BitMaster Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) thanks for the responses, i dont have amd catalyst, theres nothing going on in the background, but now that i think about it, my pcs fans used to spool up to really high revs when i was playing a demanding game, and now they remain quiet, do you know if theres any way to test my power suppply? i went and downloaded a bunch of bench mark software and temp monitors, and neither my cpu or gpu are overheating, the cpu doesnt go above 20c even with graphics settings on ultra, when i first got this pc a year ago, i thought i remembered playing dcs on highest settings getting about 20 fps. yes my gpu has 2 gigs of memory. Sounds like you should inspect your PC visually and check for dust blocking proper cooling and if you suspect that your PSU is bad you may check your caps if they still all look proper or if some seem to have formed a dome, which would be the death of your mainboard. Also check in Bios that your settings have not changed to some fallback safe mode settings that make it slower but more failsafe. Some boards do this when a power outage happens, bad resets etc. many things can cause your bios to change either back to default or failsafe. Check and see. IF your hardware has any flaw, it will have it with any demanding software ( game in our case here ). Play any other hardcore hardware scrubbing game and check if your card and CPU can perform. To test anything but graphics with very high load, also on PSU, use Prime95 and change it's settings for TESTING ONLY so that it makes use of 80-90% of your total RAM and ALL cores with a BLEND of everything and let it run for several hours, a true test is at least 24h non-stop cooking. If it fails within this time it's not considered stable, even if it fails within 48 or 72h as computing tasks in RL can very well take a week or month to finish at full bore. Check your Volts in Bios, any variation greater 5-7% is a failure. 12 Volt can be 11.9 or better 12.2, but 11.7 is a problem. 3.3Volt goes really bad with any less than 3.1 usually, if your caps are going bad slowly. This is all very time consuming and will only lead to a conclusion and hopefully a fix if you know your way around in Bios and are generally not afraid of tuning your PC. The 20°C you mentioned for your AMD CPU under full load are a typo ? I can hardly believe that value, though I haven't seen any recent AMD running in years, we all run Intels across the board but a few servers run AMD chips. Don't throw too many reasons into the pot, you seem to take many different things in consideration. The first step is a division from HW to SW, which is easily done with testing with other games and 3dfx test programs and prime95 for the rest of the system. If that is all OK, then most likely it is not your hardware but your software composition on the given hardware, which is a lot harder to fix :( A very good way to test your hardware is Steam and Linux with games that run on both OS, like WARGAME or many others. Install a fresh Ubuntu, install Steam, add your game and go playing. If your Linux shuts down like your Windows does your hardware has very likely a problem as 2 different OS show the same symptom. Try to exclude always into a 50/50 to narrow down and get a clue what you are tracking. I do troubleshooting for PC's and Servers for a living and you can go badly wrong for a long time if you follow the wrong trail. Booting a Live Ubuntu CD/USB and testing general stabilty is never a bad idea in such a situation. Sardu is a very good tool to make a multi boot stick. http://www.sarducd.it It also allows WinInstallation, Win-PE and as many Linux's and Gpartd and Clonezilla and Virusscanners and and and as your Stick can hold. It also holds memtest which is the very best tool to check RAM for integrity. timone1002 Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 thanks, yeah i checked my task manager, and while there are alot of things running in the background, most of which idk what is critical processes or backround programs its only using 10- 20% cpu power and 2gb of ram.
Rise Tragedy Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I have an AMD FX 1400 at 3.6 GHz, GTX 650 Ti BOOST, and I have close to no problems. In the next couple years, I'm hoping to invest in a better PC, or just upgrade my current one with an Intel i5, better gpu, and more RAM. I've heard that an i5 is better than an i7 in terms of gaming, but I could be wrong. I run mostly high settings, with the exception of water on low and a couple other things turned down or off. Get about 20 FPS most of the time. With the release of EDGE, the game should run somewhat better because it utilizes 4 cores instead of 2. We'll have to see. Ramsay Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) Hello, im currently playing steam version of dcs world with f 15c, and a10c warthog, and the frame rate is pretty slow even on low graphics settings (about 10 fps) I have an AMD FX 4130 quad core 3.8 ghz CPU, 8 gb of ram, and a gtx 670 gpu, i havent tested it out on other games recently but before i could run modern games at full graphics settings at high fps, including an extremely modded skyrim with 100+ mods, and high res texture packs... etc. So im thinking i probobly have a virus, but i wanted to be sure 10 fps is *really* low but is also quite easy to achieve with a few poorly chosen settings. DCS is still DX9 based until EDGE /2.0 arrives and I find it hard to get good fps on anything above medium. I'll share my own settings to give you something to work from (i7@2.8GHz, GTX670, 12GB RAM). With the above I have 30-45 fps on the ground in most modules (19 fps MiG-21Bis) and 50-70 fps above 20,000 ft (30 fps MiG-21Bis). For fast movers that fly high I like longer view distances and less detail, while for helicopters (low and slow) I adjust for shorter view distances/greater detail/FX. YMMV but I would have expected your system to run training missions @ 25+ fps easily. NOTE: fps also depends on the mission weather and the number of scripted AI units - in my case, more than about 45 AI air units give <10 fps no matter what the GFX settings are. timone1002 Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 also its stays at around 19c to 22 c but not at full load the cpu wont go to ful load even when running dcs, and neither will the ram.
timone1002 Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 Now I'm having big problems. My screen shut off saying autodetect entering power savings mode, the PC still runs but I can't see anything. I think something might be wrong with my GPU. I cracked open the case and there's a tonne of dust on the GPU and mother board.
cichlidfan Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I cracked open the case and there's a tonne of dust on the GPU and mother board. Don't panic. Just get the PC cleaned out and then test. I hope every things ok once you have the dust cleaned out. Here's my DCS load when running the MiG-21Bis Radar Training mission (35-45 fps), ignore the high 103 C motherboard temperature (due either to a poorly designed Dell Vostro M/B and case or a Dell BIOS patch to fix a < 0 C fan cooling bug). Dalminar Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 In the future, always get a case with dust filters on the case fan intake vents and build for positive air pressure in the case. As a system builder, seller and maintainer, I won't even sell systems without dust filters on the case fan intake vents, esp since I live in the desert where summer can reach over 110F. 1
cichlidfan Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) For the dust, I use this, it's a lot better than air cans: http://www.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW/ Unless you do an excellent job with airflow and dust management, the machine will still need cleaning from time to time. When that time comes, then the item mentioned by LockOn is the best investment you could ever make. My dog, however, hates it! :D Edited October 31, 2014 by cichlidfan ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! timone1002 Posted November 1, 2014 Author Posted November 1, 2014 Yeah I already changed it to high performance mode but it only increased fps by 2. I've got a bigger problem though now, I went through and cleaned my whole PC of dust, after I got the black power savings screen, and bought a new power supply just in case. But after cleaning the whole thing out with air cans and it still has the black screen saying autidetect power saving mode... So that do if my GPU has now gone bad or my motherboard or CPU, I'm going to try my roommates GPU now
timone1002 Posted November 1, 2014 Author Posted November 1, 2014 So I checked myngpu with my roommates computer and it works fine so I think the problem is with the motherboard/CPU, weird that it crapped out while I was checking for frame rate problems. I'm probably just going to go and upgrade my PC with a new mother board/CPU, any suggestions? I have a 500$ budget, I prefer to buy things in eBay cuz I can get it cheaper so my budget if I were to buy the same things new would probably be around 7-800
timone1002 Posted November 7, 2014 Author Posted November 7, 2014 So I got my new PC put it all together and I'm having the exact same problem as my last PC... Fans turn on but front LEDs only flicker when turned on or off for a split second and no signal to monitor, I have literally replaced every single component on the PC, new mobo, CPU,ram,GPU,PSU. The only thing I haven't replaced are the fans and the case with the front power buttons and USB/haudio jacks... Could it really be my case/power button that's causing the problems?
timone1002 Posted November 26, 2014 Author Posted November 26, 2014 forgot to finish this, the new motherboard i got bios wasnt updated to run with my cpu, so it wouldnt pass POST either, got another new motherboard and everything works fine, pretty sure the mobo, or cpu fried on my last pc.
