ratkandy Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Hi, I'm new to the shark, but I've spent some time flying the Su-25T,and I love the way TrackIR works there. In BS2 I'm frustrated that I can't zoom view with my head a little more. I can't even get close enough to read the labels on the cockpit switches. I've seen Youtube videos where people had a much better view of the cockpit than I have. I don't see any settings about this in the options either. Am I missing something?
Wichid Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I prefer the way Black Shark works over the Su-25t. On the number pad hit '/' and '*' for zoom. Or under the Axis assignment you can set a spare axis if you're lucky enough to have one. I imagine that if you assign the trackIR z axis to zoom in the axis part of the keybinding controls then you'll have it set the same as how the Su-25t works. I hope that helps. Check in the TrackIR software, you can increase the curve for the axis to increase the sensitivity of your zoom (i.e. if you move your head in towards the monitor an inch, you can increase the visual zoom you get). I believe that is the Z-axis, so select Z-axis in the dropdown. From there, increase the curve to the left of the Y-axis to increase what happens when you move your head in (to the right of the Y-axis controls what happens when you move your head back). ratkandy Posted May 12, 2014 Author Posted May 12, 2014 Yes, assigning the TrackIR Z axis to zoom instead of longitudinal camera view in the DCS controls under "Axis Assign" was what I needed. Thanks!
Boris Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I too once preferred the "Su-25t" style trackIR zoom in, that all non-6dof cockpits used to have. With the introduction of the 6dof cockpit for the Su-25t, this should be gone now though. While it's convenient to zoom in with the forward motion of the head, it's not at all realistic. In real aircraft, the HUD is focussed to infinity, and won't appear bigger, no matter how closely you look at it. Technically, you're also robbing yourself of one degree of freedom in the cockpit. I have set all my cockpit views up with quite a narrow field of view to allow an easily legible HUD. I've mapped zoom to my Hotas for when I need it. jib Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 , you're also robbing yourself of one degree of freedom in the cockpit. . Apart from the Su25T seem to have zero freedom in the Z axis , I cant move my head forward at all, it is like I have no neck! I can't even see my wings. I to have zoom axis mapped to my hotas which I use all the time. Mods I use: KA-50 JTAC - Better Fire and Smoke - Unchain Rudder from trim KA50 - Sim FFB for G940 - Beczl Rocket Pods Updated! I to have zoom axis mapped to my hotas which I use all the time. It seems the Su-25t still has the old axis commands for the old style cockpit. That means zoom was assigned to the TrackIR z-axis, which you reassigned to your hotas. Make sure the trackIR z-axis is now assigned to camera forward/back. Pikey Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Agree mostly, but have to say that especially for air to ground, not having an instinctive zoom mapped to the Trackir Z axis is robbing you of the ability to see faraway objects. I also find zoom works "snappier" than pure Z for looking at instrumentation - ie you can fill a screen with an MFD with z for zoom, you can't if it's just normal head forward. This might be unrealistic, but i'd rather have it that way and make up for loss of "eye definition" so the alternate method shoudl be more widely known about for that choice. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
ratkandy Posted May 12, 2014 Author Posted May 12, 2014 Some of the controls are never legible in the default setup, for instance around the HMS switch on the lower left, and the controls under the Shkval screen. The z-axis head movement doesn't help because I can't get my head low enough. It feels like I have a giraffe neck. Binding a key or button to zoom seems like a clunky solution to me, but I may try it.

Zakatak Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 It feels like I have a giraffe neck. Binding a key or button to zoom seems like a clunky solution to me, but I may try it. I'm not sure what joystick you're using, but if it's the X52/X52 Pro, try binding the X axis on the ministick for Zoom In/Out Slow with the small button beside it as Zoom Normal, and have the Y axis as unprogrammed. It feels really natural to use and it's always at my thumb. Much better than using any button or the slider to zoom. You still have 3 other hat switches which is plenty for the Ka-50 as far as I'm concerned. That's for the X52 Pro but I imagine other throttles have something comparable on them.
