Joni Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Is AWACS jammed by ECM or does it burn through because of stronger signal? I wonder this because I see that AWACS has no trouble at knowing the exact position of aircrafts no matter that there are dozens of planes with ECM activated. GGTharos Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 AWACS is immune to SPJs in game, and you probably wouldn't be able to jam it with these aircraft anyway: The radar operates on a different band than those SPJs are usually meant to counter, and they will typically only fire up against a threat signal, ie. a radar in STT mode. So yes, it isn't modeled quite right :) Is AWACS jammed by ECM or does it burn through because of stronger signal? I wonder this because I see that AWACS has no trouble at knowing the exact position of aircrafts no matter that there are dozens of planes with ECM activated. GGTharos Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Probably. Also, it depends. Those who know the real answers don't talk about this, but you can basically expect to need stand-off-jamming assets in real life to mess up an AWACS. A fighter's SPJ is called a self-protect jammer for a reason ... it's not meant to blind search radars etc, it's meant to disrupt weapon employment against you. It has limited power and limited computing resources, as well as cooling issues so ... like I said, the game doesn't represent this too well (no game does). Same in real life? VTJS17_Fire Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Same in real life? Yes. I talked with an AWACS operator at ILA 2012 in Berlin ans asked him, if a F/A-18G Growler could bug an AWACS. He said: No. To jam an AWACS, you need a broadband jammer, like the russian have. You place this (truck/ vehicle) anywhere in the landscape and turn it on. The signal is so strong, imagne a very, very large microwave, that bugs all electronic emitters. But as the other said, the AWACS can read the whole IFF (Mode 1,2,3,4,s) and has other passive sensors. regards, Fire Hardware: Intel i5 4670K | Zalman NPS9900MAX | GeIL 16GB @1333MHz | Asrock Z97 Pro4 | Sapphire Radeon R9 380X Nitro | Samsung SSDs 840 series 120GB & 250 GB | Samsung HD204UI 2TB | be quiet!
