It was interesting to see them strap the Su-33 down on the elevator before lifting it up to the flight deck. Is this how US/UK/France does it? For some reason I never imagined them doing it this way.

Here's a common one, mostly the HUD footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEHJc1pTkHc&feature=PlayList&p=2B07540A51EDB298&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=85

While I want to mostly agree with this, I think this is a pretty interesting concept: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox Sometimes I think we seriously over-estimate the likelihood of what happened here on earth happening elsewhere in the universe. I think it is very possible that intelligent life it is far, far, FAR more rare than what you'd assume it to be. The part I bolded seriously gets me. Multitudes of civilizations should have already come and gone in our galaxy yet...we see nothing tangible that proves it without any doubt.

That second one was really nice! Makes me wish LOMAC actually had some choppy seas instead of just the flat tabletop all the time. ;)

or maybe I meant the ones those nekkid girls dance around.... d'oh  As for the "pass", yeah I understood. I DO find it funny that apparently 5 people took the time to respond to one poll that they didn't take another. :megalol:
-
I took it...I like poles, btw. :) Only thing is...how exactly do you *not pass* that survey? I don't remember being graded on my answers. :smartass:

First privately owned Su-27 Flankers arrive in the US
RedTiger replied to Mustang's topic in Military and Aviation
LOL...wow, here I thought it was just a hobby thing, like a vSquadron but instead using the big boy toys. :idiot: I never got a chance to read the link before it went 404. This is a really good idea though. No F-15s and F-16s with funny paint and big fuselage numbers, its the real deal, warts and all. And the aggressors come to YOU, not the other way around!! -
...some activity on the LOMAC boards again! It's amazing what a little can do! :)

First privately owned Su-27 Flankers arrive in the US

No, but I can fly the Su-27 in LOMAC under that really low bridge near Sevastopol. That has to count for something. -

Well, call me envious! And they stole MY idea! :furious: -
Patch 1.13 Requested Features/Fixes List (*Merged)
RedTiger replied to Colt40Five's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
"Further development" is good news! -
No offense or unfairness was intended to anyone. It is what it is, and it is normal. Perhaps I shouldn't have said "sad".

It's kinda sad how if we hear a US or Russian pilot was killed in the line of duty, we remain silent in a showing of respect. In this case an Indian pilot was killed and we get a thread on human error vs. mechanical failure. :noexpression:

Mig-29S attacks 2 targets simultaneously?
RedTiger replied to topol-m's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Here's something I've wondered; does LOMAC's launched override capability for radar-guided missiles even remotely match what the real FCR is capable of? Override is an invitation into abusing the sim in a very "gamey" way. Overriding an R-27ER goes hand-in-hand with stuff like using the SPO to figure out the exact range of the target, something that common sense tells you the SPO would not be sensitive enough to do. However, AWACS and GCI ARE certainly capable of this and could give a real life pilot the information needed to make a good guess about launch parameters. -
Welcome Mr. Macy! I'm having a read over your website and it's making me re-appreciate how difficult the job of a combat pilot is. Good to have you here sir! :)

Just an observation on my part; if we're talking about AI, while I agree about planes equipped with shorter range missiles, I actually find the ECM equipped planes easier to deal with. Why? Because the AI never turns off ECM and therefore you always know where they are. Even if you have lots of aircraft using ECM, some friendly and some foe, being able to see where everyone is enhances SA. Furthermore, you can lock up the ECM signal and fly right at them and automatically lock them at burn-through. I have my doubts on how realistic this auto-switch from HOJ to lock-on is. To me, the difficulty is greater with non-ECM aircraft. You actually have to -find- them, even if you know what direction they are and their altitude. You still have to find them even if you have them on datalink. For as much talk as there is about how Russian aircraft are more capable than they should be, the MiG-29's radar in LOMAC is pretty weak. You're detection range isn't great and your lock-on range is even worse. And, from my observations at least, all this IS negatively impacted if you're trying to look-down. The radar seems to work a bit better look-up. This is coupled with the fact that you have to manually adjust expected range and move the elevation up and down. Most aircraft will lock you up before you can lock them up. If you're flying the A or if you fly the S with the more realistic payload of 2 R-27s and 4 R-73s, they will fire at you before you can fire at them. Once you do fire, you have two chances to kill them BVR before you will be forced into WVR. They only reason you might be successful a lot of the time vs. the AI is because the AI is stupid and will break lock at the drop of a hat and stay on the defensive. Against human opponents, it would probably be fairly realistic and be just like GG says, you will need superior numbers to win and you will take losses.
-
How about another BUMP! Is this really much better than TIR4? Don't get me wrong, I'd certainly get whatever version is the most up to date if I don't have it. The only real improvement to me would be the field of view. There have been times where I've tried to lean close and look at something in Black Shark and Free Falcon and reached the limit of its detection area.

I would assume that any time a human being starts operating a machine, statistically most accidents are probably going to be caused by the human being. It doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing, it just means that they're human. Humans make mistakes.

You don't turn away from the bandit WVR. This is all BVR. The idea is to avoid the first missile and get well below the bandit. In fact, don't get below them. START below them. Just pretend your look-down, shoot-down ability is non-existent. You're sacrificing the initial shot for the benefit of it being impossible to be notched yourself. Don't misunderstand me when I say "benefit". ;) I initially started doing this when I started to fly the MiG-29A a lot for realism purposes. I didn't want to rely on the look-down capability. The fact that I sacrificed first shot for look-up was just a side-effect. :) In reality, the high, fast flyer with good look down ability has a big advantage. Unfortunately no one told the AI and the Aim-120 flight model this! When you turn back towards the bandit, if you succesfully locate them, start trying to tally them visually at THAT point. Unless you're fighting a Tomcat armed with Aim-54s where notching multiple times is possible, you're only going to get one chance at this notch business. If you can't lock them up and put the heat on in a hurry, run away. Trying to notch a second time is dangerous for all the reasons you and cool t mentioned. Any futher evasion is going to have to be done almost head-on, especially since you want to maintain SA while doding missiles if you inevitably have to merge and duke it out. This is ALL "vs. AI" stuff, btw.

Theoretically, you'd make your ingress point somewhere logical and safe to begin the attack. I like to think of it as where you begin your Death Star trench-run attack, like in Star Wars. :) Its where you turn and line up for your attack run. There's also the egress point after the attack, where you fly to after your "one pass" to proceed to "hauling ass".
-
I can believe it. The tactic strikes me as making a grand assumption that the other guy's look-down ability really sucks. In reality there would also the big "IF" of you avoiding that second AMRAAM once turn back towards the bandit. You'd probably be getting really close the the slammer's NEZ playground if you're really low and he's really high. Fortunately for the LOMAC Su-27 pilot, you don't have to worry about all this! See you in DCS: Eagle! :music_whistling:

Here's a few pointers. I will warn you though, if you practice this a bit, you might lose interest in single player or at least anything but a really hectic mission. I'm not sure how useful this will be in those campaign missions since I haven't played them in a long time. This IS a realistic technique (or so I have read) for Red Force fighters, but it works a little -too- well in LOMAC IMO. The best way to upset with an ARH-armed AI opponent is to notch as soon as the missile is launched. If you aren't familiar with what I'm talking about, once you get locked-up by the bandit, put him on your 3 or 9'oclock and dive. You're trying to get below him while keeping him on your 3 or 9 (aka "beam"). Once you get below him, you'll notice that he'll lose his lock. Grats! You've notched him! If you do it quickly, his ARH missile will go ballistic prior to pitbull and have a near zero chance of finding you. You want to maintain this notch until you think he's close enough to negate ECM. You may have to make small adjustments to maintain it. Now, here's the fun part. If you've got AWACS or GCI datalink and have an idea about his altitude, this is a fairly simple. Otherwise, it is more difficult but not impossible. Adjust your radar's expected distance and expected elevation accordingly and quickly turn back at the bandit. If you're within the "burn through" range, you should be able to find him on your HUD. You should also be within Rmax. Lock him up and fire as soon as you're head-on aspect to him. The AI posses the ability to lock you up instantly the moment you get once inch out of your notch. You'll find that he'd probably fired at you too. What you now must do is maintain your lock and try to defeat that missile. How you do this is up to you. You can do the SPO orthagonal roll deal or stick to realistic evasion tactics. Just keep your lock and SA intact. This is where the AI starts to really suck and show you why its called artificial intelligence. It will always break its lock to try to notch your lock. ALWAYS. Sad...but true, every time, like clock work. (If I could change one thing about LOMAC in a patch 1.13, this would probably be it! *hint* *hint* :D) You must keep the pressure on it to keep it defensive by firing more missiles. As you close, tally the bandit visually, deploy flares and watch for signs of a heater launch. Again, this is a realistic tactic, but the super-sensitivity of the SPO, more modeling of the AMRAAM, and the fact that the bandit will ALWAYS wuss out and go defensive make it far easier than it should be.

Think about it this way too; the lower the profile, the less gun depression possible. Less gun depression means that its harder to get in a hull-down position.
