  1. the official beta versions (still in beta if you ask me) worked better on 64-bit windows than 32-bit. Of course there was a difference of 3 gigs of RAM, since after obtaining 4 gigs of memory I was being lazy with the installation of 64-bit windows. Full 6 gigs made the game less prone for CTD due to graphical issues.
  2. In late 2008 I posted this setup involving EEE PC 901: Yesterday I hooked this up: Took a while to get around and buy a small screen (find a cheap one that is). It's also touchscreen, should I ever need the feature.
  3. I don't. There's many pages of bla bla bla with little content. So this is a welcome thread. I don't have time to every day go through lenghty threads in several forums looking for something I need, just because it might come today. This is not the only game which has problem with people forcing people to continue enormous threads of inconclusive bla bla bla with posts of significant value and I sometimes keep missing things because of the mentality. One thread unrelated to games, which has some interesting stuff every now and then, is just 500 pages long and grows by the hour. Whenever someone creates a new thread there's a bunch of people telling "WHY DIDN'T YOU USE THE EXISTING THREAD!?". God. Looking for content afterwards with search function is practically impossible.
  4. Toggle on all the AP modes except altitude hold and then toggle on the FD. Trim your chopper to keep pitch and bank level with the (artificial! you don't want to level with the top of a mountain in front of you) horizont. Keep some forward motion and gently descend towards the landing platform, but be cautious of the vortex ring state. There's no hurry, just keep it steady and going forward while eliminating any side slip. Try to keep control inputs to minimum especially closer to the ground and platform so you don't enter into pilot induced oscillation. Remember to keep it trimmed so you don't have to fight the controls, especially try to avoid fightning banking inputs which could lead to side slip - pitch is easier to keep in check. Try to keep in forward motion until you flare for landing, adjust the speed so that you have time to adjust your position sideways. It's much easier if you don't have to adjust by reversing. Look out from the left side window for the platform when you get to it and make small corrections by side slip - remember to not enter into pilot induced oscillation. If you get too much side slip, correct it gently and when you're steady again then re-adjust your position over the platform. When entering above the platform you should be leveled just above it so that you don't have to mind the vertical position when adjusting your position for landing (though, keep enough altitude to safely pass over any vehicles near by). Just before touching down you should slow down to a halt, although very little forward or backward movement doesn't matter, but any side slip will be a bit nasty. Don't idle the throttle at once, but put it down by gently decreasing throttle until you touch the ground and then slowly decrease throttle to idle. Remember to use your brakes so you don't roll over the platform. Trimming the stick slightly backwards once throttle is at idle will reduce the forward motion (assuming that before touchdown you had trimmed the chopper to nearly hover). When approaching your altitude curve should resemble a downwards curve that at first goes down rapidly and then levels off for a bit at the end before touching down.

  6. In aviation they tend to use knots exclusively under the imperial system, instead of mph. 1 kt = ~1,85 kph and 1 kph = ~0,54 kt.
  7. And which also depends on the altitude due to thinner air. The error is roughly 5 kt per 1000ft or 9km/h per 300m. At 3000m the disparency between ground speed and indicated air speed is about 90km/h.
  8. Nowadays they're pretty much changing the combat style to hit & run instead of hiding behind cover to pop up & fire. This is where fire and forget missile comes very useful along with a separate gunner who has the time to fix on target quickly before hightailing away from the area. Sitting target is always a sitting target and vulnerable to even smallarms.
  9. I plugged it to 100 Mbit LAN and created a virtual monitor with Zeroscreen program which transfers the display over the LAN to the EEE. It'd be better over gigabit lan, but my EEE only goes up to 100 Mbit (WLAN supposedly could achieve 300 Mbit, but alas my router doesn't). It seems a bit inefficient program though. 6 frames per second eats up all of the bandwidth. I'm yet to try Maxivista (payware) if it's more efficient as in theory it should be possible to achieve at least 10 fps without a problem. At least in their demo the desktop windows are moving much smoother between the screens than with Zeroscreen. I've been looking for 7 to 10 inch screens with DVI/VGA connection, but I'm yet to find anything under 300 - for which I'll rather buy a big screen. Maybe I'll look for bridged USB connection between the computers - if USB2 is any close to the promises it should be fast enough.

Thanks for the instructions in this thread to set up different screens :) Today I was wondering how nice it'd be to have a small screen below my main monitor for Shkval, so I wouldn't have to look to the sides for it, but a bit more realistically downwards to it (not to mention that the cockpit view stays forward with TIR). Then I figured out that I have Asus EEE PC 901 to test with, which seems to have just a nicely sized screen for Shkval. Setup with minilaptop I think I'll turn to use it's keyboard for those few functions that I haven't mapped to the HOTAS. Smaller keyboard is better for one hand.
  12. Wow, from whopping 2km. In the earlier post where I couldn't whack a fuel truck with 26 rockets I was closing in on it very slowly, but rockets usually missed all around it - sometimes one rocket came short and the other flew over. From 2.5km I got a truck when I was hovering still and targeting MTLB - I only had to do mild adjustments to heading. I don't get it how you'll get a whole convoy from 2km :o
  13. Yeah, that's pretty much the problem - no enemy concentrations to shoot rockets at. Good against buildings though, but rarely needs to target buildings (once in the campaign). Gun works good with one or two hits and is precise :)
  14. Gah, rockets are as good as paper weights! Just returned from a mission where I couldn't ignite a fuel truck(!) with 26 rockets from 2 to 0,8km (most at close range). The 14 other rockets managed to blow up a truck at 2,5km when aiming for an APC :) The spread is quite awful. Did they forget to include stabilizing pins on the rockets at the factory? :noexpression:
  15. Dynamic campaign doesn't mean you have to let the pilot to know what's going on all around the front. It means there's more dynamic elements to the war. Pilots do know where the frontline goes though, the safe area that is, which moves from time to time. In dynamic campaigns I just love to see how the front lives and if I did anything to stop a breach of a fast moving group of tanks trying to encircle friendly positions.

  17. BS has more realistic behaviour and more systems modelled with more detail. However it does miss A2A weapons (that should exist) and a campaign system similar to LB2, which is only found in Falcon 4 besides it. The lack of truly dynamic campaign has ever since LB2 (and F4) been my main grief with the games. The war just doesn't feel the same. Otherwise BS is the combat chopper simulation of the day. And I was too weak of a fool who couldn't resists getting the game with the cursed SF instead of waiting for the Steam version. Fortunately SF does not install drivers for this like it does with the CD/DVD version of games. On the other hand, Steam is ripping off us europeans by converting the price of a product from dollar to euro simply by changing the currency mark; $40 -> 40€ ($55), a rip off.
  18. I haven't got that far in familiriazation of the systems, but so far I know that there are two selectable laser codes A and B, which I suppose is related to the utilization of 3rd party lasers. The third I guess must be either "off" or "onboard laser" select.
  19. What does this have to do with open source? Anyone can write a software of their likings to use (or abuse, as you see it) the NaturalPoint API and share it for free, but they don't have to release the source code, therefore not making it an issue about the open source. The thread is about: 1) Being able to use TIR1/2 and non-naturalpoint technology with Black Shark. 2) Whether it is legit lawfully or morally to use the NaturalPoint API by a third party software (this discussion is not only about Freetrack). Open source is totally unrelated to the point of discussion and is only related to how the most potent alternative software is made available. Nowhere is said that a software must or should be open source. What comes to the legal side of it, the link in the first post, which I only now checked out, appears to include the section of law which dictates that the API cannot be used to create monopoly. You may be able to restrict the use of API by encryption and such, but you cannot tell others to stop using it should they figure out how to do it.

You can stand on whatever opinion you want, but I'm in this to point out to the others that your opinion is wrong and is not in the best interest of the gamers and the development may in fact become stagnant due to lack of pressure from competition. That's how Nvidia, AMD and ATI became big makers in the market of their area of expertise - the giants before them had it too comfortable and neglected the development of new technology, which gave space for the new, innovative, companies. Alas, even innovative companies can eventually become the victims of their own success, as has happened to many companies before them. This day NaturalPoint itself is the worst enemy of the company - they're no longer innovative in the true sense of it and instead resort to limit the markets like so many other failed market leaders have done before. Calling it stealing will not change the fact that the company is about to tumble downhill if they continue to neglect the best interest of the consumers. Should they continue their current policy there will be a serious competitor before soon and it will cut their markets worse than the so called stealing. I see no reason why the history wouldn't repeat itself once again. Everything is proceeding just like so many times before.
  21. NaturalPoint with TrackIR was the first one to commercialize the concept and the technology. There concept already existed and there were crude stuff for it; not that the first TrackIR was anything more than crude compared to the 4th generation. What I see is the problem is that NaturalPoint is pursuing for monopoly. They don't leave much space for competitors by disallowing the use of the only tracking API built into the games. Until I heard about these news I thought that the point of NaturalPoint was to sell advanced technology to offer more precise controls et al than with the improvised webcam stuff. That's quite illogical. Apparently there is already at least one potential alternative, who most likely also has the potential to write an API for games to support their software. However as is the NP is the only one providing API to the publishers and therefore Freetrack is using it. Not all publishers/developers agree to use the NP's API. Microsoft for one wrote their own API for Flight Simulator X, which is called SimConnect, or something like that. So it's free game for NaturalPoint, Freetrack and whoever else wants to write software benefitting from it. That's how it should be, not restricted to just one company with the aim of monopoly over the tracking technology - so much that they even remove support from the users of older TIR generations in order to boost their sales. This is not about who wrote the API and therefore has the rights to collect funds for it's development, but who has the control of the market. A friend of mine told me that NaturalPoint doesn't even have legal grounds to stop the use of their API from competition. Their only legal weapon is to make the court expenses so high that most competition willingly gives up when threatened, even though the competition is on the right side of the law and would not lose the case. I don't know for sure myself, but this guy knows quite a bit about this kind of stuff. Is it right for the NP to close out the competition from using Black Shark? As a customer I want to choose which company's tracking technology I want to use or whether I want to try my own. I'm sure there are people willing to write their own API (like Microsoft did), but will it be implemented in the BS so that anyone can use it with their hardware? I doubt that now that it's already implemented into the game. I think the NP is highly exaggerating the costs gone to develop the API used in BS. If they want to keep on the top then they should concentrate on making quality products rather than limit the market artificially. Ps. I'm user of TIR 3 Pro with vector expansion, so let's not say anything about me being a bad person stealing from the NP or such. Though, as long as the NP insists on restricting the market artificially I will not be buying an another product from them.
  22. Canister rounds have a limited range and armor piercing capability. It's basically a shotgun with 120mm barrel - highly effective against uncovered soft skinned targets at closer range. Though, choppers will be flying too far and the ones begging to be shot at usually have armour to withstand the pellets at any realistic engagement range.

I've got 8 medals in a week and promoted to captain :o Courage Order Medal of Courage Nesterov Medal Military Serve Order Georgy Cross-IV Medal for Merit to Fatherland-II with swords Georgy Cross-I Hero Gold Star They just keep popping. This is after 509 A-G kills and 6 A-A kills, with total flight time of 30 hours. I just keep killing everything until I have no more ammo. Sometimes I might go and grab more, if mission doesn't appear to be finished.

I missed the receipt in that case :( I found the key alright after that, but afterwards I've began to wonder if there was a receipt and whether it contains purchase ID or such, that could become useful at some undetermined point in the future and that wouldn't be nice if I'd be missing such a crucial part of my purchase. I hope I won't have any problem resetting the activation limits due to the missing email if I ever come to that?
