Ian Boys Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 I made a simple mission 4 hours ago to practice IL-78 refuelling and that has been 4 hours of tough work! Needs even more concentration than a dogfight. At least in a dogfight you know that you win some, you lose some. If I mess up refuelling it's all down to me. Well, 4 hours in and a couple of (minor!!) collisions with the tanker and I've basically got the hang of it. It's hard though. I bet there's some automated way I'm missing.
JulienBlanc Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Indeed nice screenshot! There's no real automated way to do it ^^ if not the only tips I can give you is adjust curves to have smoother input, which won't send you off completely as soon as you touch the joystick, instead make small adjustments thus more precision... And never chase the boom, fly in formation with the tanker; eyes on tanker, glance at boom. Last thing is to put altitude hold when matching tanker speed & height for a brief second to achieve perfect trim ( not easy to do manually as it's not very precise.) You can always try to put in an autopilot but it won't change anything to the concentration needed as drifting off happens really quickly! Good job :) Good luck and enjoy that ol'33 ! SkateZilla Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 After Pre-Contact, it's all small adjustments. TBH, Last time I refueled in the A-10C I was being funny and decided to use only the trim hat and small throttle inputs to see if I could do it, and it worked fine, Dunno if SFM Trimming in FC3 would be the same, (never felt the same to me). Mobius_cz Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 In Su-33 after you extend the refueling probe there is noticeable change in control sensitivity so refueling SU-33 with SFM is not that hard. Also higher speed of the tanker helps you a lot, basic 500 km/h is not that ideal for this fighter imho. Still good job :-) not everyone is capable to refuel a plane in DCS  [sIGPIC]http://dcs-uvp.cz/images/userbars/uvp_bars_mic.gif[/sIGPIC]
Serp Supreme Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 I personally find the Su-33's drogue and probe style of airborne refueling to be muuuuch easier than the boom, like for the F-15 or the A-10. Just the amount of play you have with the cord thingy there that feeds the fuel, there's much more room for error than with the KC-135.
