Razorback Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 I have edited a very simple mission : my A-10C and one KC-135 in order to practice my air refuelling. I am flying at 6.000ft, the boomer at +/- 20 miles of my plane level 150 When I take contact with the boomer (Texaco) here is his answer : proceed to precontat at 7000. ??????? what that's mean ???? How is it possible to rejoin the KC-135 ? With instruments ? TACAN ??? Thx a lot for your help ! Chris

sobek Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Proceed to pre contact means you are clear to close in on the tanker. IIRC, pre contact is 1000 feet below the tanker and a little behind it. When you are at pre-contact, you radio again and the tanker then clears you for contact. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
Razorback Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 My question is in fact how is it possible to rejoin the tanker when you have no visual with him ?
MTFDarkEagle Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 TACAN. Set the channel in the ME, and use A A REC on the TACAN panel, and set TCN on the MNCP (the panel behind the stick) Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
SY_KO Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 with the exception of MP where unless u are the host TACAN doesnt work. Have to use AWACs and bullseye directions. ~~~ Win7 64bit // i5 2500K @4.2Ghz // ASUS P8P67 Pro ~~~ ~~~ H50 Cooler // 12GB 1600 DDR3 // EVGA GTX580 SC ~~~ ~~~ TMW // Combat Pedals // TrackIR 4 ~~~
Razorback Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 TACAN. MTFDarkEagle Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 ME=Mission Editor. At the starting point of the tanker: select "advanced waypoint options", or something of that nature, and there is a pop-left. Search around somewhere in that menu, you should find SET TACAN, and set it to your desirement. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread

doright Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 (edited) with the exception of MP where unless u are the host TACAN doesnt work. Have to use AWACs and bullseye directions. What I learned today! 1. Push OSET on CDU (or Function, OSET on UFC) for the waypoint offset function 2. Push "-" rocker as required until waypoint BULLSEYE comes up 3. Call AWACS and get vector to tanker 4. Input heading and direction into scratchpad in format hhhddd then push R5 by the text "MH/DIS:[]". (Might need a decimal hhhdd.d if less then 100NM) 5. Push R7 to make new waypoint 6. CDU will calculate the magnetic heading and distance from you to the tanker and display it on line R6 7. Switch STEER PT rotatry to MISSION (or UFC) and select the new waypoint. The tanker's position, as of when you got vectors, will show up on your TAD. Head towards it. You might need to repeat process if tanker is really far off and moving at a angle but it will get you close fast and it's not really difficult. I'm betting this has already been elaborated to death elsewhere but, you know, I'm happy to have learned it. Edited April 3, 2011 by doright
MTFDarkEagle Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 That's a way to do it now, but once ED will get A A tacan working, that's a pretty elaborate solution :P Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
doright Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 True, but the same process might come in handy for other Bullseye calls.
andysim Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 should the tanker show up on the TAD anyway? i mean most other aircraft have a symbol as part of the friends or foe system dont they? PS if the awacs gives you a bearing from the bullseye you can work out where he is, if Awacs says Bullseye 180 at 20, hes 20 miles south of the bullseye =)
-Pv- Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 I tried creating a simple refuel mission so I can get the hang of it. It's certainly harder than Falcon4 and I thought that was hard. Start out in the air with CK-135 with tanking task. I have the tanker radio set to 110. I start out about a mile behind it and chase it around. I cannot get any response when contacting the tanker. I have the radios tuned. When I press \ and F6 the tanker shows as black. When I select to request refuel, the voice message is something like "request rejoin." -Pv-

The normal response to that is for the tanker to clear you to the pre-contact position. By "radio set to 110" do you mean the TACAN beacon? If you mean the frequency for radio comms, that's outside of the frequency range of any of your radios, so might explain why you don't get a response. AM radio is 116 to <152 MHz.
Aylward Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 here's a simple refueling mission i whipped up a while back for practice... (it's linked in the missions and campaigns forum). radio freqs and such are detailed in the briefing. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=68563 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] please... please... please... let the next DCS module be an F-18 fighter aircraft :worthy:
Ptroinks Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 I'm still wondering about that cryptic message from the tanker saying "proceed to pre-contact at xxx". The manual doesn't say anything about it. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

There's nothing cryptic about it, it just means you should move into position under and behind the tanker and then request clearance to contact. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. GGTharos Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 P489, actually. Although the description is wrong I think - 1nm is the tanker trail, pre-contact is 50' below and 50' behind more or less. -Pv- Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 OK. Radio range makes sense. I built the mission based on a posting here somewhere saying to use that frequency in the tanker. Must have been wrong. Thanks. -Pv-
