world is organized as follows: 1. The US of A! 2. ROTW (a.k.a. everyone else) Fix your map! I can let you borrow the one they passed out to us in grade school if you like.
  18. I know this guy who works in a brewery. I'm gonna ask him if he ever uses plasma stealth to sneak beer out of work.
  19. You might want to re-read what he posted. ;)
  20. There's a lot reasons why that might happen. Without knowing more details about a particular instance, it will be very hard to figure out what happen. Maybe you could give us more details? What are you doing? What is the bandit doing? Where are you in relation to him?
  21. Keepin' the dream alive BUMP
  22. Jesus H Christ...I'm assuming those lower FPS screenies are from Krasnodar? LOMAC is a lost cause when it comes to this. "Oh, I'm sorry, I just wanted to run it with everything maxed in a reasonable sized mission flying over a city that's actually a normal size. Silly me!" I'd like to see what exactly it would take to run it at 30 FPS constantly in every conceivable mission and location. By the time that hardware is around, LOMAC won't even install and play correctly on the OS we'll be running. :noexpression: I'm looking at your build and looking at mine and wondering at what point should one should just decide to turn the water down to medium or turn off AA rather than spending hundreds of dollars. The diminishing returns at this point are insane.
  23. ROFL...that's beautiful. I don't think too many got it unfortunately... :(
