1:500000 printable DCS/FC2.0 Tactical Chart (WIP)
igormk replied to igormk's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Thanks Focha! I must say I’m very impressed by your very constructive notes on my map, and it is great that we have community members with such knowledge that are ready to share with others. First of all yes, this map is intended to be VFR map for military use, and that is why it have and don’t have some features. Once again I must stress out during my work on the map I was using references primarily from real life TPC type of charts, and some other military maps in different scales. Initially I did want to include a lot of other information, but decided to go with the same level of details used on TPCs, and respecting the fact that the map is in 1:500000 scale. I even did a test with Maykop airport, putting more info on it (like runway length, headings…), but it seemed overloaded for my taste. Then I decided to go with less information, BUT later to make also A5 size Airport Chart for each airport, which will cover all those information. Regarding to MORA (minimum off-route altitude) for each grid, I was thinking to put MEF (Maximum Elevation Figures - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_Elevation_Figure). It is similar, but I think for military flying more suitable. Still, putting coordinates of the highest peak in each grid box would overload the map. It could be more useful for IFR flying, but if someone wants to get coordinates of that point, he can do it easy with the graduated scale lines attached to grid lines. Actually adding more peaks and including MEFs will be very complicated thing to do since I have to do it manually from the game. So imagine “flying” around with free camera and exploring peaks… I have tried to do it following contour lines in the mission editor and comparing the altitude with the altitude showed next to coordinates, but it was too complicated and imprecise. The grids and graduated scale lines are done with a lot of care and the last 4 days I’ve spent on checking coordinate precision on more than 100 locations, and according to those checks I had to do small corrections on the grid in order to minimize the errors. I was also trying to respect real life colors and symbology of the map. That is another reason why I redraw power lines and railroads. I did color the roads in red, but since on this map all roads are present and not only the main roads like on most RL 1:500000s, the map was “funny” looking that way, so I will probably color them back to yellowish-orange. I also have some RL topographic maps where secondary roads are yellow/orange, so it is acceptable way to do it. Regarding to obstacles, only TV and Comm Towers and Sea Oil Rigs will be included here. Everything else (smokestacks etc ) would overload the map, and me. :D Compulsory report points, non-compulsory report points, reference point, VFR transit route, radio-frequencies are things still not developed in DCS and FC2, despite I support the idea. It would be nice to have MP with human air-traffic controllers like we have in FSX for example. Only NDBs are present because they are the only Nav aids in use so far. But you are right, and I will add Morse codes next to each NDB. So, what do you think about my idea not to overload the map with data, but to make additional Airport Charts, later standardized Check lists with conversation tables and things like that. Maybe we can work together on those? Once again Focha, thanks for all your notes! Salute! -
I’m also almost sure that I saw or heard ABRIS dimensions somewhere. I’m not sure was it in the manual or maybe in some of Producer’s Notes videos. Still as Frederf suggested we can use ERBL to measure it and we can double-check it with scaling it to diameters of Exhaust gas temperature indicator or Dual engine RPM indicator which I can find if you want. S!

Any mods for This cockpit color? Pics inside
igormk replied to andysim's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
That is the correct answer. -
Problem solved!!! You guys are amazing, thank you!!!!!! It was something with the sound drivers. I had to uninstall SoundMax driver, and now everything is smooth, no more freezing. I would never guess! And Panzertard, I did read the other posts and used “search” function! :) Just that I forgot to look in Sticky section… I always miss one or two things to do… :glare: So, I promise, in the future I will look in Sticky section before asking questions. ;) Thanks again!!! Salute!

Hi! Recently after many years of using Windows XP I’ve decided to switch to Windows 7. I was quite satisfied with XP, but have heard that 7 is pulling better performances with DCS BS, so I decided to change it. After installation (of course DCS BS was the first thing to try), I loaded a mission (known airport, helicopter is already started, same game settings as before), there I am in the cockpit (game still paused), hit “RCtrl + Pause Break” – WOW!!! If I had 25fps with XP, now I have 40. GREAT!!! OK, let’s try it! I hit “Pause Break”, nothing happens. ????? After 11 seconds of total freezing, game starts. Hmmmm, OK... I pull the collective, helicopter is in stable hover, I press Trimmer button on my stick – freeze again, now for 2 seconds. After the freeze FPSs are back to normal (actually quite high for my machine) 35-50. So the first time I press most of the buttons (ONLY the first time for each button!!!) like trimmer, master arm, release flares, ABRIS button, F2 view…. Game freezes for 1 or 2 seconds, and then continues to run smoothly with high FPSs. Every second press of the individual button doesn’t affect FPS. The other thing I’ve noticed that the freezing is especially long after first time unpausing, and when there is damage made to my helicopter. Then the freezing is longer than 10 seconds. I have tried to burn half of a village, fire and smoke everywhere, it affected only general FPS, but no freezing. I’ve reduced game settings to minimum, but despite that general FPS are higher, the freezing is still there. I did search the forums, but didn’t find some similar complaints. Any idea what could it be? Any help is appreciated. Oh, I almost forgot – I have AMD Athlon Dual Core 5800+, 3GB RAM and ATI Radeon 3650 (no over cloaking). LOFC2 is running completely smooth, without such problems. Thanks!

1:500000 printable DCS/FC2.0 Tactical Chart (WIP)
igormk replied to igormk's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Since there was a long time since my last update of how are the things with the map going, I want to give you few information regarding to the progress of the map. When I printed a small segment of the map to see how it would look like, I discovered a problem because roads, bridges, power-lines and railroads were so thin that were hardly visible. Having in mind that they are important references I’ve decided to redraw them completely, and it took SOME of my time to do it. Maybe it looks easy, but let me just say that there are more than 1300 bridges on the map, and don’t even let me start talking about roads… so it was very time-consuming. Now it is finished, and I’m sending you a segment to see the result. As you can see, power lines and railroads have new symbology now. In the mean time (while waiting for the confirmation of MGRS grid precision) I plan to add antennas (which I will have to search visually), add many more altitudes of peaks, and few more things in the legend, and of course, to make a cover for the folded map. So if everything goes as planned, I hope that the map will be finished in max 2 weeks from now. I’m sending you also low res picture of roads and bridges layer only. See, there are more of them than you can imagine!:D Salute! Sample: Bridges: Roads: -
Trying to understand AI pilot limitations.
igormk replied to AKA_Clutter's topic in User Created Missions General
AKA_Clutter, The problem might be the one Grimes suggested, but it can also be the way you did set waypoints on the approach to the FARP. I did have some similar problems, and to solve them, I had to play with the waypoints and their parameters. What I’m trying to say is that you must do it (let’s say) like this: WP1 (on route): 200km/h, 100m WP2 (some 200m before FARP): 100km/h, 50m WP3 (30m before FARP): 40km/h, 20m WP4 (10m before FARP): 20km/h, 10m WP5 (5m before FARP): 5km/h, 6m WP6 (5m after FARP): 200km/h, 100m Here I must warn you that this might not work instantly, but if you see some improvement, try changing a bit some of those speeds and alts till you have the result. If you go only with WP1, WP5 and WP6, the helicopter will not be able to achieve requested parameters and you will not get the result you wish. Salute! -
Yes, that is why DCS is so big. You can expect the unexpected, even when it shouldn’t be expected. :D 1. I understand you because I should consider upgrading my PC too ;). 2.OK, I did encounter the same problem, but I adapted my position according to visual scanning and reports from my wingman that missiles are launched. I will change the position so it’s more easier for the users. 3.No problem on that one – it will be enlarged. 4.That is already fixed. 5. & 6. I will have to blame AI on those. It was not my intention to do it like that just to look impressive. Both Su-25Ts and Su-34s are acting very weird. It doesn’t matter where you put their IP, or altitude, they will come close and low risking their life (and loosing it). Results vary on each attempt, but maybe I should consider reducing the number of those ZU-23s and MANPADs. This way we will get few FPS too. 8.Cool! I will see your track file as soon as possible. Sounds exciting. Actually I’m not sure is it normal, but often I have more fun and excitement when watching other people’s tracks, than flying myself. 9. As you probably noticed, fighter escort was wiped out. Maybe you could even see su-27 falling down from the sky when US entered the battle, so it would take time to scramble another fighters. You will have to escape without help! ;) I did it in my second attempt. My tactic was to go NOE direct to Ozurgeti airfield. I even saw couple of missiles hitting the ground around me, but I was probably too low, so they couldn’t hit me. When you get closer to the airfield, AD will start working those F-15s, so you are safe. 10. Yes, that was the idea, despite that I’m not sure it is realistic, since I’ve never experienced such thing IRL. I’m glad you liked the effect. Huh! AI issue again. Or revenge over the Ka-50s as you said. :)

1:500000 printable DCS/FC2.0 Tactical Chart (WIP)
igormk replied to igormk's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Patience, patience guys! :) I’m intensively working on it. Now I’m redrawing all the roads since they are important visual reference and hardly visible when printed. You can just imagine how slow and boring process it is! I think that I’ve draw at least 40000km in last couple of days. :bored: After that I’m thinking on redrawing power-lines and railroads, possibly bridges too. Beside that I’m still waiting for confirmation of precision of the MGRS grid, and testing geodetic grid precision on many positions on the map. Good news is that I’m on vacation from Monday so I will have plenty of time to “have fun” with redrawing and stuff like that. ;) Still I’m very happy that your support for this project is HUGE so thank you all!!! Great news  Oh, I still have couple of things to do! ;) -
Hey slug88, long time no hear!!! :) I was also away for couple of weeks, so sorry for the late reply. Thank you once again for your detailed comments on the campaign. The project “Georgian Havoc v1.1” is very much alive, of course. It is just that while waiting for feedback on last couple of missions, I decided to take a rest from mission editing, so I switched to another project. It is 1:500000 printable Tactical Chart, you can find it here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=50869 and here another thing connected to it: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=51163 It turned out to maybe something bigger, so now my priorities are on this project. After I finish it (and hopefully get more feedback on the last mission), I will get back and finish v1.1. Regarding to your last spoilers: 1. Yes, if you know how to operate Ka-50 nav and targeting systems. :D 2. Usually when on combat mission, you want to keep frequencies clear as much as possible. You would also be in combat spread, and not in close formation, so announcing every move is not essential. 3. Hmmmm, good point, I will try to manage that! 4. Realistically, if you are tasked to another mission, you would probably get new working frequency. I know it is immersive to have a lot of comms in the background, and maybe it should be solved in another way. I will think about that. Thank you once again for your patience spent on finding spoilers of this campaign! Looking forward to hear more from you!!! Salute!

1:500000 printable DCS/FC2.0 Tactical Chart (WIP)

Well, I see you point, but I think it would be easier for the user to have “small” (like A5) Airport Charts for each airport, then to have to flip 140x110cm map. S! -
1:500000 printable DCS/FC2.0 Tactical Chart (WIP)
igormk replied to igormk's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
BaD CrC, the NDBs are there from the beginning. Individual (let’s say) beacons are marked with position, name, frequency and call sign, while Instrumental Approach NDBs are just marked on the map, without any data, but in the left bottom corner of the map, there is a table with type, frequency and call sign. So if you want to find the info of let’s say outer NDB for runway 23L on Krasnodar-Pashkovsky airport, just look in the table. The reason for this kind of approach is because I didn’t want to overload the map. I was also thinking to add Morse Codes symbols for each NDB in the table. Yes, if we manage to get them. :) Pyroflash I absolutely support you with this idea, but I think it would overload the map with data. Actually I was planning to make “Jeppesen-style” Airport Charts for the 16 airports we have in BS and FC2.0. So, NOTHING fancy, just like IRL. And yes, if you can provide additional information, like taxiway names, parking position numbers, etc. it would be great, and I think usefull. These charts can then easily be printed on A5 size in B&W, and put in your kneeboard, together with your other check-lists. Let’s think about this, but after the final version of the map is released. -

1:500000 printable DCS/FC2.0 Tactical Chart (WIP)
igormk replied to igormk's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Not just GG and KM, the whole vertical “G” and “K” sectors are smaller. It is because there is change of UTM/MGRS Grid Zone Designation from 37T to 38T on 42E meridian. You can find more on this here, and you can check that it is the same on the real life TPC on this example. I have asked ED to check (if possible) precision of the MGRS grid on A-10C, but didn’t get any confirmation or denial so far. -

Now, * * * * * I M P O R T A N T * * * * * * ED is thinking on the possibility of supporting this map and in this case the map will be officially published! In the meantime we are trying to find a way of providing me with that additional info (antennas, industrial complexes locations), so I can put them on the map, and we are searching for errors and bugs. What I need from you is to hear what else they would like to see on it. Things like bullseye, compass rose, some extra objects… yes or no? Be free to be detailed and as explicit as possible when suggesting things. I will be away for next two weeks (starting from Sunday), so I think that will be enough time to hear all your ideas and wishes. After that I will try to finish it, and release it ASAP. Salute! -

Yes, exactly. Sorry, but this map is made from screenshots from the mission editor. I don’t know would that make any difference, but my initial plan was to make it from .cdds files, but soon after I started organizing my work in that direction, I found out that the terrain is divided on layers (ground, water surfaces, roads, populated areas, vegetation…) and I was not able to find a way to join them together. Most I can provide is CorelDraw version of the map, so you will have unlimited resolution on lines and texts. :D -

igormk replied to igormk's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Hey, once again thanks for the support! I will consider .png format (which is ~130MB) if it provides a better quality. Garfieldo and Brit_Radar_Dude, off course that your information are of great help. Still I’m hoping that there is a way to find precise info of locations of those objects (something like .lua file with their coordinates). If not, I will consider other options. NDBs from Beacons.lua are already on the map. Crunch, I see your point, and I think you are right because most of the MP missions you can find on servers today are, let’s say, preplanned. So it depends on in which direction we will develop MP missions after FC2.0 and next DCS modules. I think we would add realism, fun and excitement if we put more accent on A-FACs and scouts and on-alert strikers and fighters. In that case if you are striker called in an area which you didn’t have enough time to study, I believe it would be very helpful to have few extra references on the map. After all, once again, if we get precise info of those objects, I will try to put them on the map. If it’s overloading it, then I can take them out. We will see. It is also good idea to have a “full-screen” version of the map for general orientation using alt+tab. Soon as I finish this one I will consider making one. Great JimMack! PM incoming! I think that a simulator like DCS BS deserves to have hard copy map. Let’s do it! :pilotfly: -

Thanks Wags!:) Is it possible that someone from ED could help me on how to find locations of all Comms Towers (Maykop’s “Mayak” is already in), TV Towers, Factories and Oil Platforms? Plus if there will be something new and specific for FC2.0 and DCS A-10C that could be included in this chart. ;) Thanks! -
1:500000 printable DCS/FC2.0 Tactical Chart (WIP)
igormk replied to igormk's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Thank you all for the support! Here is a test of how precise the chart is. I took the dam on the Inguri lake as a reference point. On the upper section there is a SS from Google Earth. According to Google Earth, the middle of the dam is 42 45’ 29’’N; 42 01’ 52’’E. In the middle section I’ve took out coordinates of the same point from my TC-1 chart. They are 42 45’ 25’’N; 42 02’ 50’’E. That means that there is 1.34km difference between Google Earth and TC-1 (at this particular point). But it is more important how big is the difference between DCS and TC-1. So in the lower section there is a SS of a helicopter landed on the middle of the dam. Then I scrolled the marker on the ABRIS to the coordinates taken from TC-1 (42 45’ 25’’N; 42 02’ 50’’E) and you can read on the ABRIS that the difference is 0.31km, which on 1:500000 scale chart should be 0.62mm, and I think that is acceptable error. The chart itself if printed to match 1:500000 scale should be 140x110cm :) That is quite huge, and (when I was already near finishing it) I asked around printing offices to find out that 1m2 of color printing is 15-20EUR, so this map should cost 25-30EUR just to print it. I’m planning to post just a .jpg file of the chart when is completely done. JPG itself is 55MB. Chart is made in CorelDraw, and I didn’t consider posting .CDR file, but if someone wants it, he can send me PM, and we will try to work it out. I hope to finish it these days, soon as I get info how to find those antennas, factories and oil platforms. I would really like to include them on the chart, since I think they would be very important. Also I would like to leave some time for you to find possible errors, and maybe some good suggestion will come up. GhostDog, thank you! It is corrected. This is exactly what I’m talking about! Keep finding things like that, I would be embarrassed to release the final version with such errors. -
EDIT/UPDATE 11.06.2010: Since I started the work on the map (see the original first post below this update) till the final version there has been a lot of work. You can find the list of upgrades/changes since the beginning in the next two posts: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?...0&postcount=98 http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?...&postcount=132 The final version of the map is available for purchase here: http://fighter-collection.com/pages/tfc/flight%20simulation/index.php and for download in high resolution png file here: http://www.mediafire.com/?gyj44wnmdiz Very useful additional information on how to laminate and use the map here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=923030&postcount=1 THE ORIGINAL FIRST POST \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ Recently I’ve started working on printable 1:500000 scale chart that is covering DCS and FC2 area. My plan is to print it and cover it with plastic foil so you can draw and write on it with marker which is then easy erasable with alcohol. I was inspired by the announced integration of both DCS and FC in multiplayer with FC2.0. Then I imagined how it would be like to fly in a co-op mission where you have real guys flying fighters, strikers and attack helicopters. Imagine having a pair of Ka-50s flying scout role on the front line, and having flight of Su-25Ts or A-10s waiting on strip alert to be called in. Fighters are providing cover all the time. And if you are in that Ka-50 and you spot a large enemy armor formation coming towards our borders, how would you call those strikers? In Ka-50, and (hopefully soon) in A-10C you have GNSS, INS, moving map, so you can be very precise with locating the enemy’s position. But how to pass the information to those strikers which doesn’t have any of those NAV devices. And possibly they have predetermined flight route that they can’t change in flight. And if you go with “Large group coming in from east, just passing north of Bagdati”, it is question how many of us know the terrain so well that they would know where to go. And even if you know where Bagdati is, would you be able to find it visually if you take off from Sukhumi, and you have to fly low level due to enemy fighters and AD. Therefore I made this chart in order to eliminate that DCS/FC “navigational” gap. Now if you are Su-25T pilot waiting for call, and you receive coordinates from scout Ka-50s, you can easily draw your target’s location on the printed chart, and if you have predetermined route loaded in your NAV system, just look for your closest WP, measure heading and distance from it, and it will be easy to navigate to the target area. Off course, this is all applicable for servers that have disabled map and external views. The chart itself is made of large number of screenshots, all joined together. I have tried to represent the Earth’s curve as it is IRL. Then I added Geodetic and MGRS grids. MGRS system is not checked for precision! I have decided to include it because I believe it will be present in DCS A-10C. Practically, this chart is a representation of real life TPCs (example). I didn’t try to invent anything. There are just few things that are different here with the real life TPC. Then I added cities, villages, airports, NDBs, peaks, borders, river names, lake names… the result is here. I'm attaching lower resolution version here ~4000x3100pixels. If you think it would be good to have this chart, after I finish it I will attach full version (~16000x12000pixels). 500k low res (~6MB) What I want to add on the chart are some good visual reference objects (for better orientation) like: -Comms Towers -TV Towers -Large factory complexes outside of the cities -Oil platforms The problem is that I don’t know how to find all of them. Maybe there is some file that have list of all of those objects with their coordinates, but I’m not sure. So, if someone knows where or how to find them, I would be very grateful. And it would be nice if someone could double-check precision of the Geodetic grid. I have tried on several locations on different places of the chart, and I think it is very precise. Just be aware that chart is made relative to coordinates IN game, not in the ME. I’m open for any suggestions. S!
