Just curious as both aircraft are operational with this missile and have been so for a long time.

Neither aircraft is operational with it.

The su-27SM upgrade is capable of using them, and MAYBE the su-33 upgrade is too (the real one, not the Wikipedia upgrade), but Russia does not field the R-77 anyway. Consider is availability on the Mig-29C as a little bonus.

Neither aircraft upgrade is modeled in-game, and the conversion to upgrade aircraft in the real world is quite show anyway.

Ah I see, so it is only the indian Sukhoi's which are fielded with this weapon?

Odd that the Russians aren't fielding it for their Su-27SM, at least officially.

Thank you for this information :)

I believe the Chinese prefer their own pl-12 :-) I don't know if they are fielding them on their flanker though.

As for the Russians, there are theories as to why they aren't fielding them, from using non-Russian components in them to skipping paying huge money for its production on favor of RVV-MD. I recall hearing that the Russian AF was not terribly fond of this missile for a number of reasons, one of them being range and the other electronic. Western pilots tend to say that whole they respect the 77, it isn't exactly competitive vs an AMRAAM platform. Of course platform is the key word here.

.....in favor of RVV-MD......

You mean the RVV-SD :)

MD is the R-73 'upgrade'

When I look at it, most nations that field R-77, has some other MRM to back it up, India is also about to field new ASTRA missile in their major fighters. Only fighter not mentioned to carry it is MiG-21Bison, which is slated to be retired as more Tejas enter service anyway. I do think R-77 might have been a bit of a flop.

Anyway, while we can theorize and discuss for eternity to no avail about it's real life potential, one thing we know is that in DCS, R-77 is so bad, I prefer R-27ET or ER instead :)

Also, as mentioned above, version of Su-27 modeled in sim (Su-27S) indeed doesn't have ability to use R-77.

I would love, if in future we could get more advanced Flanker variants, it's one of my favorite aircraft, but wouldn't count on that too much. I'm not sure if there are enough unclassified information around on them to make potential DCS modules.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V
