hannibal Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 everyone is excited about about DCS world 2.0 as much as i want to buy a new computer specifically for playing DCS, i rather wait to upgrade in 2016 and give my money to a Intel Skylake-S or Skylake-HEDT along with what ever nvidia 3D stacked vid card technology is released... But i do have descent hardware at the moment.. i have a i7-2600K (quad @ 3.4Ghz) and a i7 980x (hex @3.3Ghz) being that we know that DCS engine likes clock speed more than cores, I ask you guys if i should overclock the 2600K or the 980x, and if anyone has their experiences overclocking and if it is worth doing? Thank you!!! find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
BitMaster Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 YES Overclock it !!!!!!!!!! My i7-2600k goes 4.43GHz stable in DCS with stock cooler, it even does 4.63 but I wait for my watercooler to arrive. most 2600k do well above 4 ghz. hannibal Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 (edited) awesome. i read some guides for both 2600K and 980x.. seems like i can go higher with the 2600K. i would like to shoot for 4.4 also i have the arctic freezer on the 2600K. BitMaster, do you have any comments on this guide? thanks for the advice! http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/675134-HOWTO-overclock-your-i7-2600k-on-a-P8P67-%28w-pictures%29e Edited January 30, 2015 by hannibal find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
hannibal Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 btw, should i stick to windows 7, or go to Windows 10 preview for DCS performance? find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
KLR Rico Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I didn't notice any performance difference between the two. i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS
msalama Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 My i7-2600k goes 4.43GHz stable Mine runs at 4.6GHz without problems, although with a HUMONGOUS passive cooler. That hedgehog really is big! But no overtemps or anything, runs stable as a rock... The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.
BitMaster Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 I have only played DCS at 4.63 GHz once for like 15min with the stock Intel cooler/fan and that made me believe that with a top notch water cooling system I can reach at least a stable 4.63 GHz if not more. I just ordered the Radiator and CPU + Mobo cooler tonight at watercool.de ( english site too ) after reading reviews over reviews and this seems to be THE hardcore cooler around. Sure, don't ask if a 2nd GPU would benefit more, sure it would, would even be CHEAPER than that WC setup in total, but I wouldn't wanna play while 2 GTX's squeak like hell and the CPU is like a glowing AMRAAM. If money is not the #1 limiter, go WC with a BIG radiator and look from there. SLI watercooled is less trouble than SLI in a Midi Tower along with OC'ed CPU and all air cooled based, that's gonna kill you, loudness wise. You can, if you don't intend to cool more than the CPU, go with a closed loop setup for around 60-130 bucks. Corsair has some nice setups ( Asetek based most times ). The single fan setups for sure will allow more OC'ing than any air driven solution, for a fair price and done in 15 minutes. PureEvil Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I hope that with this new WC setup I can go beyond 4.63 GHz that Asus TurboV adjusted for me. 4.8x...we wil see.... Bit 5GHz is easily done with 2600k. temps should not be a problem with w/c, keeping it under 1,5v (rumors say beyond that cpu starts degrading) is the tricky part sometimes. hannibal Posted February 2, 2015 Author Posted February 2, 2015 alright. i will look into water cooler accessories. i now have a reason to purchase something for black friday 2015. btw i took the dive and started to download windows 10 preview. find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
hannibal Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 hey btw, is DCS world better with or without hyper threading on? thanks in advance.. :) find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
Demon_ Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I think DCS don't use the hyper-threading technology. Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Inrideo Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I have an AMD FX-8350 4.0 running at 4.3. I let the Asus auto-tuner take a run at it to see if it would push it up to 4.6, but it fell back to 4.3 again. Not sure if it will go beyond that yet or if it just kicked back as a default safety precaution. I'm using the Corsair H75 water cooler. PS. When I'm not using all the fans, the water cooler itself is pretty darn quiet. BitMaster Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 It barely raises the Voltage to 1.39 for 4.63GHz so I will make sure I don't get above 1.49 V. The good thing is, this CPU has been running for 3 years in a air-conditioned rack as a Win2008R2 DC and thus is well broken in. You should not OC any CPU when it is new, give it some month so the resistance decreases and the CPU runs cooler, THEN go for overclocking. You won't achieve the same results with a new CPU compared to one being fully broken in. The electrons flow with less resistance after the brake in time, causing less heat. Think of it like a pipe that when broken in opens a fast highway in the middle of the pipe where electrons can flow without bouncing back and forth from the walls, which they do when it is new. GregP Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I've been running my 2500k at 4.8GHz for over four years now, and the improvement in DCS is absolutely worth it. Check out my post here for details.
BitMaster Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 ^ Seriously? :suspect: Do you have any references for this theory? I don't, but it's a well known electro-chemical process and it has been referred to in countless articles regarding chips and heat dissipation in general, audio clarity and other stuff. Check google to find the actual hard data on this. KLR Rico Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 If anything, I'd suppose electromigration, the primary cause of "wear" on a CPU would cause increased heating die to current leakage. Break in is a real thing in audio due to the mechanical components involved. I've taken your suggestion to Google this phenomenon and haven't found anything. I'm also surprised that it has never been mentioned in any of my electrical engineering studies. i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS
