Sirkam Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Hi. BS2 is on sale on Steam right now, and i'm thinking to purchase it. But dont like DCS World so much, so my question is... Could i use the steam key of DCS BS2 on the non Steam "previous version"? Regards.
Sirkam Posted October 30, 2014 Author Posted October 30, 2014 Thanks for reply. Although I bought DCS-A10C long time ago (as a DCS World DLC), my Steam key worked for the previous version.
Yurgon Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Hi. BS2 is on sale on Steam right now, and i'm thinking to purchase it. But dont like DCS World so much, so my question is... Could i use the steam key of DCS BS2 on the non Steam "previous version"? You mean the old standalone version of Black Shark 2 that can still be downloaded under Previous Versions from the DCS site? I guess it should work, but I'm not sure. It's possible to activate DCS World modules with a key from Steam (the other way around definitely doesn't work any longer). In that post, Wags said: Please note though that keys purchased on the Steam store will work on DCS World downloaded from the DCS Store. So he specifically refers to DCS World. I think the older standalone versions of A-10C and BS2 share the same activation mechanism and you might be able to activate them with a key from Steam, but as I said before I don't know for sure. With the current 70% reduction you may just have to take a chance. On the other hand, I can recommend DCS World and I'm certain that activating the BS2 module for DCS World with a key from Steam will work. Edit: [...] and the site specifically says you can't. Where does it say that? I looked over the DCS site briefly and didn't find such a notice, but it's very well possible I just missed it.
QuiGon Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I would just recommend to install DCS World and activate BS2 in that. Why should you not want to use DCS World? Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
Sirkam Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 Thanks for reply both. Im well aware that keys purchased from web keys or DCS Store are no longer valid on Steam DCW, but buying them from Steam can be activated on non Steam DCSW, and "previous versions" modules was my question. So i think im gonna buy BS2. I would just recommend to install DCS World and activate BS2 in that. Why should you not want to use DCS World? I don't know why, but Steam DCSW runs in my machine poorly (i have a Quad Core 3'0Ghz, 4Gb RAM, AMD R9 270x 2Gb, SSD intel 530 series and W7 x64), but the stand-alone modules runs like charm, that's why im using the previous versions of DCS A-10C and soon the BS2.

Every single key for any DCS modules (at the moment) comes from ED's system. The ones sold via Steam however are pre-generated, hence both systems knowing about them. Essentially, Valve get a list of xxx unused keys to sell from ED, and Valve just tell ED when they've sold a key and to who. Fancy trying Star Citizen? Click here!

Is it possible to use the same key, for example, in Steam DCSW and the stand alone module at the same time or i need to deactivate the Steam DCSW BS2 key to use it in the stand alone module?
KesMonkey Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 I don't know why, but Steam DCSW runs in my machine poorly (i have a Quad Core 3'0Ghz, 4Gb RAM, AMD R9 270x 2Gb, SSD intel 530 series and W7 x64), but the stand-alone modules runs like charm, that's why im using the previous versions of DCS A-10C and soon the BS2. The stated minimum requirement for DCSW is 6Gb RAM, so that's probably the reason.
Yurgon Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 So i think im gonna buy BS2. Sounds like it should work the way you want it; I'll keep my fingers crossed. With the transition from BS2 standalone to DCS World I had to get a new PC. The standalone ran fine on my old rig but World was a slideshow, so I know exactly what you mean. OTOH, your current setup doesn't sound too terrible. If you haven't tried already, maybe you should get DCS World directly from the DCS site. You could use the Su-25T or the TF-51D for a direct comparison to check out if there are conceivable differences in FPS so that you don't lose an activation if it turns out there's no difference. Is it possible to use the same key, for example, in Steam DCSW and the stand alone module at the same time or i need to deactivate the Steam DCSW BS2 key to use it in the stand alone module? If you mean playing online with both installations at the same time, nope, I don't think that's going to work. But I'm pretty sure you can have both activated at the same time, no problem, as long as you don't run them at the same time.
Sirkam Posted November 1, 2014 Author Posted November 1, 2014 (edited) Yeah, i was referring to keep the key activated on both modules (Steam DCSW and the stand-alone) at the same time. I was thinking that maybe activating the same key on both installations will lead to activations problems. Of course, its impossible to use both at the same time though xD Thanks a lot for the info. EDIT: I already bought Steam DCSW BS2 and yes, the key works on the previous version and doesn't need to be deactivated on Steam DCSW to make it work. Edited November 1, 2014 by Sirkam
