Do I need 32GB of Memory now?
Fisherman82 replied to joebloggs's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yes it is a wierd question since it indicates that I am the cause of the problem because of the way I designed a mission that worked perfectly fine before on a map that has not changed. It would be fair if it was only for the reworked Caucasus map where a lot of new features has been added as you say. It would at least have some logic. But now I feel its a bit to much, a mission that was playable in 2.1 in Nevada is now unplayable without stripping away very much content that I spent much time creating. Im not so pleased about that since the Nevada map itself has not changed the way Caucasus has. The work around I would prefer is to upgrade my system so that it is playable agan, I can accept that. As a first atempt I changed my gtx 970 for a gtx 1080. That got me much better performance in the way that I can now run free flight missions with max graphics settings. But it had no effect on the issue with my non essential units. I could double my RAM if I want to and get a better CPU and motherboard. If I upgrade my whole computer I dont think I should have to also cut fat to get missions on a map that was anounced feature complete some time ago playable again. Something has to have changed in the way units are handled in the simulation apart from the memory issue, Its like all units demands the same computerpower all the time as if they where active on the screen regardles of if they are visible or not and if they even are activated. Thats a wierd question to ask, Its like asking "do you have to have the world populated at all?". Or "Do you have to have the graphics set to high?" But l will answer it: It depends on how you look at it, obviusly I dont the same way I dont have to play DCS at all if I dont want to. But if im flying in DCS and want to use Nellis as a airport for landing for example I dont think its realistic to land there with the whole base totally abandoned. Nellis has got to have atleast 80 parking spaces if I remember right, having the base half populated is not to demand to much. I can also ask that kind of question: "Do you really need to have the hotels on The Strip in Las Vegas perfectly modeled with high details for low level flying in a combat sim? How often does combat aircraft fly low level over The Strip in real life compared to say, Nellis AFB?" It wont help me understand the problem though. The 40 units at Nellis was an example, it could have been 15 and 5 vehicles, 10 uncontrolled aircraft at Tonopah, 5 civilian aircraft flying around (of which none has been activated) and 5 tents in the middle of the desert. Would that also be to expect to much and pushing the limit to much do you think? This seem to be a very sensitive question since I get a answer like this in return when Im only trying to understand the logic behind how it all works and if this is something that can be fixed with more RAM for example. I don't think I have the described symptoms of the memory issue. I never hit the roof of my 16 gb and I have no crashes. My CPU and GPU is not pushed to their limits either. It does not help to cut preload radius and lowering graphics settings, sure I get more fps due to the reduced settings, but the drop from the existence of units that dont do anything and is not shown on my screen remains in a way that was not present in 1.5 or 2.2. I also have many triggers in the mission, some with continus action that I thought could be demanding and a cause for fps loss. Deleting all of them had no impact at all though, the only thing that helps is to delete units. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk -

Actually it is the same in Nevada for me, in a free flight I get like around 80-90 fps over the desert and perfectly fine around 50-55 fps over Las Vegas. But if im flying over Rachel and have 40 uncontrolled aircraft sitting on the ramp at Nellis I can see a major fps drop, I would say a drop of about 20-25 fps. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk -

The problem is that it is difficult to know what the limits of the sim is for me atleast because it is not written anywere. There are no recomendations as far as I know what the maximum amount of units are in a mission for example and also how different kinds of units affect the performance. Like the maximum number of active units you can have at any one time and how many unactivated. In DCS 1.5 I made some missions that I had no problems with at all but now the framerates in those missions are down to like 25 to 30. Ok, I admit that I have alot of units because I want a "living" atmosphere but I wasnt expecting that 2.5 would behave so different than 1.5 in some aspects. When experimenting with this I have found for example that uncontrolled units very far away cause fps loss aswell as units set for late activation that has not activated yet. I find this a bit strange because I dont understand how the new features in 2.5 can be applicated to that kind of units so the fps goes down. I mean I can see how 20 aircraft in a furball would reduce fps but not how 20 unactivated aircraft can cause the same. Its like 2.5 does a lot more calculations for units that is not doing anything or is not active at all compared to 1.5. I have tried to find someone on the forum that has noted this or can explain it but no one has commented my postings on the matter. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk -

How do you mean the performance goes crap? Do you get very low fps? Im asking because you seem to have the same problem as I have, I have asked about it in other threads in the forum but got no answers. I upgraded from a gtx 970 to a gtx 1080 yesterday, I have got a FX8350 cpu and 16 gb ram. I can now run free flight missions with max settings in Caucasus with 70 fps, but when I run missions I did in 1.5 where I had alot of units like the ones I you are describing I get drops down to 25-30 fps, same as I had on my gtx 970. Im not hitting the roof of my 16 gb ram, are you? I have discovered that even uncontrolled units at the ramp at Nellis causes this eventhough Im flying north of Rachel. Im hoping that it is related to the memory issue that ED is working on and not the CPU so much that I have to upgrade that. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk -
Do US Carriers operate in the Persian Gulf (waterway)?
Fisherman82 replied to Mr_sukebe's topic in Military and Aviation
I don't think its a silly question, I wondered that myself, after some googeling I found this article with a map where USS Eisenhower has sailed through the straits: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6499605.stm -
I asked this in the section for bugs for the release version since I wondered if it was related to the memory issue but I got no answers so I thought I should try again in this section, it is because Im trying to figure out what I may have to upgrade. Im running free flight missions with the Harrier in both Caucasus and Nevada with good frame rates and pretty high graphics settings, totally good enough for me. In Nevada Im flying up in the north above Rachel, pretty far from Nellis. However, if I put many uncontrolled aircraft at the ramp at Nellis my frame rates drop from about 60-70 down to 23-30. Is this because I only have 16 GB RAM or due to my MSI GTX 970 4GB graphics card? I know that the card is below recommended system specs but it seems strange that it should be the cause for the fps drop because the uncontrolled aircraft is very far from where Im flying and is not shown on my screen at any time. Or is it because of that I only have 16 GB RAM, is a mission with many stationary uncontrolled aircraft regarded as a heavy mission and needs 32 GB RAM?

How do you mean that ED have released a update with the memory issue fixed? Did this just happen? (im not with my computer) Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk -
Hello I installed 2.5 release version when it was available, the first thing I did was to see if I could find acceptable graphics settings for my MSI 970 GTX 4GB graphics card that would give me playable framerates. I know that this card is not the newest card, but I was hoping it could be enough since I only use one monitor in 1920x1080. After some tweaking and using the AV8B free flight missions in Caucasus and Nevada I was very pleased to discover that I could run Caucasus at about 50-80 fps and Nevada at about 60-100 over the desert and about 42 over Las Vegas. I had all the sliders to max, used FXAA instead of MSAA and Anisotropic Filtering at 4x, Flat terain shadows, Civ traffic low, High Textures, visibility range Ultra. Defered shading and global ilumination on. I thought that this was prof that my graphics card was sufficient and I thought that the scenery looked spectacular still. However, if i start a mission that is not free flight but has some units in them it is a different story. I have some missions I made myself that has many units in them, when running thease i get about 25-40 fps in both Caucassus and Nevada, the fps fluctuates between these values up and down. Some times I get even lower. I am aware of the so called memory issue that is beeing worked on by ED, are my low fps caused by this? Im asking because I have 16 GB RAM but according to MSI Afterburner "only" 13 Gb is used when I run the missions, Im not hitting the roof. Or am I? I will of course wait for EDs solution before I buy, but would 32 Gb solve my problems? Or is it the GPU still? In both cases with the free flight missions and the ones with many units that I made myself the GPU runs at about max 50-60% and the all 4 GB VRAM is used. Since the free flight missions runs fine it leads me to think that it is not a major problem that all VRAM is used. (I know about the 3,5 Gb issue with this card so I have also tested lowering settings to get it under 3,5 but it does not improve the fps in my own missions). You see, I have tested so I know that uncontrolled aircraft sitting on the ramp at Nellis causes fps loss eventhough im flying the Harrier in the north part of the map above Rachel. Can the GPU really be affected by uncontrolled units so far away? Reducing preload radius and visibility range makes very small gains in fps, the only thing that really works is to delete units. Even units set to late activation that have not spawned yet impacts my fps, this I have also tested so I know its a fact. I have also tried to delete all triggers in the missions as I have heard that many continus action triggers impacts the CPU, deleting all triggers gained no fps though). I also tested the Viggen mission "Mozdok strike" or something like that, I dont think that it is regarded as a "heavy mission" but when I spawn in the cockpit inside the concrete hangar faced inwards so that all that I se on my screen is the cockpit and a concrete texture from i guess DCS 1.2 or something my fps is down to 25. I mean, do I need a 1080 to render this scene? Im not sarcastic I just dont know exactly what requires GPU-power and VRAM, I thought that it was dependant not only to the settings i set but also to what actually is displayed on the screen at any given time. Or is it my CPU? I have a AMD FX with 8 cores at 4 GHz (maybe 4,1 or 4,2, I dont remember Im not at my computer now). DCS is running on all cores, or it is set to all atleast, in reality it runs at 6 if I remember right. CPU load is never above 60 % at any core, most times its lower than that aswell. I have DCS on a 500 GB SSD. I have shadow play off in my Geforce Experience. My problem is not that I have bad performance, it is that I dont know what I must change in my computer to get good performance. Im hoping that it is the memory issue and that it will be solved soon in a update but I dont know.

I have been thinking that the noise from the case-fan in my computer could cause background noise that would cause problems for VAICOM. So if you are using speakers I would think that the microphone picks up sounds from them when you are flying DCS creating a difficult situation for the speech recognition. I would definitly use headphones instead. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk

I can only talk for myself, but I have a Sennheiser GSP headset which is known for a very good mic but I could not get that to work when I had it connected to my onboard audio card or a PCI Asus Xonar card because the input volume was to low for VAICOM to pick up what I said. I bought a small USB Soundcard which I use only for the headset mic and that made a huge difference. Now it works well. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk

Have you tried to say "Awacs request vector to bandit" or for example "Magic request vector to bandit"? Or do you specificly want to say "request bogey dope" instead? Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk

I know that there are several JTAC threads but most are at least a couple of years old so I though I should ask. Which units can mark targets with WP, IR and Laser? The only ones I can get to work are the HMMWV TOW and the Stryker ICV. Other once like Infantry M4 and LAV 25 wont work, I would like them to. Is this the same for all or is it something wierd with my installation? In the old threads I have read that at least the HMMWV Armament and Infantry M4 is capable of marking targets. The manual says all armed units is capable. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk

I also find this unrealistic and should be fixed as DCS is supposed to be a realistic sim. I asked for a fix for this for the Viggen about a year ago, I guess its a ED thing though. What I asked for then was not to have radio commands for all light-settings for your wingmen but simply to have all wingmen in your flight use the same lights as you as flight leader. Kneeboard light for my cockpit, a little help needed
Fisherman82 replied to Fisherman82's topic in Home Cockpits
Thank you, I have thought about that one but I think the other one with the batteries looks better. -
Hello, Im building a simple cockpit and since I use a monitor and not VR I want to have a little kneeboard light inside it. If someone that is good at electronics reads this I could use a little help. I have found a LED booklight that would work pretty well that uses 2 serial connected cr2032 batteries. However I dont want to change the batteries all the time so I would like to convert so that I could connect it to a AC/DC-adaptor. Since the cr2032 batteries are 3V each I should need a adaptor that outputs 6V. I have found one that can output 6V and max 1000mA, Im thinking that this should work however Im not certain. The thing is, I know that normally the important thing when choosing a AC/DC adaptor is that it outputs the right voltage and the same or more amps than the device needs. However I have also read that with LEDs you normally need to limit the voltage AND the amps to not burn it. These two things dont mix in my head, do I need a resistor even though the adaptor outputs the same voltage as the two cr2032 batteries would? Or will the little light only take as many amps as it needs (Because it wont be even near 1000mA).

There was another thread somewere on the forum where there was a disscussion about if the witch-hat was bugged so it was off a few degrees, I dont remember how it ended though. I have not been able to understand if "Hover stop" means the angle where the nozzles are pointing so all thrust is vertically straight down or if it is when they are pointing a bit forward to slow down (stop) into a hover. As far as I know there is no mecanical hover stop that can be set like the STO stop so it cant mean that kind of stop. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk

Mirrors not rendering in the Viggen
Fisherman82 replied to Mitthrawnuruodo's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
Are they not planning to add real mirrors at all at some point? Or are the skybox all we get? That would be a terrible shame for a otherwise good looking cockpit. I would like the option to run the real ones at least. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk -
Me to, but when I try to import it again I get the errors. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk

I tried using this backup tool after Hollywood posted a tip about it. In Windows 10 I get a error message saying that the imported speech engine has errors in the registry and may not work, this causes the microphone setup wizard to crash for example. After a bit of googeling I found out that the backup tool does not support Windows 10. Could be good to know maybe. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk

A tip for the TARGET-problem since this is one of the few things I have not had problems with: In Voiceattack I have the TX buttons mapped to 1-6 on the numpad on the keyboard. I dont have any joystick inputs involved in the settings for Voiceattack and VAICOM. Instead I map the mic switch on the throttle to the keys on the numpad instead. Works perfectly, just remember to map them as Hold instead of Pulse in the TARGET-profile so they remain pressed when you press them. Skickat från min D5503 via Tapatalk

Can anyone explain this? If you look at this picture, can anyone explain whats going on? I do not understand the logic in this software, it seems that sometimes it does not matter if a word is recognized, it will still not be recognized as a keyword in VAICOM. Why is not "Pointer" recognized as a keyword the the first three times I said it? and only the fourth? The minimum confidence level is set at 65 so the three first attempts are above this level. There is no logic in how the software is behaving.
