Emu Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 If an enemy is targeted with an AIM-9 cued by radar in dogfight mode, will they get a radar-lock warning, or just a radar warning?
MacEwan Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 Im pretty sure in dogfight mode your lock is an STT lock which makes the other pilots RWR go crazy letting them know they're being locked up.
Emu Posted August 10, 2014 Author Posted August 10, 2014 So in theory, any missile then fired could be IR, SARH or ARH and they have no way of knowing?
Bimbac Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 If AIM-9 seeker is cued by radar, all it does is just following the angular coordinates of the target. You still have to wait for the "tone" to be sure the seeker really acquired correct target. Technically, IR or SARH missile gives no warning of being launched, only ARH, because it has its own radar, which would go active immediately after leaving the launcher at close range.

Your radar would, in this instance, probably be in STT (at least in the game). So yes, there will be lots of noises and blinkenlights going on in the opposing cabin. However, of course, note that it's not the AIM-9 "targeting" that sets it off. It's the fact that your radar just STT'd the guy. Same as if STT'ing someone prior to a "normal" launch. SARH missile launch does trigger RWR. But I think Aim-9 can also be launch by just point thing the nose of the A/C towards target so that seeker itself locks on and in this way there is no RADAR lock warning. GGTharos Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Technically, all three would either give you a missile launch warning or NOT, as a minimum. In the absence of other cues, the RWR can be programmed to issue a launch warning based on radar tracking mode and emitter strength (ie. in lethal zone) - and that's a philosophical choice made by the pilots of that air force. The RWR could also potentially detect the M-Link being generated and use that to issue a SARH/ARH launch warning. So, technically, anything could happen. IN THE GAME - An STT will give you a lock warning - An ARH/SARH launch will give you missile launch warning - An IRH launch will not give you a missile launch warning Technically, IR or SARH missile gives no warning of being launched, only ARH, because it has its own radar, which would go active immediately after leaving the launcher at close range. Some aircraft with no radar can use AIM-9, e.g. A-10, AH-1.
