  1. real question is, what resolution are you running in?
  2. Im not sure if this is bug, however I recently noticed that all the 14 skins i have are defaulting the wing pylons and underbelly pylons with the generic weathered gray. What would change this? I dont really dive around files too much, with the exception of changing the name of the skin so its in order in game, using notepad. noticed it today
  3. 15 NM is way too close for TWS. you can find them with your pilot radar mode (left to right, top to bottom scan pattern). with a high closure rate, you can launch at somebody at 40 nm(TWS). if they dodge it, you should be at the 15 nm mark for the next shot, when they are defensive. use your camera when you lock on to the target, so you can watch. 10 miles or less, flip ACM switch up and phoenix is pitbull off the rails. and that goes without saying if its a single target, use STT. if you can keep an STT lock on a target at distance, you can get another 15 miles out of your missile. there are alot of varibales that increase/decrease your chances of getting distance kills. its extremely valuable for the sheer fact that it will put them in a defensive state when you have the ability to STT and hit them with a close range phoenix, which is pretty deadly if used correctly at short ranges. when i launch i like to start decreasing altitude , nose on targets so i can keep them in the radars zone until they go pitbull. at that point, STT the first target allows you to prioritize on who to go after if the missiles miss.
  4. @gunslinger22 This looks amazing. look forward to seeing what else you have coming. great job
  5. when this is happening, look at the little window under the parking brake lever to see where the lines are for the trim. it takes a bit to get it to go up and down on that instrument. also if your wings are not in auto , sweeping the wings at low speed then bringing them back out will cause lift that is hard to counter act with trim cause your speed is prob too low. when you take off from carrier make sure you put your flaps down, wait a sec and then adjust the trim to no more than 2 or 3, or your gonna have a violent pitch up on take off. when you set the wings to bomb mode at lower speeds then hit auto, thats going to cause a pitch that cant be countered by trim because of your speed. you have to speed up and trim down. like everyone else said, alot of things can factor into this
  6. i primarily fly the f-14. if you are good about managing fuel flow and gravity for speed rather than thrust, you can stay up for 2 hours at least. full afterburner and your done in 3 minutes. its up the operator and how he controls the throttle. most airframes are going to be like this. dont know specifics about the 17, but i always found the 18 to be fuel effiecent. i also dont use afterburner except when needed so i can increase my time on station. altitude, ferry distance, engagement throttle management, etc are all going to be big factors in how fast you loose fuel or how long you have before you hit bingo. also know where you plan to RTB, and you are going to be lighter when you set that limit. have fun!
  7. map the hud brightness and TV screen brightness to be able to map those. Night flying is great, just spend alot of time adjusting these parameters to match the AO im working in. lot of lights on the ground, gotta adjust the HUD and NVG gain so the green is bit different than the green hue from ground lights. working over water, change it around a bit to get a better picture of surface. small prob but would be helpful
  8. cool. dont forget your bathing suits!
  9. yeah, tell me about it. I prefer to have somebody who wants to RIO as a number 1 task. Have a few guys in my sqaudron that are good with RIO work, but they rarely fly RIO because they want to fly other frames. It would be awesome to build a consistant repitition with somebody who takes pride in the number 2 seat like i take pride in the 1 seat. to me that means learning the ins and outs of the systems and how to utilize them efficiently. not just a button pusher. one can dream haha. :music_whistling:
  10. yeah, i can see that happening. possibly try adjusting the speed? takes less head movement to give you more movement on screen. when i do dogfighting practice, i adjust the speed higher so im not throwing my head all over the place. sure my fiance loves watching me with my headphones on throwing my head all over the place lol
  11. F9 Freezes it in place, orange light shows up. hit it again and it comes back to life. The recenter could be helpful, i think i saw something in track IR to make it mapped to a button. IIRC, i think f12 re-centers. but dont take my word for it
  12. yeah, the basic carrier is already in game. you wont have to do anything special, it will be in alot of the training missions. as far as user created training content, there is plenty around the web. apparently the 18 is suppose to open a door to have a "discount" for the super carrier, but havent heard much news lately. the f-14 is working on a Forrestal class carrier. also has been pretty quiet about that one, prob coming in the next few months. the detail on carrier isnt very bad as is. in mission editor, you can edit and add planes(static) to give the carrier a real life sorta feel, or you can keep it clean and empty. the super carrier is really suppose to step it up a notch for carrier related stuff with animated deck crew and the works. that is gonna be the one that costs money, but it looks like it will be a good investment if carrier work is your cup of tea.
  13. the supercarrier will be an add on, but right now the carrier is unlocked in game as well as other ships and such. have really enjoyed making a packed deck, with just enough room to navigate around. great for pics. im a huge fan of Naval aviation. like the AF as well, but i just enjoy carrier style sort of flying. the tomcat with A2A strength, good bombing, and the 18 getting finished up, able to do so much stuff i sadly dont know it like i should. I understand the family and kids sorta thing, im sure you will find time. who knows, maybe inspire one of the youngsters to follow the aviation route! and my first post, i wasnt talking about DCS, but real life, the transition from f-14 and a-6 and kinda combining them for the hornet to start doing alot of the work that was needed at that period. really are great modules, and alot of detail.
  14. yeah, stennis is already in game. if thats the case with budget, hornet could use some love haha. hornet might be a good one right outta the box. you will always be able to upgrade setup etc, now i know the cat like i do, i would have a hard time with no pedals. hornet and PG wont let you down one bit. id say learn to make missions with mission editor. sure there are missions that can be downloaded for the 18 as well.
  15. I agree, this would be a absolutely great region, IMO.
  16. hey bud! congrats on the new build! good feeling! I will say out of the two maps, Persian Gulf will prob be more fulfilling at the beginning of your DCS career. Nevada is great, but not much action here on multiplayer side. I love Both maps, but i like to use Nevada for single player training purposes, kinda like what the area is used for in real life. pretty cool to imagine how much aircraft science has been produced and tested in this small area of the US. PG will allow you to work on carrier work, a desert theme, and alot of water. Navy tactics differ slightly, and this is one place you can get comfortable using them. for the plane, im a F-14 all day sort of guy. I have the 18, and really enjoy it quite a bit. something about the 14 though speaks to me, and ive bonded pretty well with it. as for your first one, i personally would say 14. teaches how to fly and operate an airframe, easier systems to grasp and learn, and quirks that were left behind when the developed the 18. one was the predecessor to the other, and i think its cool to learn the first model before getting the 2nd one. your able to see how the design and engineering helped to take load off the pilot and turn the RIO into a computer in the 18. both are awesome IMO, but if your interest is in Navy and carrier ops, both will be essential at some point. thats just my opinion. do you have a Hotas? rudders will be pretty helpful for a 14, if you want to squeeze everything out of the frame. 18 doesnt really need rudders, but it helps at a few points in crazy maneuvering, or on windy landings. whatever you choose, you wont be let down. im part of a sqaudron, 40th SOC, and we have alot of guys that would be very helpful in the navy department, myself included. http://www.40thsoc.org BTW, we are almost Neighbors. Im in NC. welcome aboard my friend
  17. LSO is gonna have a boner watching that 3 wire. lol
  18. the datalink is a feed to your aircraft, from another radar. awacs and carrier can supply the feed. but they also have to acquire the target. Stennis is going to have a hard time datalinking a picture to you if the bandits are cold or beaming, behind a mountain range or whatever. same with AWACS. the biggest issue i see with AWACS is it doesnt follow the blue front. hoggit georgia at war and alot of the other servers set the awacs in optimal spots for the beginning of the progressive mission, but as the sides continue to work further away from awacs, you lose alot of feed. the specific issues like how you designed the mission and all that, im not sure. but the natural barriers in the maps seem to dissuade the datalink from successfully picking stuff up sometimes. its not a satellite image, its just sharing with you the information it is picking up, which sometimes isnt very much. awacs 250 NM from the action, with mountain ranges in between tend to let things fall thru the cracks. venturing far away from the mothership decreases odds of survival if you use the DL to help acquire targets, which i do quite a bit. the stennis looking over open ocean, with a e-3 or hawkeye towards the front usually covers most of flat, open ocean. once you hit the first mountain range though, be wary. also have noticed alot of AI behavior recently doing a good job of radar masking. they hit the deck, beam, cold, beam, cold, drop to 1000 ft agl, beam, cold, hot. as you get within range. sometimes better to turn around and see if they follow. most of the time that i die im out of comfortable Datalink range. further range from the source, you will see what looks like 2 targets, but is actually one because of the lag. top of HAFU is 14 which is pretty accurate, but datalink will almost look like it has a wingman.
  19. same reason why they release the same model car 4 years in a row. maybe something is different. maybe with the newfound popularity marketing is seeing alot of interest in the 16. maybe different material? who knows. at least they have the molds, and i also suspect that dcs in the past few years has bumped up earnings at Thrustmaster. they got me good with the TPR pedals on top of the warthog hotas. ive heard from multiple people that the cougars they had all broke too. maybe the curvature was a hard mold to keep sturdy? not sure, never used one. seems most of the warthogs are still running pretty strong though, so maybe just there for the person looking to replace the old hog stick. could be multiple things. Ive been really happy with mine, and am going to be regreasing everything soon (1 1/2 year old now, pretty good use).
  20. gotcha. I think you hit it on the head, headphone/mic is a single cord, and hits a splitter for a mic input and speaker input on the soundcard. that makes sense. appreciate it! ill give it a shot when i get home too. i suspect that is the problem
  21. i dont use PTT in discord, but my headphones have a switch that can mute all mic audio. people cant hear me, but can still hear the audio being produced by PC. its been happening before the voice stuff was released from DCS. im thinking that it has something to do with my audio card, but im not sure. I usually keep the sample rate for audio at 24 bit, 44100, but also use the higher audio setting of 32 bit 192000. the sound card, headphones and mic are all fairly new, and nothing is really worn out. feel like there are alot of variables that contribute to this. Draconus, I do keep ICS in hot mic. i will drop it down to cold mic and see if that makes a difference. if discord is muted, and Using SRS, doesnt bleed over. but my buddies get the same jester audio, regardless of if my headphone microphone is muted or not, so its not bleeding from headphones. i will give the cold mic a shot though. thanks guys!
  22. Hey guys! I have been having an issue. not really a problem for me per se, but let me explain. I have noticed that for some reason i have audio bleeding issues when flying the f-14. Whenever Jester speaks, everybody else i am flying with in discord can hear him pretty clearly. I have a microphone (boom Mic Pro) on my headphones, and with the microphone muted, my friends still get a perfect audio feed of what audio is being processed my PC. mostly Jester audio. I suspect that it might be something with my Soundcard (EVGA Nu Audio), but has anybody else experienced this at all? I hate having to saturate my friends with audio that they really shouldnt be hearing. My headphones dont bleed audio in any other circumstances and they have the same audio feed, regardless if my audio is turned down, mic is muted, mic is hot, etc.
  23. IMO, the new hotas setup would get you direct pleasure. i have the monstertech mounts, but they are game changers. you can then dedicate savings towards parts that can be interchanged, or you could buy each Rig part seperatly until your ready to get it up and running. speaking from experience, i was glad that i didnt have to throw 1000 at my TPR's and warthog Once my second build was done. maybe could sell some of your older hotas stuff for money to offset costs? its up to you really.
  24. yeah. i try to put my nose down a bit when looking for a radar acquisition. Wait for the top part of the diamond ( your 14s radar) to show. it the top of the diamond is showing, means you have ability for lock. if its the bottom data link source only showing, your 14 isnt picking it up. thats where the nose down helps...slowly work it to -5 degree pitch and give it a sec. it should pick it up. in TWS, you want to follow the same radar steps to keep them TWS acquired. you want to keep that top indicator of the diamond showing, even after missle launch. if you can steer her to keep them Radar acquired, thats gonna give your phoenixes the best chance. if the top portion of the bogey symbol dissapears, the missles tracking dont know where to look and start to slow down slightly for an aqquire from the tomcat. if you can stt him, that still guides the semi active missle to target, or even the active missle to target. A human RIO has a easier time holding him when he starts dancing, but if you keep the TV on him, you can still get an exact idea where he is with the pipper, so you can manually steer your Locking radar to him. also your closure aspect helps. the small numbers on the bottom left for alt range, if it isnt too dangerous ill try to get 5000 feet below his altitude at 30-40 miles ( unless its below 15000). that way either TWS or STT has ability to 1)find him 2)hold the lock. if hes locked and your within 20 miles, the guy usually starts diving, so that altitude difference is enough to keep him hot and just mirror his descent using the TV. 1 target, stt at 40 miles, launch at 35, turn tv on, watch missle indicator on tid. if missle tracks and hits, win. missle tracks and goes pitbull(Pitbull is when the long line on the phoenix touches the target and i think it says ACT or something. RIO can also let you know that one too) hes defensive. hes either gonna get hit with the phoenix, or open himself up to you at 5-10 miles if you pursue him. sparrow range or phoenix with acm switch flipped up so she comes off the rails quick, straight to pitbull. if you drop lock within 20 miles, use your pilot radar modes to get him back. if you can keep him on the defensive within 15 miles, usually opens a large window to do your work safely. TV screen is great cause you can see his exact moves, and also spot missles coming off him to start defending. im tired
