Rapier-VCG- Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Curious if Ed intends to update the models and load outs for a2a. Currently, am aware that the apache D is able to carry 4 stingers or 2 sidewinders on wingtip pylons And the mil 24/28 can carry Iggy's in place of the standard anti tank missiles. Really does kill the immersion factor when you get popped by a hellfire, when realistically its manuvering capacity wouldn't allow it to track and engage fast movers.
26-J39 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I believe ED only implement weapons that have been used in operational duty. For example there is no A2A missile for the Ka-50 even tho there appears to be function for it on the collective. This was an "upgrade" if you will that could be fitted but never actually ordered or implemented. I agree with your point about the hellfires, had a few of those pop me in the shark but never in a fast mover.
Zakatak Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I was wondering why the Ka-50 never came with R-73's. I guess they can't accurately model a system that has never been tested before?

Something like that, or they don't deem it fit to spend the resources on it? Anyway an F-15C slingin some Mk-82's would be nice tho. :D
Sceptre Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 The Vikhrs are decent against choppers from longer ranges than the enemy helis can reach, they just don't do much damage. It normally takes about 3 hits but a good cannon burst will take down anything. Since not everything is 100% true to real life in DCS... why not mount 2 Iglas or R-73s on the wingtips of the Ka-50 similar to how the AH-1Z Viper has it? I guess it probably wasn't worth the time since you don't normally go A2A in choppers anyway. Bushmanni Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Hellfires can be used against choppers in real life. Israelis shot down a Cessna with one and at least Brits train to engage helicopters with them. While US Apache can't carry Stingers OH-58D should be able to carry them and AH-1W should be able to carry Sidewinders. I think it's not possible in DCS though. Longbow's can mount 2 Stinger tubes on their wing tips actually.

Invader ZIM Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Sales are booming for foreign Apache's to have their stinger's though. http://www.dodbuzz.com/2013/10/23/raytheon-sells-stingers-for-apaches-abroad/ Raytheon Co., the world’s largest missile maker, is boosting sales of its popular Stinger missile for AH-64 Apache attack helicopters around the world, company officials said. The Waltham, Mass.-based company has already sold the helicopter-launched Stingers to Japan and Taiwan, recently inked a similar deal with South Korea and expects to finalize agreements in coming months with India and Qatar, according to Mark Nicol, director of Raytheon’s Stinger missile program The lightweight, short-range weapon has already been adapted to launch from American-made helicopters such as the AH-64 Apache, UH-60 Black Hawk and OH-54 Kiowa, according to Gordon Bourgeois, manager of international business development for Raytheon’s Missile Systems unit. But because the U.S. military relies on other aircraft to control the skies, it generally arms rotorcraft with heavier missiles designed to take out ground targets, such as the BGM-71 Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided, or TOW, anti-tank missile, Hellfire missile or Talon laser-guided rocket, Bourgeois said. Foreign militaries don’t usually operate with such a level of air superiority and thus have a greater interest in integrating Stingers on Apaches, Bourgeois said. Each Apache can be outfitted with one or two pair of Stingers with missile packs on either wingtip, he said. Option seems to be there though for U.S. Apache's if the need should arise. Would be fun because of the what if scenarios and heavily contested airspace we can create with this sim.

From what I've read, U.S. Army AH64D's have always been capable of carrying stingers but this has never proven necessary as American gunships haven't operated in contested airspace for a long time.
