Operation Talon's Reach (MP, Co-Op 4, A-10C)

Recommended Posts

Started this one about 8 months ago and have been working on it on and off. It morphed from one concept to another over time and we've flown several versions of it at the 476th. It's a bit of a beast (long/busy) and requires good ordinance management, lead/wing coordination, and inter-flight coordination.

A few features:

- 4 A-10C co-op slots

- 170 custom voiceovers

- over 20 randomized taskings

- expect 3-4 hours flight time, much more if additional are set to trigger (see bottom note)

- bit of CAS, BAI, ECAS and MEDEVAC support (depending on how things turn out)

- Check-in/Check-out with JTAC via new ( DCS 1.2.4) MP F-10 radio menu functionality

==============================

SITUATION:

Abkhazian forces pushed south of the Inguri River and are now occupying Senaki, Poti, Zugdidi and surrounding areas.

Three platoons of US special forces, under the callsign TALON, are moving in "light and fast" just north of Senaki, taking advantage of a weak point in enemy lines. The goal: to capture a regional high-point on Eki Mountain. From this vantage point, TALON will have a commanding view of the enemy positions to the north, west and south.

Boar 21/22 and Boar 27/28 will be providing support for TALON as they gain a foothold on Eki Mountain. Once in position, TALON will be calling in air and artillery strikes on enemy positions across the valley.

A CIA unit, callsign "PROPHET", will be providing real-time intel to TALON based on enemy radio chatter intercepts and drone recon.

VAPOR 51 & 61 (2xF-117A) will be tasked with taking out the bridges along the Inguri River, taking away the Abkhazians ability to reinforce from the north.

BONE 71 (B1-B) will be tasked with pummeling the Eki Mountain summit defenses and communications towers just prior to TALON's arrival.

UZI 41 & 42 (2xAH-64D) out of Kutaisi AB, will work on the armored units along the Forward Edge of Battle Area (FEBA) near Senaki.

---------------------------------------------------------------

TASKS:

---------------------------------------------------------------

1 - T/O Vaziani AB 0545 hours

2 - Top off fuel at ARCO

3 - CHECK IN w/ TALON at CP for tasking (use F10/Other/ radio commands)

4 – Rearm/repair at Batumi as needed (Check Out/Check In as leaving and returning to AO)

5 - RTB Vaziani when mission complete

Batumi is available for emergency divert, repairs and limited rearm.

---------------------------------------------------------------

ROE:

---------------------------------------------------------------

Priority targets are armor, artillery, C2, and other assets identified by TALON. Air defenses are secondary and should be pursued only as needed to complete tasking. TALON will be vectoring in airstrikes and artillery within your area of operations, so maintain contact to ensure you are clear of these vectors when called.

---------------------------------------------------------------

WEATHER:

Mostly Clear, Calm Winds, -1C

---------------------------------------------------------------

*** Use F10/Other/ radio commands for check in, tasking updates, and check out with TALON. You will be notified by MAGIC when CHECK IN option is available, near waypoint “CP” (Contact Point). ***

Mission inspired by (and very loosely based on) the book “Lions of Kandahar” by Maj. Rusty Bradley, depicting Talon groups’ role in the Battle of Sperwan Ghar.

====================

Mission/Server Host Note: to lengthen this mission, simply set the first trigger flag #99 value anywhere from 2 to up to 16. These are the "main taskings", mostly BAI tasks, and would allow for flights to come in/out over a long period of time using the Check-In, Check-Out functionality which would simply start/stop takings from occurring. May be desirable for some server hosts.

This mission was originally designed to use slmod. There is some functionality added if slmod is used (ground forces calling when they fire 50cal and/or TOWs), but slmod is not required to fly it.

Many thanks to these wonderful folks for voiceover help...

Croalex- the download link saves the following file "Operation Talons Reach_CO-OP 4_EN_v1.0.miz", but it may be whatever compression/archiving software you have on your computer is recognizing it as a .zip.

Simply rename the .zip file as .miz and you should be good to go.

Joyride, thanks for the mission bud. Played it yesterday for an hour or so before we got the old CTD treatment for DCS. Nicely done. We only got the first 3-4 taskings done I think and we were wondering if they become more difficult as the mission plays out? I have not cracked the .miz file open yet in the mission editor as it would be a spoiler but how many taskings in total have you included and are they randomized so each time you fire up the mission you don't know what will be coming at you?

Cheers

IADC - it's definitely more of an endurance mission than any singular tasking being of great difficultly. The scenario is closer to COIN ops. That being said, as the sun starts coming up the MANPADS and AAA threat increasing with visibility. The initial tasks gettng Talon set up at bullseye do have some randomization but that part would play out similarly. After that, the main tasks come from 16 other possibilities, so is more randomized.

I'll add that loadout chosen affects difficultly. This mission is much more intimate with a couple mavs, rocket pods, and Mk-82 airs vs. taking PGMs and/or lots of mavs. Way back I had originally put in foul dynamic weather with a low, overcast cloud deck to force the action down low, but alas the performance hit is just too high with that weather on may PCs.

Flew this beauty last night with two squadmates... :pilotfly:

I must say, that was an impressive show you "directed and produced" down there...

And it all worked out like a Swiss watch...

...one little thing... on first post, shouldn't Apaches be "AH" instead of "UH" in the friendly packages list?

Great work!!!

  • 3 weeks later...

I agree that this mission like all of joyrides missions is a cut above anything else out there. The attention to detail is second to none, the playability suits all skill levels and mission fun factor is spot on. Our group has played it twice now and had a blast.

Thank you
