Hey guys,

I haven't had a desktop in almost 10y. I have been exclusively using laptops...but now, I am finally making a desktop knowing that laptops will never reach the performance of a true desktop at any given generation of hardware. I already just bought the CPU. I am planning on buying everything else this week one at a time. The main reason for this is DCS. I have never been able to run LO:MAC, DCS with everything maxed out at a smooth frame rate. Once DCS A10 came out, early on, my current rig (laptop in sig) could run it decently, but with everything enabled...shadows, tree shadows, v-sync, it could never run it well. I think finally this can crack it. ;)

CPU: Intel i7 5930K

Updates to come as I get other stuff. ;)

cheers

Nice! I just recently completed my gaming rig (see my signature for details), also coming from gaming laptops before.

Since now we can upgrade on a parts-by-parts basis, I am already planning on getting a second GPU for SLI, and another 16GB of RAM for the heck of it.

I just upgraded from my air-cooled Cooler Master Evo 212 fan to a Corsair H100i water cooler, which dropped the base temperature of the CPU down by 10 degrees centigrade.

What case are you getting? I am really happy with my Corsair Carbide Air 540 -- would highly recommend it. http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2013/06/corsair-carbide-air-540-review/carbide-air-540-1-1280x1024.jpg

Nice case and amazing rig. Ya man... excited to try out my first actual decked out gaming desktop.

I am planning on this case. I really like the look of apple stuff and really like minimalism. lol :music_whistling: .. so I really don't care for the outlandish loud looking artistic cases. I know others may like them, but my taste is for something that almost looks like furniture...blends in without a hitch. :) . My buddy has the fractal design R4...the one I am considering is this fractal design R5 which has the nice updates we wanted for cable management etc.

Current plans for specs:

- Fractal Design R5 case

- ASUS X99-A motherboard

- Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 970

- G-SKILL 4 x 4GB DDR4

- Corsair H60 CPU cooler

- Seasonic 850W gold KM3 power supply

Waiting for a few things to be delivered in store at ncix and will be picking it up this week. :)

I'd be pretty pissed if DCS 2.0 doesn't run on this thing like butter. :p

real nice.... will be interesting to see how far the CPU can go with WC.

I am planning and ordering my rig right now, OMG, wife must not see the list or she kills me !!!!!!

I am all for a new monitor but Asus ROG Swift PG278Q is still too expensive though I pay net w/o tax wholesale price. I may get the Rudders and TrackIR for that money and stick with the 27" LED I just got for free ( can't beat that price ! ).

I am looking for a Watercooler System that allows me to run the CPU + GPU-Poseidon off of one circuit with one radiator 2 or 3 x 140mm, external or internal, I don't care, just LOW NOISE !!

Gonna hit that order button pretty soon......OMG she'll kill me !!!

Just completed a new build myself (see my sig). Went from AMD to Intel, Nvidia. Only upgraded the CPU, GPU, mobo, memory and PSU. Everything else is from my previous build. Waiting on the 2nd GTX970. Initially ordered 2, 1 was DOA and had to be RMA'd.

I guess the one thing us recent PC-buildes may agree upon is the notion that we should go SLI for EDGE, right? :) From what I read, a lot will be offloaded from the CPU to the GPU with EDGE running DX11.

From the DCS world 2 discussion

Some features we plan to include in DCS World 2 include:

  • Direct X 11 support
  • Improved performance
  • Dynamic shadowing of the terrain and mountains
  • Improved weather
  • Improved lighting
  • Clipmap support for new maps
  • Higher object counts
  • Higher resolution ground terrain mesh and textures for new maps (between 1 and 64 meters per pixel depending on area of map and clipmap level)
  • More detailed tree models with collision for new maps
  • Better graphical effects
  • High resolution road textures for new maps
  • Ability for road signs and light signals for new maps
  • Additional ground clutter (rocks, cactuses, etc.) for new maps
  • Skeleton animation for infantry
  • Better use of multiple GPUs (CPU multi-threading is not being pursued as it will provide little if any gain)
  • Ability to create dedicated servers in the future
  • Unified front end and simulation .exe
  • Improved API sound support
  • Improved Oculus Rift support

DCS World 2 will make better use of multiple GPU's. We can only assume it would help EDGE also.

Agreed. Since EDGE is the underlying 3D-engine for everything DCS 2.0, SLI is the way to go. I just hate to spend another $600 on a twin of my GPU...argh. :)

A lot better coming from my gaming laptop. Like many others with high-end builds, I still encounter quite a bit of micro-stutter from time to time, though.

You know how you have those ..post purchase regrets... I am starting to feel I shouldn't have been hasty with the 980 and instead should have gotten a 970 and perhaps went SLI for another 970 in the future. Unfortunately the restocking fee of opened video cards on ncix is 15% which almost makes me loose another $75 which means it is the same price as a 970. lol. So I guess I am stuck with the 980. But well.. I got the 980 because I have always heard of microstutter issues with SLI setups and considering how DCS is notorious for microstutter, I figured its best to stick to one most powerful GPU

That sucks. Lets hope EDGE deals with all those issues and gets it sorted out. I hope our gfx cards can run 2.0 at 60fps or so..lol...or else I will be a bit frustrated. :p

haha! All our addictions eh? We need our new toys. I personally use a 46" sony 3d tv as my monitor. DCS looks amazing at that scale.

A buddy of mine was warning me about the 980...I should have done that with the 970. Forgot about SLI support for DCS. I spent $580 CDN on the 980. The 970 would have been $450 for a decent one that can be overclocked. So...a $130 difference. Although....not that much of a performance difference. Pretty much a max of 20% performance increase on the 980 from what I have seen. But well...its done.. I can't return it..makes no sense..so I am going to be sticking with a single 980 for a while. :p

yeah! I have seen the memory issue which is one of the reasons that swayed me away..But enough benchs show that there isn't much of a price to performance benefit going to the 980. But well... :smartass:

I guess 1080 at that screen-size ain't that bad. :) For me, though, I was really amazed with the extra vertical gain in pixels after I stepped up to 2560x1440. Makes a huge difference inside the cockpit, imho.

Damn! yea..that would be pretty nice. That's 16:10 aspect right? I don't think I'll be getting a new TV anytime soon unless the old one craps out...so I am a bit content that this GFX card should be able to push pixels at sufficient FPS for a HD resolution. It also helps that none of my buddies have made the move to 1440p or 4k either. Its peer pressure (just what prompted this PC now :P ) that generally escalates these purchases. lol

With my new build I felt I owed it to myself to get a new monitor with a few more pixels; would have loved to go the G-Sync route, but that's at least twice as expensive as my current 27" screen.

As for peer pressure - for me it's really about EDGE. Oh, and Prepar3D. :)

2560x1440 is the same 16:9 aspect ratio as a standard 1920x1080 display. The extra detail, is nice though.
