  1. And another thing... lol I've watched a ton of Ka-50 videos on the web. And almost every one of them I think "damn that really looks like the territory covered in BS". So as far as their saying the landscape is bleak, etc.. I've never been there but the videos of Ka-50 demo's show tall skinny trees, flat lands, desolate/farm lands, rivers, mountains, hills, valleys, snow, rain, mist, roads, buildings, and lots of powerlines. I think ED got it right on the money. We're not at war in the French Riviera after all.
  2. I'm torn about their reviews of the landscaping. On the one hand, yes, the landclass and texture mapping is based on a 5+ year old graphics engine. And yes it doesn't have a whole lot of detail to it. BUT.. Agreed, obviously there are mountains, hills, trees, buildings for cover..so the author just did not explore enough. But the lack of quality of ground textures is, in my opinion, a good choice. It saves frame rate for important things. ED focused on performance, immersion, realism, and the "experience of being a combat helicopter pilot". I would NEVER fault a sim builder for making that decision over pretty ground textures. However I do see the author's point from the perspective that "in today's technology" I think the ground textures COULD be better, with newer and more efficient texture modeling, without taking a performance hit anywhere else. Regardless, when you get into a ground battle, and you can see intimate detail of the ground vehicles, weapon systems, and the ferocity of the battles, all while maintaining a solid FPS... you know ED made the right choices given the resources they had to choose from at the time. (We also have to remember that BS started development a LONG time ago...so decisions had to be made and coding committed without the luxury of experimenting with new graphics technologies that we now take for granted several years later).
  3. Of course not. The only way you would notice a difference is if you had a core that was overloaded and then offloaded it to another core, assuming the processes you offload don't mind their affinity being dictated to them. If you have a core running at 50%, then offloading 25% of those processes to another core will NOT yield a performance increase. The same amount of processing (buses, etc aside) is happening. If you have an old PC that is running at 50% load and upgrade to a whiz-bang multi-core cpu then it is NOT the multi-core nature of the CPU that makes a single app perform "better". It is the new technology; faster cpu, bigger data pipes, etc that make the performance. Adding more cores for standard non-multithreaded Windows applications only allows you to run more non-multithreaded Windows applications at one time without taking a performance hit to any one of those applications (aka processes). That is the benefit of multi-core. Restate: Multi-core alone is not a performance benefit. Spreading out the load across cores alone will not improve performance. When you use affinity tools like DCS max you *might* see *small* benefits (like 10fps here and there). Not because you are spreading the load, but more likely because you have moved processes to a less-burdened or "clogged up" core. Chances are that if you have a dual core, and an app runs better on two cores than one, but the first core was not running near 100% then there is prob a process running on that core that is mucking up the works. Optimizing your processes of the over-worked core can yield the same performance benefits of affinity tools. So, if you use an affinity tool like DCSMax and see little to no performance increase, chances are that means that your system is running pretty clean already. In that case let Windows do its thing until you start loading up a bunch of new processes. :joystick:
  4. Just curious.. why do you guys run in anything BUT full screen? Do a lot of you run BS and other games windowed? Why? Doesn't it distract from the immersion to have the Windows chroming surrounding your game?
  5. If I understand correctly that is the idea...these modules should be able to connect together in multiplayer. At least I hope so. That was Gilman Louie's vision when he started Spectrum Holobyte and produced the first Falcon, except he was far ahead of his time and neither pc resources nor bandwidth could support what he wanted, which was an ArmA-type environment with infantry, mechanized divisions, and air support, but using simulations with the depth of Falcon. If the DCS series can pull this off then as far as I'm concerned gaming will have reached it's pinnacle.
  6. He was being funny, but saying "go for it". I think if someone knew how, it would be posted. So be the dude that figures it out! Necessity breeds invention. Though I'll caution you that you won't find a lot of buy-in for mods that detract from realism or anything that would be considered a "hack" in multiplayer. Still, cool idea. A lock "tone" would be nice.
  7. Man, say it ain't so! I watch Airwolf AND old Knight Rider (new Knight Rider is garbage, of course) on Hulu all the time. I still love it. And I still find episodes I missed or forgot (exception of the Sin-jin seasons...those were crap). If someone made a quality sim of Airwolf I'd own it in a heartbeat. But I have to believe we just wouldn't be impressed today. But if someone made a hard-core Airwolf, 2-man required kind of thing...that would be pretty sweet. And PS I'm a hard core fan of the US military. Always have been since a child. But the KA-50 BLOWS MY MIND. I think I'm still a jet jockey at heart, but I've found a new home in this seat. Time will tell, and new graphics engines, etc may sway someone one way or the other, but even with all that is to come I could really, really see myself making the Shark cockpit a "permanent place of residence". Of course, I'll still own every DCS module. That are all too tastey to avoid it.
  8. Wow It's a CSV file. That's wicked. You're going to end up making me spend a lot of money man. lol I've already started preparing my wife for my purchase of a CNC mill later this year, so I can take my cockpit building to the next level. Great video. I love waching that mill do its thing. Next we need a timelapse video of you creating the file. :)
  9. Ah my bad. I wasn't searching for "directory". Thx!
  10. Sweeeet! :D :pilotfly:
  11. Gotcha. So if I save a flight plan in my ABRIS it becomes avail as a "Company Flight Plan" to other pilots on the server ?
  12. Quick question.. when flying in multiplayer for example, can I draw a box around a suspected target zone and then send that box to my wingmen? Or can one only share TPs and other Data-link related info? Thx
  13. Looking forward to checking out your script. I'd like to see what the scripting language is like before I dive in.
  14. The Director's Notes from Matt have been great, don't get me wrong. But, purposefully, they lack depth. And as a constructive criticism, they do spend a little too much time on advertising the game. Just a little. But they are overall excellent introductions to the basic systems. A second set of Advanced Notes would be great. Showing multiple systems working together in flow. Showing a mission beginning to end, etc. We also could use a Mission Editor Note, an LUA editor note (to walkthrough ALL the customizations possible, from graphics tweaks to radio settings...maybe we'll learn some things we didn't know where in those LUA files!)... I only wish I had the time to do one myself. Making the video would be educational in itself.
  15. Prob mentioned already, but my investment was way less than $50: 1. Couple packs of glossy paper: $20 2. 2 pairs of b&w/c print cartridges: $10 3. Binding materials (splitting the manual into several books): $5 4. Being able to print and bind the PDF yourself: PRICELESS!!! :D
  16. Hello everyone FWIW, I wanted to give a shout out to the DCS BS documentation and to the team who wrote it. Bravo! This is one of the best manuals I have read, especially to cover such a deep and complex mechanism as the Ka-50. The detail, coverage, and ease of learning provided by the manual is just top-notch. Again, best I've ever seen. And to my fellow pilots, RTFM! I am guilty myself of running to the forums for a quick answer. But even if you do you should STILL go back to the manual and find the answer yourself. Use the forum knowledge as a starting point. Bottom line: read the manual. Maybe once, twice if you have to.. it's a fun read, an entertaining read, and an easy read. But it is a lot so it's worth going over a couple times. It is well written enough to be approached as if you were handed the manual on your first day of flight school. But by the time you finish reading these docs you will know the Ka-50 better than you do your own wife (or g/f, goat, whatever...) And I contrast this to the old Falcon manuals, which I have read several times per each version since Falcon 3 way back when. Reading those felt like preparing for a PhD dissertation defense. It was thorough... but I bet when you ask me 10 years from now how to manage target points in the PVI vs how to manage the radar slewing in Falcon, the Ka-50 instructions will be ready to go, while I'll prob ask "What's a Falcon???"
  17. Off topic, but this would make for an INCREDIBLE mission. Searching for insurgent ground troops hiding in the mountains. That could be wound a long way, with a great story line, and maybe even a mini-campaign. Wish I knew how to make missions! :joystick:
  18. Ya sometimes my IR clip comes unplugged from the USB, and I don't notice it is broken. Also check to make sure that the TIR has the appropriate view assignments in the controls table. I've noticed that sometimes BS decides to change up or "fill in" some control assignments on its own, just once in a while. Eg a mouse assignment may conflict with the TIR assignment, and override it, causing it not to work. Everyone used to have this problem in FS9 and FSX all the time too. Make sure the TIR is loading the correct profile when multiplayer is launched. Also, it may be your usb hub, if the TIR is plugged into one. Mine give me troubles a lot, for many things including the TIR. Unplug the hub usb then power, then plug in power then usb. Let everything reload and try again. Hubs suck. I have yet to find a decent one, and I think I've tried all the mainstream hubs avail (Belkin, Dynex, etc.) Just keep peeling stuff back until you get to a point where it is BS and TIR running alone. If it doesn't work by that point then you have something more serious going on.
  19. Anyone using this successfully with a Core i7?
  20. I can confirm that the Matrox 3H2Go doesn't work with nvidia's 295 series boards. I've had nothing but trouble with my Matrox 3H2Go, even when running it on my 8800. It's never performed as advertised. Matrox support isn't much help either. So try to get feedback on how their gear will work with your video card and monitor setup before you buy!
  21. Ok, after some practice and after reading your suggestions I have my mind wrapped around this now. Use the collect uncage/cage button to enable side-scanning mode (uncaged, no target designated). When a target is found use the designator slew hat to place the tracking gate over the target. Moving the designator disables side scanning mode, but the Skvhal is not yet caged at this point. After adjusting the tracking gate, designate the target with the cyclic button, then cage the Shkval. If there is a good lock the tracking gate will flash when the cyclic button is pressed. Caging the Shkval to the designated (locked) target means that the Skvhal will stay locked onto the target as the heli moves. If the target is moving, then "Mov Tgt" tracking must be enabled so the Skvhal will follow the designated and caged target. Is there some variety to the order of operations? Is there an ideal order? Ie, when to cage, and when to designate? I've also been practicing using the cage button with the HMS and with auto-turn to tgt enabled. THAT changed my world. Getting and keeping targets lined up is a lot easier now.
  22. Sweet! It should be posted on lockonfiles.com so we can keep that library going with all this good DCS modding
  23. This is great GA! Is this the same mod as is posted on lockonfiles.com? Or is this a new one? Thx again!
  24. Thx everyone! That makes sense to think of it as a peer mode to the weapons systems. You're either killing, or cruising. Makes sense!
