Hello! I have an Ati 6990 which is a decent card, but only when crossfire works. As for now DCS is pretty much unplayable for me. But since EDGE feels like it will be released within next 1~2 months? I don't know if I should wait for Edge and possibly Crossfire support, or buy a GTX 780 now. (That's the card I'm thinking about)

I would be glad to hear some advice. As I would rather avoid buying a Graphics Card and maybe invest in Trackir instead. (Money is short).

Cheers Pilots!

My opinion is go with the GTX 970 or 980 now. No idea how DCS World 2 and EDGE is going to perform but you can be certain that a GTX 970/980 will work well and you don't need to mess with the SLI hassles..

(And find a way to save up for the TIR as it is INDESPENSABLE!)

Still I would go in that order..

GTX970 or 980 and then TIR...

EDIT: After reading Cichlidfan's response I am editing this one to reflect checking out the GTX 970 and 980 prices..

At this point in time, it probably makes sense to wait (depending on your patience level). However, if you were to go the new card route, I would look at GTX 970 prices.

EDIT: Note that I just bought a GTX 980 so my advice might be suspect. ;)

The ASUS Strix GTX970 4GB was my choice....backordered though.

Also I would buy now rather then later....its better to have a good card when edge comes out, just incase EDGE is buggy at first.

More horsepower.

Could you elaborate?

The last time I noticed the prices, a 970 was cheaper than a 780 and it outperforms it.

Agreed. Gtx 980 is a great, if you're ready for it, just order one http://pcgamerhome.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980m-vs-880m-comparison-whats-the-difference/

You do realize that the article is about the mobile versions, which are a completely different animal.

I would suggest wait and check how is performing your current card. If It is not performing well then you can easily switch to the newer card and by the way may be you save some bucks due to Christmas.

Just wait, seriously. When EDGE gets released, play it smart and start up a benchmark thread. Gather info and then make an informed decision, not a fanboy-sold impulse you'll actually regret

lol, fanboy.... I have a GTX 970 now, had an ATI HD5870 before. Not a fanboy at all. Just look at all the benchmarks and make a conclusion.

Also, i expect that most people will be using it for other games aswell.

As a computer tech for the last 25 years, Nvidia cards work better with Intel processors and Radeaon cards work better with AMD processors. So if you need a new card, go with the one that matches you CPU.

Motherboard ASUSTek TUF Z390-PLUS GAMING (WI-FI)

Processor Intel i5 9400

Memory VENGENCE PRO RGB 32GB

Video Card # 1 GIGABYTE NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX1660 6GB GDDR6

Power Supply Thermaltake GOLD 850 RGB

Sound Card NVIDIA HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO

The info provided by the folks in this thread is GOOD INFO..

You making the "Fanboy" statement rather than reading good informed information shows YOU as spreading Fan-Boy-ISMs...

hush.

It is a valid point, in keeping with the fact that AMD is dropping prices aggressively in competition.

Secondly, it is NOT good info. It is opinion - call it fanboyism if you like, you seem to want to be offended here.

Your lashing out in response is the height of rudeness, not to mention impulsive.

The point I'm making is; Once you have the information from the benchmark thread, then you can make an informed decision in regards to:

$/FPS above target FPS

$/db above target db

$/°C above target temp

$/Watt @ peak:current PSU capability

Don't be sold to subjective information. It's a market, not a baseball team.

Currently there is no benchmark for DCS, so it's high time it were done.

I'm running a GTX780 right now and its a dam good card. Here's my thoughts, I'm not buying a 980. I'm going to buy another 780 when the price comes down even further (they've already dropped 50 bucks), then I'll SLI those bad boys and have 6GB on Nvidia goodness.

Oh, and I'm running the Poseidon on water cooling so it keeps things around that 40-50C. Higher temps but a real dent in the longevity of the hardware.

You will still only have 3GB of goodness since the memory is mirrored in SLI.

Yes, but what I will have is much higher frame rates.

I would imagine so. I gained about 10%, in DCS, going from a 780 to a 980. Significantly more with other games.
