OT: F-14 losses list.

Recommended Posts

Just found a list of all F-14s lost up to 1994. Check the fifth entry, it's a real doosey :D

Lol, "Shot itself" :p :p :p

I know this was due to a malfunctioning aim-7 launch rack, but still, it's funny that it shot itself down. Guess the crew got a kill on their record for that one.

I was just recording a track against a pair of F-14s BVR - finished earlier than that fight usually did, and I couldn't work out where one of the F-14s had gone.

Went back and watched the replay . . . . Tomcat #2's Phoenix came off the rail . . . . directly into the back of his leader :D

Anyone else think the AI's got dumber regarding keeping formation and not crashing into you with v1.12?

This happens way too often for me when I send out AI to do ground attacks, they go for similar targets and the leader gets a rocket in the rear, and to be honest, it's not an effective clusterbomb. The efficiency/price is too high for it to be usefull in any way.

Two F14A with BuNo 158620 ???

Was there a second Tomcat with the serial number 158620 (the one that shot itself) ? According to this source, the 158620 flew at least until 1996, serving several units till then:

No. 158620 is right on the top of this list.

kind regards,

heh, I've heard of friendly fire, but that fifth entry is just silly. That's taking it to the next level!

It's not the only one... that I know, there was also an F-16 which was shot down by the iron bomb which bounced back soon after release and exploded under the wing. I think it was from 614th TFS Lucky Devils during Desert Storm, 1991.

Its the one that states "Cat accident" that made me blink and re-read it. Only then did I realise what it really meant....

You really mean a cat (animal) ? I was thinking about Clear Air Turbulence, which is also refrred to as CAT.

Those winds can rip the wings off an aircraft....

I guess "cat" as in "catapult" is more probable with carrier planes ;)

Quite a long list after all, goes to show it's still a risky business in the end. I doubt many of them can be used as funny anecdotes like the "shot itself" incident... :icon_neut

A Tornado in GW1 was destroyed after a bomb fused early and detonated on the bomb beneath it. Think one crewmember survived.

There's a story somewhere about a Hornet that inhaled the catapult guard strips . . . . great big rubber things. If I remember the story correctly, it flew a circuit and landed with thirty feet of rubber sticking out of the intake . . . . .
