  1. It really is amazing how [relatively] inexpensive these Seiki models are, especially compared to say, Dell monitors, as you mention. That factored into my decision to buy it -- I figured that by selling even just 3 of my 4 27" monitors, I'd likely just about recoup the entire cost of the Seiki.
  2. Sure, that could be done, but doesn't work in my case for at least two reasons: 1) The LCD mount extendable arms that I own don't stretch far enough to hold the 27" monitors out there, but more importantly, 2) Part of my wife's buy-in to the purchase of the 55" was a promise to sell the 27"s in order to offset the cost. :)
  3. UPDATE 7/20/14: I've now got a up that shows the 4K in action. UPDATE 7/16/15: Took down the old pics as they're way outdated. Should've noted this months ago, but I replaced the below Seiki model with the Panasonic TC-58AX800U 58" HDMI 2.0 4K/60Hz TV, as shown here. As some of you may know, I've been running a T-shaped, 4-screen setup in DCS for a few years now. Having the lower touchscreen made the setup incredibly fluid and intuitive, and I thought I had reached simpit perfection. But I had to admit that getting this setup working reliably was a real pain. It seemed that every Catalyst driver revision or DCS update would mess something up and it would require further fiddling with config files on my part to get it all working again. On top of that, there were a handful of annoying or remaining problems with the setup that continued to bug me and detract from the overall experience. As a result, for a long time now, I feel like I've spent more time tweaking and config'ing than actually flying. The idea of a simpler setup really appealed to me, but I could never identify a convincing alternative to what I'd already spent so many hours, days, weeks (not to mention money) getting working. But then a few weeks ago I started looking into the new 4K TVs. For those that have been following this, you already know that there are basically two kinds available: the Sonys and Samsungs that cost $3-4K and up, and the Seiki line that cost a quarter of that. The big tradeoff of the Seiki models is that they only support a 30 Hz refresh rate at 4K. This is actually an HDMI 1.4a bandwidth limitation that is solved by using either DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 (when it's finally available), and which some of the high-end 4K TVs have or plan to support. But the Seiki models only have HDMI 1.4a, so you're stuck with 30 Hz. For most people, on top of the obvious fact that there is little to no 4K cable or streaming content available yet anyway, this 30 Hz limit is a deal killer. Most say this makes it impractical for games, in particular, as 30 Hz is just not enough to get smooth motion. However, the more I thought about it, I realized that I fit into the presumably very, very small market segment for which these Seikis are perfect, because 1) I'm not using it for TV or streaming, and 2) I've spent years flying DCS at right around 30 FPS, so a 30 Hz limit really doesn't concern me. The idea of having a single huge monitor, on which I could comfortably fit the entire cockpit and actually be able to read all the instruments and displays (which at least in my experience, was simply not possible when zoomed out at 1080p on a 27" monitor), and not having to mess with multi-monitor configuration anymore, became really appealing. Long story short, I talked myself into buying the Seiki 55" model, with the caveat that I was going to be perfectly happy returning it if it didn't impress and also outweigh the loss of the touchscreen in my previous setup. It only took about 2 minutes after setting it up and first trying out DCS to realize that oh yes, this is incredibly awesome and I've now officially made the switch (hey, anybody wanna buy a 27" touchscreen?). I was actually already running 4K -- 6K, actually, given that my DCS resolution for those 4 screens was 5900x2300 -- so I didn't expect FPS to be much improved. In my standard tests, it increased from about 29 up to 36. But the added level of detail is something that just has to be seen to be believed. I'm loving not having to deal with monitor bezels anymore and scaling resolutions on my touchscreen to match the spacing on my upper 3 monitors (details about that in my 4-screen thread above). And yeah, I've tried other games too -- ARMA3, Dishonored, Deadly Premonition, Skyrim, etc. -- and they look, as expected, absolutely gorgeous. My Crossfired 7970's are just a bit underpowered to push 4K in those games at 30+ FPS, so the motion is admittedly less than optimal, but since DCS is my main concern, and I plan to upgrade to dual R290s at some point next year, I'm OK with it.
  4. I bought this T272HL back in April but no longer have any need for it. It's in perfect condition with no problems. It has native support in Windows 7/8 so no drivers are needed. Amazon's product listing page about it is here. It has DVI, VGA, and HDMI inputs, and handles the touchscreen functions via a USB cable. I paid $650 for it back in April, and the cheapest new ones online are $570 at Amazon, so I think asking $375 plus shipping, within the US only, is reasonable.
  5. Maybe I don't need to be concerned about windowed mode; I'd been avoiding it up to this point for two reasons, which may not even be true anymore: 1) windowed mode causes driver-forced anti-aliasing to get deactivated 2) windowed mode disables SLI/Crossfire Neither actually apply in DCS right now -- I use in-game AA and DCS doesn't make use of SLI/CF -- but when the new DCS engine comes out, SLI/CF will again be an option, and I don't want to rule out making use of it just because I've made the switch to Nvidia. What kind of FPS do you guys get on your Nvidia cards?
  6. Hey Cowboy10uk and leoakirakblo, Can you guys confirm exactly how you're running that 4-screens setup with your Nvidia cards, i.e. did it require running DCS in windowed mode, or can you do fullscreen? I'm thinking about making the switch to Nvidia but don't want to be forced to run in windowed mode.
  7. leoakirakblo, glad to hear my setup instructions helped you out. Can you post some pictures or video of your setup? I'd like to see how it turned out. But you're right, that unfortunately I think using Nvidia cards with 4 screens like this requires running in windowed mode -- which for other games usually means that CF/SLI is not taken advantage of, although obviously in DCS that's not an issue since CF/SLI is never used.
  8. I've had this happen if the TrackIR can see anything bright or reflective behind you -- check out what it might be seeing.
  9. Awesome little video, AlphaOneSix. Guys, how cool is it that we have a fellow DCS fan who can quickly whip up little clarifications like that by just walking outside and making a 10-second video?!?!
  10. Mapping button presses to axes can be done with utilities like Joy2Key, which is what I'm using to put the wheelbrakes onto my pedals, and it works perfectly.
  11. This is a demonstration video, with annotations for each of the steps, of the startup procedure for the Mi-8MTV2 in DCS World 1.2.6. The demo is meant more to show the functionality of my T-shaped, 4-monitor display setup with a touchscreen rather than be an authoritative explanation of the startup procedure. As such, it is based on the startup sequence used in the Mi-8MTV2 QuickStart manual but is not as comprehensive as ED's , nor does it show any weapons arming or selection procedures. It does, however, incorporate a test routine for the Doppler Navigation System, as described in the document "BASICS OF THE DOPPLER SYSTEM IN DCS Mi-8.docx" (link available here). NOTE: The video is available in full 1080p, so I'd recommend watching it on YouTube fullscreen, but not on a mobile device, as it appears the annotations do not work on mobiles. uMbiSVJzMSU
  12. This one? Says it's for LOFC2, though.
  13. Yes, that looks incredible! Can't wait to try it out.
  14. Last night I again tried varying the small springs I use and I was able to find a combination that I'm happy with for the time being. If the main spring shortening method doesn't work for people, I'd recommend buying a box of various small springs and just trying them out one by one to see what works best for you.
  15. I would definitely be interested in some kind of spring mod, as I've gone through the exact same steps you have in order to lessen the stock spring force. I bought a box of springs of different strengths a few months ago and have been periodically trying them out in my Warthog. It seems that with simple springs alone, perhaps it's impossible to simultaneously have tolerable forces while retaining a solid centering capability. The springs I'm using right now are great in terms of strength, but not so great on centering. As such I've got much more 'center slop' than I would like to have, but I just don't know what else to do. I wish somebody like IJ would come up with an NXT Warthog kit or something similar ... I spent several hundred in mods on my Cougar years ago and it was worth every penny.
  16. Yes, incredible work PeterP, this was pretty much exactly what I needed for this mod to be absolutely perfect. Thanks for putting the time into answering our requests!
  17. Agreed that this would be the easiest method, but as I and seikdel discovered, for whatever reason, the new files refused to copy over the old files inside the zip. I tried many different methods to do that, and it just never worked. So, as a backup method, unzipping the files into a folder works too.
  18. I had the same problem and solved it this way: instead of trying to put the new textures files into the default zip file, instead unzip the default zip to a folder in the \Textures\ folder and then paste the new files into it. DCS will see the unzipped folder and use those files rather than the zipped files.
  19. Devrim, outstanding work! Just beautiful. Since buying Mi-8 on Friday, I'd gotten used to the Russian text and had been learning it 'native', and was OK with that ... but having just tried your English cockpit, wow, I'm definitely sticking with this version. Really nice job, thank you so much! I am 100% happy with the cockpit as it is right now ... but if you're looking for any suggestions, the ONLY thing I'd like to see different is the small number of switches that are for specific named systems: for example, instead of 'Audio Warn' have VK-53 -- might feel just a bit more authentic that way. But it's a very minor issue.
  20. A simply yet elegant solution -- that sounds perfect. Thanks!
  21. Exactly correct. But Peter, it sounds like a lot of effort will be required to make the code accessible to me such that I could modify as needed, so please, don't worry about it. I'm perfectly fine using the F-keys for radio comms (I have them programmed into my X-Keys) so I don't really have a serious need to get a clickable radio working.
  22. Since the addition of the WW2 Europe 1944 icon at the top of the forum home screen, there's an extra white space on the right when viewing the site on mobile devices and laptops with lower resolutions (see attached pic). Can this be fixed? Makes navigating on these devices frustrating because you constantly have to zoom back in.
  23. Don't think so, but you can generate one in the controls GUI by clicking Make HTML.
  24. I picked up Mi-8 yesterday but haven't seen that bug. Looks to me like you've got some other controller affecting cyclic pitch and roll. Did you 'clear category' on every controller when you first set things up? Always a good idea.
